Open comment: It is once again Hoosier Hysteria time. Indiana high school basketball is huge statewide(recall "Hoosiers" film), and this is the LAST year for single-class b-ball. No longer will a 1-A school be allowed to play against a 4/5-A school in the tourney. A very heated, spitting debate continues on the state legislature floor. The principals will win. Multi-class is coming. :-(

Hey there, fellow Dan Fans...

I recently bought a (bootleg?)copy of "Live in '94" Has anyone else heard it? i wasnt surprised "Fall of '92" didnt make it onto 11TOW after I'd heard it, but "Hey 19" sounds really good live , especially with DF's little vocal additions with the girls doing the "...Cuervo Gold..the fine Columbian.." thing at the coda. The little 'Royal Scam/Bad Sneakers/Aja' opening instrumental isnt bad, wodner why they boys didnt put something like that on AIA.. Overall, it isnt bad, but it isnt anything I havent heard before. Methinks I'll sell it. Any takers?

I have finally been released from the clinic, so before I read any of the nonsense bullshit that has been written the last couple of weeks, I just want to say that I love Steely Dan so much that if I had a chance to fuck Tyra Banks, Donald Fagen or Walter Becker, I would kill myself because I wouldn't be able to decide between Walter Becker or Donald Fagen.

By the way if anyone was wondering, I was in the clinic for hitting my girlfriend. Can you believe that bullshit?

RUBYBABY; And then I think "The Goodbye Look" has great lyrics. Listen to the line... "I know a fellow with a motorlaunch for hire, a skinny man with two-tone shoes". We all know what kind of guy that is. And Fagen just describes the man as a skinny man with two-tone shoes. And the line when the soldier is knocking on the door... "his stupid face, the glasses and the gun". We also know that kind of fellow, donīt we? I love the Becker/Fagen lyrics, I get pictures in my mind. And for the parts I donīt understand, I just put in my own fantasy there... I guess itīs why I love their music/lyrics so much.

ALL: Springtime... Yesterday twilight, I had to pull off the road, stop the vehicle, and gaze skyward as thousands, if not tens of 1000s of migrating birds danced and sang from leafless tree to phoneline to leafless tree. The sunset was that eery pink/peach hue. Birds lined up on the wire in 1/4 mile stretches. Then, all at once, they'd take to the sky in a swarming, circling array. In the end, wave after wave descended upon a very tall double-sided billboard, congregating amidst the gridwork between the sides. I wondered how it would feel to fly in weaving formations without a mishap -- you know, there wasn't one mid-air collision. I suspect it's due to good communication.

Good to see that I am not alone in the Mike McDonald appreciation stakes.

I must confess that I am not particularly aware of the DMB. Are they any good?

Clas: if nose candy has you bemused, try 'upward bogey snow' or the distinctly British 'Charlie'...

Joni Mitchell, she's okay. I like Court 'n Spark very much, but some other albums are a bit too mellow for me.

We used to have a show over here called 'The Old Grey whistle Test'. they had Steely Dan footage, Reelin' in the Years as it happens. The only footage I have seen ever.

Someone noted earlie, the union of jazz and good ole' rock 'n roll in the Dan's repertoire. Funny that, 'cos the absolute best songs they did at Wembley, last September, were Black Cow and My Old School. The former was the thumping bass and punch, you know the daahh duh duh; the latter was the scorching brass and bomb dropping snare.

CLAS: Hey, strapping Nordic bear - let's frolic in the springtime! I know what you mean about The Goodbye Look. It reminds me of CasaBlanca. Did you ever see that one? I gotta let my imagination soar, too. WB&DF's lyrics are the best for that!! I've been thinking that while the lyrics are great, the way Donald Fagen sings it makes the words even better. He transcends any language.

About the cheering up Maxine thing: I think no one could describe what happened to you & Pompe as well as you can! But I know what wrestling a big dog who wants to lick a tiny dog to death is like; but not in the mud while I'm trying to keep my glasses on and gazed @ by a group of onlookers and horrified tiny-dog owners. I'll bet Pompe just thought you were playing...

PPpaulCC: Thank you for your thoughts - I hate to wink on line. I see your point about SD not being the counter-culture pop icon that is Bowie. Re DMB

So what's not to like?

Dave's vocal phrasings are interesting and different. He utilizes lots of fairly intricate chord progressions and includes some intriguing twists and turns in his compositions with regard to melody. The lyrics are quirky and arcane, yet intelligent (sound familiar?). Dave's percussive style of guitar playing is quite appealing. the musicianship is sharp and exacting (how about Boyd Tinsley's electric violin driven nod to Hendrix on "Jimi Thing"), and Carter Beauford's jazz influenced drumming is quite outstanding... These guys bring a little something extra to the pop music table IMHO.

Favorite DMB track: "You Pay For What You Get"... nicely done indeed.

Me thinks if you're one of them there Dead/Dan fans (I include myself in this category)), then DMB can be quite an appealing combination of these two disperate yet similarly influenced musical agenda's.

Clas: I have to echo you impressions on the imagery in The Nightfly. In the title track while the imagery is crystal clear and stirs the imagination, it's interesting how the radio host drifts off into his own thoughts in this smoky late-night world of jazz, cigarettes, alcohol, insomniacs, incoherent callers, and loneliness. We're unsure whether his inner-most thoughts are included in the on-air dialogue for example as the "little blue jar" of "Patton's kiss and tell" stirs rememberances of a lost love... at that late hour radio hosts generally have more freedom to do that, and the listeners probably expected it.

Do Donald & Walter Still Work For These Guys? Thu Mar 6 12:24:25 PST 1997

Thursday March 6 8:20 AM EST

Warner Bros. Records Lays Off 65 Staffers

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Warner Bros. Records, which boasts the top-selling album in the country this week, has laid off about 65 employees in a long-awaited cost-cutting move.

Nearly 50 of the affected employees worked at the venerable label's Burbank headquarters where the head count was about 300. About 100 employees are scattered across the country. Sources said staffers in marketing, publicity and promotion were the hardest hit.

The cuts were announced at a staff meeting late Tuesday and will take effect Thursday. On Wednesday, latest SoundScan data revealed that the label's soundtrack to the upcoming Howard Stern movie "Private Parts" debuted at the top of the album charts. However the label has had a relatively low profile on the pop charts for much of the past year.

"Our industry is in the midst of a difficult and challenging period of adjustment," Warner Bros. label chairman Russ Thyret said in a memo circulated Wednesday to the remaining employees.

"Over the course of our history, Warner Bros. Records has been a successful, artist-oriented and competitive organization. I have concluded that we must streamline our operations including the very difficult decision to downsize our work force."

I have often entertained the thought of designing and printing a t-shirt something along the order of 'Property of Barrytown High' to give as a gift to my Dan literate friends. But I always thought I should include a mascot name that would be appropriate to the imagery of the song. My first thought was 'Cutters' like the locals in that movie about bike racing at the University of Indiana. But now that I have discovered all of you out there I was hoping to get some other ideas. I remember the first time I knew Michael McDonald was in Steely Dan was at the June of '74 concert at the Paramount in Seattle. I think Kiki Dee opened for them that night. Pretty weird, huh? Anyway...Michael sang a couple songs, I think Dirty Work was one, and I remember being disappointed that some second string nobody was ruining my songs. Ignorance can be pretty embarrassing. After I heard Michael on subsequent albums I realized I had been pretty lucky to have heard Mr. Mac 'live' with our guys. I also came to like almost anything Michael ever did.

I enjoyed the story of Steely Dan living on through the daughter. I know that if I had kids they would have also succumbed to the power of the Dan even if I had to throw them kicking and screaming into the light.

When we are talking Parents-Childs I must tell you about my son. Heīs 21 now, and he has listened to Steely all his life. Or letīs say he HAD to listen to them. Because daddy did. But he never liked to pick up the guitar or playing piano. Maybe because daddy did and he thought my playing sucked? Well, at the time he became 16 - 17 he suddenly bought an electric guitar. And one night I stood outside his closed door to his room and heard him play along with "Kid Charlemange", and he played Carltons stuff note by note and bend by bend. And I was proud and very impressed. And confused, when the hell did he learn to play?

The wider image will take up more space, but if you convert it to a .GIF file, you'll probably end up using less.

Thanks for all the input about the kids & the Dan (BabylonSister, Beautiful Survivor, CLAS, & Steve) Exposing the kids to SteelyDan has been fun! Even when they said they hated it, I knew otherwise. Even today I caught my oldest son laying on the sofa, listening to the Nightfly - all of it. I think he's getting tired of the angry/depressing crap he hears with his friends. BTW Beautiful Survivor, my daughter is 14! We still need mom/daughter fun times, probably more than ever - except that SHE does most of the talking now, I'm here to listen.

Amanda THROUGHWITHBUZZ Fri Mar 7 16:24:43 PST 1997

AMANDA: If you want another opinion about DMB(which you probably don't...certainly not one from lil ole me) I have a great many friends that worship the quicksand they walk on. (I'm 22 and from a town in east texas called Tyler that you've probably never heard of, and if you have I'm sure you wish you had'nt.) I don't really think I have much of an opinion about them one way or another. But most of the people I know that have sung their praises and forced me to listen to them over and over are people whose tastes in music I don't respect too much. I'm probably about to be on thin ice with some out there who will read this, but most of these people are TOTAL deadheads(not that there's anything wrong with that, so don't anybody yell at me for that comment. I just personally can't stand the Greatful Dead.) I do think that there are some very...touching(for lack of a better word, maybe) musical phrases in their songs. The kind of sounds that make you stop in the middle of a crowded room and just feel your heartbeat. And maybe I just don't want to like them because I don't want to have anything in common with some of the hick wannabe hippies I share a community with. And I must agree with YGK...they're just not Steely Dan, now are they? For those of you that have retold stories about Steely Dan experiences with your kids, I have one of my own...from the flip side...and it might just make you smile. I'm one those children who was subjected to Steely Dan night and day from the time I was conceived.(As a matter of fact, I was most likely conceived DURING a Steely Dan track.) I never thought much about them as a child..All I knew was that when I heard Steely Dan, I felt at home and I felt the wonderfully omniscient presence of Daddy.(Daddy was and is still a muscian, but his other job -to his neverending dismay-was engineering.I guess we had to eat.) When I was 20, I got tickets to see Steely Dan in Dallas. By this time I was a full fledged fan. My father and I went to see the show, sat in the mud (it had rained heavily all that day, and we had general addmission seats on the grass) got drunk and fell in love with our favorite passion all over again...together. This happened about 2 weeks after my parents divorce was final. I'm an only child and the divorce was very hard for me, as I have no other family besides my parents. So it was a pretty sappy moment, but none the less will be etched in my mind forever. I'm sorry if I bored anybody with my little sob story. But it just goes to show how important and close to my heart SD's music is. something I think we all can appreciate and understand.

Good to have a place to come home to.

You guys are all pretty great, and even if you're not, you at the very least make me smile every time I visit.

AMANDA: Thank you. Music is truly a wonderful thing.

Now for the real reason why I was inquiring about the browsers everyone uses. I am curious what people think of the background we are using? On both my computers everything looks great at 640x480 & 800x600 when viewed through Netscape. With IE it is a totally different story. The text flows over the left side. Something I don't like. Is it just my machine? Is this annoying anyone else? As to Edd's comment, well, the length is a conscious decision. You see, If I were to extend the overall image to 1024x760 or more, everyone (most of us) would have to constantly scroll around the page just to read the text (I've tried it). I don't think placing the text in a predetermined table is the answer either.

Anyway, enough of the technical crap.

I really enjoy coming here and reading all of your comments although I must admit they do make me feel somewhat inferior. I have never taken the music I love and broken it down. (Not to say that this is wrong in any way, just not for me). For me music is a total experience - it washes over me. It evokes emotions, memories, sentiments. It's almost as though if I were to dissect it to all it's various components it would break the spell.....that somewhere in the journey of searching for the reasons I like a piece of music I might de-personalize, de-mystify it in some way. I love Steely Dan music. (Yes, I think it's neat!) I don't know why - it just makes me FEEL.

I realize that this may be too simplistic for many of you, but that's my take.

Recently, I had a chance to listen to Rickie Lee Jones' "Pirates" for the first time in a while. I think it was her 2nd release, and it's no sophomore slump. Great songs and melodies: it's got some Dan leanings for sure. Song structures and the sound also remind me a little of Bruce Springsteen's The Wild, Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle when David Sancious was at the keys. I have been babysitting my mother's poodle 'Katy' (I named her) this week, and she really freaked when I put her in my car to bring her to my house (I live approx. 45 min. from my folks). She was jumping all over the place, in my face; I almost wiped out some trees, mailboxes, et al.. I didn't know how to calm her down, so I popped in Countdown to Ectasty and sang every song to her. It was amazing, she just sat right down and was quiet. I think she especially dug Razor Boy, YGT, and Pearl of the Quarter! And I had a blast singing them, although people in passing cars were looking at me kind of strange.:)

Re:Steely Dan addiction:

My name is Roy.....and I'm a dan addict. Since the street supply of dan has dried up in recent decades, I've tried a number of treatments. My research into the subject may be of help to some of you. The mainstream medical establishment will only prescribe the standard am/fm radio treatment. I found the dan percentage to be far too low to affect the tolerance I'd built up. Besides, am/fm is known to contain harmful toxins such as metal and bubble gum. I tried complete abstinence but developed psychological problems and ended up at the Sanford-Townsend Clinic being treated for danorexia. Encouraging long term results have been observed with a family of methadone-like substances known as jazz. Halfway programs have had success administering coltraine, brubeck, davis and parker (and even some old folk remedies like armstrong and ellington). The problem with these is that they aren't comercially available and a prolonged jazz regimen can lesd to funk deficiency (pre-berry anemia) which could require the patient to have direct hendrix injections. Synthetic dans have been developed that offer some relief. Some of the safer, more tested, laboratory dans are santana, sting, and mcdoobie ( a derivative which is actually part dan). Avoid foreign made synthetics such as littleriver, u2, and menatwork. You just don't know what's in them and these imports can be highly unstable. Remember that bad abba that took so many lives during the 70s? Some of the designer dans are laced with estrogen, e.g.: fleetwoodmac, rickylee, and eurithmic. These create a pleasant euphoria but can lead to personality disorders such as periodic bitterness and even a permanent condition known as Laura-Nyrosis. It appears that the current state of the art treatment for dan addiction is the recycling of existing batches of pure dan from the 70s thru early 90s. We'll have to make do with this until medical science or the B & F Foundation come up with a new cure.

I tell everyone else, you should not confused the Envious with the Envied. Just because Donald & Walter wouldn't talk to you back when you were stalking them in the 70's, doesn't mean you can start making passing judgement on the way they deal with their hired help. What do you expect them to do. Do you fraternize with your employees? Do you invite them to stay over at your house? Hang out? Shoot the breeze? All Fagen & Becker owe these guys is a paycheck, nothing more. But of course you wouldn't understand that pissboy because you sweedes aren't real men because you can't grow a real beard. Good point, Ruby Baby. Show Biz on continuous repeat helped to keep up the tempo AND since it's only one song played over and over, I lost track of real-time. Nothing worse than getting to the end of a CD to remind me of how pathetically long I've been scraping and painting. Repeat eliminates that totally.

Try Katy Lied while painting smaller rooms. The warm piano sound takes on a new life in the close quarters of a smaller room, like the bathroom. Just think of those chord changes in the intro of Dr. Wu. Something special.

Sue, LH, and other Phillys: tonight, tuesday, 8 till 9 pm on 88.9 WBZC. You got the right dynamic....

"But of course you wouldn't understand that pissboy because you sweedes aren't real men because you can't grow a real beard. Message to you pissboy, fuck off and die, commie. "

STOP for goodness sakes!!!!!

That piece of negative, un-called for bullshit has to stop. Why in the world does CLAS deserve a response like that? WHAT THE FUCK DID HE DO TO YOU?

In the past I've rarely ever responded directly to a post such as this. However, I cannot help myself any longer. I take full responsibility for the "negative vibe" that has permeated this GB over the last year or so. I often encouraged it. But lets understand something here. There is a big difference between being sarcastic, and attacking an individual. If you think that is what this band represents, well, again your wrong. To me Walter and Donalds music usually attacks concepts, not individuals (usually...). Attacking an individual while hiding behind the anonymity this forum provides is chickenshit.

So come to the DanFan Guestbook wearing your flame retardant clothing -- leave the bullet proof vest at home. We're all friends here.

Why does everyone keep defending Clas? Can't he fight his own battles?

Is Clas really worthy of such a defense? On Feb. 23(4:17) he actually threatened to kill another Guestbook member! That is the most offensive thing I have ever seen on the internet...so far! If people want to start choosing sides, they should pick their allies carefully!

Dear REALITY CHECKER; I can fight my own battles. But I have decided not respond to mr. R.O.C.K. He is not worth it. OK, I lost my temper when this mr. Philestrio (or whatever) accused me to have put in some perverted pictures in the GuestBook. I donīt know if you saw the pictures, it was real sick shit and I went crazy when he connected me with those pictures.

Anyway, wellcome to the GuestBook, mr Reality Checker.

Does anyone know anything about a mythical video from the Gaucho period.Yesterday I was asked about this for the second time in less than 6 MoI'm starting to wonder if it's some kind of hoax or what? Supposedly, Katz had shot some footage in the studio with the idea of turning it into a promo video of some kind, OR actually made a promo video that was killed before it ever came to fruition. Can anybody confirm any of this or is it just a bunch of BS? Inquiring minds and all that.

St. Al: I can't defend R.O.C.K., but isn't he behaving in much the same manner as Clas? Seems to me some of the more vitriolic and insulting posts over the last few months have been authored by our swedish friend....he who lives by the sword...Have a hard time believing that R.O.C.K. might be Kinky. Please do not confuse my intention. It was not to specifically defend CLAS or flame the hell out of ROCK. They were merely the examples of the moment. However, MOST of what is spewed forth from ROCK's keyboard is negative. Not so with Clas. Also, reality checker, the difference -- AGAIN -- is the post to which you refer was a knee jerk reaction from CLAS (my take) when ROCK incorrectly accused him of something. Yesterdays post from ROCK was an uncalled for attack. There is a distinction.

Re-read the post. The intention is to try to regain a slightly more positive vibe on this here GB. That's all. As far as my crack about Kinky, it's just been so long, I kinda miss him. Maybe I can pry him loose....

R.O.C.K in the USA Wed Mar 12 07:17:29 PST 1997

St. Al: Talk about uncalled for attacks! What do you call pissboy's bashing of D&W in their treatment of his sweedish brother George?

My problem with Clas is his America bashing, nothing else. I've never met the guy. All I know is he passes judgement on everyone from a Swediocentric attitude that is undeserved, unearned and insulting. And until the day he can provide specific examples of what the swwweeeedddish peoples have contributed to the world community, I say he can't pass judgement on our society or the popular culture that results from it. That includes Donald & Walter and if they decide to treat their tour sidemen the way almost everyone in capitalist societies treat their employess, fine. It's their fucking lives. It's their fucking money. I'm sure they would rather spend that so called quality time with their family and friends, not a bunch of their employess. So if I'm guilty of sticking up for Donald & Walter as well as the United States of America, well, sue me.

R.O.C.K.: At St. Al's suggestion, I reread Clas' post that apparently prompted your defensive tirade. Where's the America bashing? Hello everybody. It seems that while I was away everyone got a little testy. I personally don't think D or W would appreciate it...unless it's done in an incredibly subtle, cool, and enjoyable way for everybody, which it wasn't, but I love you all, so I don't care. I live in Dallas(YES...I'm from texas) but I grew up in Tyler(120 miles east of Dallas) and I come home on the weekends so that's why I have'nt said hi in awhile. I don't have a computer of my own, so I have to use my boyfriend's. Anyway I had a cool moment today. I thought for the longest time that I had lost my Nightfly cd, and when I was packing up my car to come home today(I'M ON SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!YYYYYEEEEAAA!!!!!) I found it in my trunk!!! I was so happy I almost puked, and I listened to it all the way from Dallas to Tyler. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH MIAMI!!!!!! I can't remember who it was but someone mentioned the book Perfume in response to something I said about it last week. I'm glad it was big in Germany. I don't know if it lost anything in the translation because I don't speak German, but if it did then it must of been pretty damn good to start out with. Anybody seen the movie Sling Blade? I just saw it last night and it was phenominal. Go see it. Well, lucky you, I'll be here for the next week and a half with acces to a computer, so I can o.d. on the gb and all the lovely obscure voices on it. I can't wait.

Seems to me that is a completely irrelevant criterea. I did say that you were behaving the same way that you accuse Clas of behaving. Read St. Al's post. Assholes do indeed come in all nationalities. Sorry but I'm not french. Your "joke" is nevertheless an insult to just about everybody. What would your joke have been if you thought I was black, jewish or female. I shudder at the thought. St. Al is right, technology is bitchen. Kinda hard to spew bigotted venom at someone when you have to guess why you should hate them, isn't it?

Anyway, if it was reported that THE TWO were rude or something, why not talk about it? Who ever said they were the nicest guys on the planet? However, it's been my experience that sometimes what is perceived as curtness is really not. Misunderstandings are abundant about these things.

While we on the subject of old Steely Dan concerts....Does anyone know if they played in San Diego (the old Balboa Stadium) either in the summer of 1976 or 1977. My hubby and I are at odds over this one. He says SD played a big outdoor concert with Frampton and Gary Wright (he thinks). I say I don't believe they were there (quite likely though I wasn't in my right mind!!) Appreciate it if you could help resolve this conflict....

The NYR+SR is the best sounding "live" album I have ever heard. All the songs are very crisp and clean with the sound up front.

I like AIA, but I think that NYR+SR sounds better.

AIA does have some great songs. Third World Man (slower/scarier/menacing Fagen vocals) and Aja (great chorus/harmony) are superb. I like them even more than the originals.

Would most people here agree that NYR+SR sound quality is a little better than AIA? If so why? Indoor vs. Outdoor venue(s) maybe?

m.e. I agree with your assessment of the sound on NYR&SR. My guess is that the venue (Beacon Theatre vs. outside stadiums) and the sound equipment used for the outside performances are the key differences in the crispness of the sound. DF produced both releases and Roger Nichols manned the board on AIA tours. I'd like to hear from others who would have more direct knowledge of those performances/equipment. I still love many of the performances on AIA. s Aja and TWM, the Book of Liars performance is also dazzling. There was something special about the way Warren Bernhardt, Drew Zingg, and Peter Erskine worked together with '93 SD

Good King Traveler: New York City presents a myriad of possibilities for hotel accomodations, as well as a myriad of opinions of people in or out of the know. I'll probably get flamed for some of my suggestions, but what the hell.

I haven't yet heard of a Motel 6 in Manhattan, but some of the less expensive chains include the Ramada Inn (West side, theatre district), the Holiday Inn (midtown). The Hyatt is a bit pricier. There are options, though. For instance, you could stay at a B&B in Brooklyn (one that I know of). No, the neighborhood isn't scary - actually it's quite nice. Park Slope, Brooklyn, is one of the fastest growing communities in the city, and for good reason. Prospect Park centralizes a liberal following of families, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, etc. The B&B I'm thinking of is right on the park and reasonable. So enough about my neighborhood.

If you can avoid staying in midtown as a general rule, that would help you avoid the tourist trappings. I prefer downtown. If you could contact your international travel agent, they would probably have the industry hots of the moment, but those above are some guidelines.

I'll ask at my company and see if I could get you a corporate discount, but I'll need travel details.

Anyway, if you get lost in NY, ask a New Yorker, they love to tell you where to go and what to do.

I have a question for all you musician type people out there. I play the piano and I was wondering if anyone knows of a book of Steely Dan's music, a fake book, guitar tablature, anything, that I can use as a guide just to learn the chords for some of the songs on the piano. If such a thing does not exist, would anyone that knows the chords to some of the songs(in particular, songs with more prominent piano parts, like Home At Last or Sign In Stranger) be kind enough to let me know what they are? I would be most appreciative.

Kinky Reinstating Star Wars Wed Mar 19 10:45:46 PST 1997

Morey Eel - I think it's obvious that the quality of NYR&SR is better than AIA, and here are my thoughts on why that is: The absence on AIA of Dave Hewitt & crew from Remote Recording Services. Dave has been involved in most of the great live recordings over the years, it seems that everything he touches turns to gold. Also, could it be that long time Dan engineer Elliot Scheiner was also not involved in the recording and mixdown process on AIA?

Your theory on the outdoor vs. indoor venues doesn't really stand up. Afterall, not every song on AIA was recorded outdoors, Babylon Sisters was from an indoor venue in St Pete, and it still doesn't have the quality of NYR&SR.

But then again, all this chatter really doesn't matter. Knowing our friends over at Steely Dan, these songs were probably all redone in the studio anyway. But you probably figured this on your own, considering you quoted the word "live". But, hey, I'm sure that the applause was legit.

I'm sure I've said this before, but anywaze...

Most of the published Steely Dan music sux, ranging from down-right wrong to over simplified. It got better as time went on, with the tunes from "Gaucho" being remarkably close in spite of the complexity of the pieces.

Even the "Scores" compilation, while a worthwhile acquisition, has its' moments.

Plan on spending about about 90% of your time figuring out what's wrong and fixing it...

As for the Scots debate (a Grant and a Murray clan by descent), I lived there for a few years and remember most of the measuring system in pints and parts of gills, though they do have their own currency. And as for Shakespeare ('the Scottish play'?), Amanda/queenie, it's been a while since college but I guess between us we can come up with a bit of help. What's the assignment?

As for the NYR&SR and AIA debate (this is the Danfan page after all), the renderings of Pretzel Logic and Lonely Teardrops are true class and beautifully recorded (the video ain't bad either) but, with ordinary hifi, I have to take AIA as the next true step towards Dan-enlightenment.

The new Charlie Haden/Pat Metheny release is called "Beyond The Missouri Sky". It is a mostly acoustic CD with Metheny doing some fills on keyboards here and there. If you like Pat's ballads and/or his album "New Chautauqua", then you'll love this one. A very melodic, introspective, folky feel to it. Pat and Charlie have never played better together. It's also got some "80/81" type of stuff on it ala "Two Folk Songs". Do get it! The "Cinema Paradiso Theme" is especially beautiful.

Again?!? Another Josie epidemic? Some of you people are coming on here like this is a social chat board. If you want to discuss ancestory and homework, why don't you find your own fucking forum. This place is ridiculous, no wonder all the regulars stopped posting.

Why is it that everytime someone posts something relevant or interesting, no one responds? Morey Eel brings up an interesting topic, and the teenyboppers respond by talking about their homeland. And the rest of you hard up cases see a so-called female and egg them on (I mean, from Gold Malcolm we expect it), but this is a STEELY DAN board, isn't it?

I guess the only conclusion I can make is that your lack of response signifies your lack of knowledge of the band, which is OK. But why don't you shutup and try to learn something, or else go somewhere else.

And Queenie, don't flatter yourself.

Kink & Eel: I don't have AIA here at work but I think it's clearly stated in the sleeve(?) that there was some "corrections" made in the studio. Let me guess that it was mainly the vocals.

BOB TEDDE MrSQUONK@CTS.COM Thu Mar 20 03:10:03 PST 1997

KINKY: Rumour has it DF digitized the audience response and painstakingly shifted each hand clap to create the perfect audience feel for each tune. Notice the laid back swing feel of the applause following AIA'S "Reelin'" BTW, heartfelt thank yous for your generous offer. Our inability to accept was based soley on econcs. Our best case financial scenario had us breaking even, a situation tannenmount to taking a week off. This might be an acceptable situation further on up the road, but as I explained to Pete, it would have been somewhat crippling in the record slow first quarter we had. I hope the offer might be good at a later date, although my personel financial needs are about to under go those changes that happen when one brings a new Dan Fan into the world. Question: Do you think home field advantage had much if anything to do with NYR&SR's superior sound quality? It seems to me that having the venue so close at hand AND twice as many chances at getting it right would weigh in heavily as quality factors. The outdoor / indoor argument doesn't hold too much water as everything was close-mic'ed anyways. Just a thought. Kudos for doing your homework on this one.

Perhaps EddC and some of you bodhisattvas of musical analysis can check me out on this: I was listening to the bridge of "Through With Buzz" (I remember when he stole my girl...) and was intrigued by the spacing of the high hat (or cymbal, or whatever that little 'tsssshhtt' is). The high hat is hit only four times during the bridge, the first two times after 8-1/2 beat pauses and the last two times after 6-1/2 beat pauses. Unsymmetrical but catchy.

Another nifty percussionism is the sparsity of the snare in "Everything You Did". There's only about 5 hits in the first minute of the song and they're all positioned unexpectedly and perfectly.

Do B&F micromanage the percussion or do they issue the drummers artistic license?

lovebob: Hilarious! at last Wendell put to good use. I think that the loss of Eliot Scheiner on AIA was a good point. and lb's mention of the clos-mic set-up would seem to reduce the impact of the venue. I'm not an audio engineer, but I find it hard to believe that you could get the same sound from Carnegie (sp?) Hall vs. Shea Stadium? or Cameron Indoor Stadium (acoustics were fine-tuned for Ella Fitzgerald) vs Greensboro Coliseum (both indoors) I think an amateur could man the board and it would sound good at Carnegie. The midi or other electronic equipment could be plugged in directly, but what about the mics picking up vocals, saxes, drums etc? Assuming, of course, these were not re-recorde in the studio. I'd like a technical tutorial on how clos-mics work on that.

For the sake of argument I'll stick to my guns for two anecdotal reasons. First of all, seeing and hearing NYR&SR twice on In Concert (ABC late nighte), it seemed that the sound was tremendously crisp, and the sound seemed too open (slight echo, etc) to be close-mic'ed.

Second of all, there are significant differences in the sound in AIA from song to song (venue to venue) and big differences in the clarity between the soft passages and louder passages, with more disortion, cloudiness of sound in the louder passages. The equipment used for larger venues (whether indoors or outdoors) is made for survival at the expense of some sound quality. While a good bit of this I'm sure can be cleaned up afterwards (is it the cleanup that makes the difference?), from a very simplistic perspective if Power = Current X Voltage, Amps made for larger and less acoustically pure venues inherently must use more current which means more heat and wear and tear. Plus the stuff is lugged around, the emphasis is on sturdiness. Even with today's technology, power amps will have greater distortion. Plus the sound waves at these venues tend to bounce around a lot (often out of phase) muddying the overall sound. LB, Kink or someone else may be able to explain this.

As to the responses, Kink, you may still scare a few folks off. But you're right, you out to stick to Dan if you think Austin is a hick town. Austin has a greater density of liberals than a Mario Cuomo speaking engagement. The University of Texas has more National Merit Scholars than any other university. The population is very diverse with folks of German, Hispanic, Czech, African American, Spanish, some French or Cajun types who moved from the Houston area, and of course a few Scots and Irish for good measure There are trmendous fine arts facilities and lots of music and some of the best food (although much different) outside Louisiana

Dr Mu, I don't know if you knew, but that NYR&S video that you saw on In Concert was a different show than the one on the album. The CD was recorded in March at the Beacon Theater, and the video was shot five months later at The Academy Theater in NY.

Per request, I added a live sound byte from a band that played at Le Bar Bat, to my page. It's a Doobie Brothers tune, but features Cornelius Bumpus on vocals and Drew Zingg on guitar.

Bob, I like your applause theory. I think I heard my clap but it was definitely messed with. We're thinking of putting something from Rockola on the page (With a Gun-live?), what do you think?

Hey everybody. It has been a long, long time since my last post to this place, but I see that not much has changed, except that now there are TWO college students named Amanda who do not seem to know about capital letters. That's OK, girls, I'm not criticizing; just stating an observation.

I want to say thank you to Edd for his interesting dissections of SD songs, and also want to request more. They're a pleasure to read, despite the fact that I only understand about half of what's being said. Hey, I never said I was a musician -- I just beat on dead animal skins stretched across wooden cylinders.

Not that I mean to be social or anything, but Hi to Clas and Hi to Ruby.

Now LB or someone else who understands sound...we who want to learn are waiting to read your response to DrMu's post. By the way, LB, how about bringing your band to Jamaica? We could, like, party together or something, yes?

Pete again Thu Mar 20 12:15:22 PST 1997

Just to get an idea of what songs you might like to hear, on your next post could you let me know if you would be interested in tunes such as "Dallas" or, let's say, a song written by Fagen and recorded by Diana Ross?

Thanks

Hi, all! Thanks for the bday wishes - Clas, you've got a giant-sized mouth but I love ya anyway!

I've got a music question: About 21/2 minutes into Change of the Guard, a very cool sliding thing happens. I suppose it's a guitar, but which kind and who did that - Walter? Denny? Skunk?

Hey, can I get a birthday kiss from Waltdog? love,Ruby

Lonnie and Johnny in their playrooms Thu Mar 20 13:40:06 PST 1997

Ruby, I'm not sure but I think that's a pedal steel.

Pete, I really like that clip with Cornelius, wow, I never knew he could sing. And American Lovers sounds great, where can I find it? I've heard of a tribute album to Monk with Fagen contributing something. If you have that, I'd love to hear it!

I've heard Dallas, but you got me on the Diana Ross thing.

majordudeĐ frontier@uscom.com Thu Mar 20 13:44:38 PST 1997

On the NYR&SR v. AIA thing.......

I prefer Rock n' Soul. Not for the sound "quality" but because the band sounds more alive than on "Alive". Was it the newness of the band, that they still had a nervous edge?

When it comes to AinA, I listen to it but it doesn't do much for me when it's more pleasure to listen to a full show. Shows at the beginning and end of the tour sound like the band is more "into" it. Especially, on Phoenix 1994 (The Donald laughs and everyone has a big ol' Kelly lapping). Was St. Louis 93 the end of the tour? The final medley has that awesome jam with Donald on keytar, Walter and Zingg-doggy. AinA doesn't seems to capture that energy.

IMHO,

maj.

DrMu livefromnowhere Thu Mar 20 13:46:51 PST 1997

Pete: Thanks for your insight. I had assumed that the film was recorded at Beacon, also. What can you tell me about the acoustics/set up differences Beacon and the Academy?

Edd Cote eddcote@ultranet.com Thu Mar 20 14:25:20 PST 1997

re: "Slidey thing in 'Change Of The Guard'"

I've no idea who did it, but it's a pretty simple trick accomplished by dragging the edge of the pick down the length of one or more *wound* strings.

While the main component of the sound slides down because the point at which the pick contacts the string is constantly changing causing the portion of the string over the pickup to get 'longer'. There's also a portion of the sound that slides *up*, played by the part of the string that's getting shorter.

The timbre also changes, mostly as a result of the change in where the string is vibrated from. Strings picked near the end have a much more trebley, metallic sound while picking in the middle makes them sound rounder and fatter (or flatulent in the case of basses).

Edd

Lonnie & Johnny: The same guy who did American Lovers also did another DF/WB song called "Jones". I posted back in February, asking if anyone had heard these, but no response.....

Pete petefogel@asan.com Thu Mar 20 15:25:28 PST 1997

Lonnie & Johnny: American Lovers might be tough to find, but it's out there somewhere. I agree, Cornelius has a great voice, but unfortunately, the quality of AU doesn't do these songs justice. I have that Monk tribute album, the song Donald did was "Reflections", which also featured Steve Kahn. I'll put that up sometime.

Jam. Dude: I have "Jones" too, which I will also get to sooner or later. What did you think of American Lovers? I think that's a great early tune of theirs.

Great soundbite compilation gig Pete! NY R&SR is right on For Pretzel Logic but as for rest- I'll take AIA instead- certifed DAN material no matter (no how well-or not) executed is always preferable. But as for NY R&SR the Holland vinyl pressing is a breathtaking "you are there" quality piece. Relative to the "hometown theory of sonic superiority" I can only say that the Roseland shows also sounded killer(as well as great execution). My over all opinion is that the band should abandon "sheds" and other inferior venues for the prospect of delivering higher QUALITY product to the serious fan- simply charge $200/ticket face and do 2 shows @ each location @ "music hall & Performing Atrs Centers". my idea as far as the lackluster feel of aia goes is that the energy was lost in the mixdown. i went to a show, and it wasn't sleepy like that... the acoustics of the venue may have something to do with it, but really not that much...

RubyBaby; Iīm sorry, couldīnt help myself.

Jamaican; Hi! Nice to see you! Iīve been wondering were youīve been!

Pete Fogel; Funny thing you mentioned Diana Ross, I saw Jojje in an interview on TV a year ago and he was asked about the artists he had been touring with. Steely Dan was an old dream cometrue. But Diana Ross was not that fun. - If you wanted to speak with her you had to ask someone to ask someone to ask somebody who could ask mrs Ross if was possible for her to speak with... (this is not anti-USA-propaganda!)

QUESTIONS; Bad Sneakers; In Steely Dan Complete the lyrics says "... and one more champ who isīnt here..." But to me it sounds like Fagen sings "...one more chimp/chip/chick who isīnt here..."

And in the same book the notation of the melody in the refrain of Razor Boy is totally wrong to me. I donīt have Countdown on Cd and the vinyl is totally whacked up after thousands of listenings so I canīt check.

Anyone? Edd?

Suffering through VH1's '70s Week finally paid off.

Although it was as rare a moment as Donald jumping around on stage, VH1 aired a still photo of some musicians in the studio. It was not SD, but Donald was right of center. I can't see clearly through the red wine, but it might have been during a documentary of Curtis Mayfield. Or maybe not. It was Donald in jeans and sweater.

How can it be that one of the most talented composers of the 70's go virtually unmentioned during this so-called 70s flashback week. Screw you VH1 execs, I hope you get stuck behind a fivesome of Ricky's on the golf course.

Walter would make an excellent guest on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. G. Gordon Liddy on the same show would be a blast. How bout it?

Finally, Try this if you have cable TV: Tune into the Classic Sports Network for a repeat of a 70's 80s Lakers game and put on Glamour Profession really loud, on repeat. You are there!!!!!!

The trip we made to Hollywood is etched upon my mind Fri Mar 21 09:22:47 PST 1997

I can see that I'm gonna hafta get my hands on that NYR&SR. Are George & I the only ones not enjoying it yet? Der Steppenwolf is all the way in Germany - what's my excuse? (Just thought I'd throw that in before somebody else said it)

I can't recall who said they loved the Reelin' from AIA, but I feel the same way. There's something special about it. If I listen to it as I'm getting ready for a date, it puts me in a really good "date mood". If that song is on while I choose an outfit, I'll wear a tight black dress w/ fishnets as opposed to jeans & a sweater. Doesn't matter where we're going - we always have fun. What IS it about that song?

Major: I would stay up way past my bedtime to see Walter on Politically Incorrect anyday! Liddy would be toast, don't you think?

PS: you're the multi-media king of the world, as far as I know.

PPPPPCCCCC: dAn quAle did it

lb: to hazard a guess at my own question, the signal must travel in a closed mic system from microphone to mixing board then to loud speakers. This would reduce the effect of the venue, but even if all parties on stage are gehind the speakers, some sould will travel back and must be filtered or tolerated. But a closed mic system seems like a Stratevaius (sp?) without the chamber inside the wooden frame: no richness.

Anyway, gently encourage your bud to look for "the bald-headed kid" when they go in. He (me) is very Dan-friendly. I hope we get to meet soon.

His response (without any prior mention of the boys)? He felt listening to his sister's Steely Dan records at age 11 began steering him that way...

Pete F - Nice soundbytes. I'd like to know where you got that Dias song from. Have any more? I still have never heard Apogee, been trying to get my hands on that for years. What's up with Our Lawn? I actually have a DAT of that one from '93, is yours a soundboard or audience recording? Don't forget - Our lawn is dying but our guestbook is dead!

How about Rockolga and Drew Zinggg on With a Gun? My memory of Tedde being as good as I thought he was, is fading.

So where did Donald cop his idea for that Steam Power 10 Kamakiri vehicular thingy? I'll leave that up to all of you but know this... It has been well established that both Mr. Fagen and one Mr. William Gibson are members of a rather elite mutual admiration society. To wit, Don quotes Gibson and Gibson quotes Don in their respective mediums. Gibsons 1991 novel "The Difference Engine" features a steam powered mechanical computer... Coincidence? I think not!

As has been discussed, Gibson's 1996 "Idoru" features a chapter entitled "Here At The Western World" and his influencial "Neuromancer" features a bar called "The Gentleman Loser"... If ya wanna read more, why not jack in right now...

My 14 year old son is writing a term paper on Steely Dan for his English class. (He selected the subject, not me.) As part of the assignment, he had to include a short audio example of one of the artists' works. When he asked me if I had any suggestions, it occured to me that you could pretty much pull any of their studio numbers at random and get a great example of Steely Dan's artistry. I did suggest that he eliminate the ones that Donald Fagen didn't sing and don't use the one that might make school teachers sound kinky (EGTTM), but aside from those, I don't think they've made a single cut that you couldn't proudly present to a non-danophile. He chose "Any Major Dude".

Not giving up the ghost yet. I was listening to the '93 St. Louis concert last night. ...and have to say that quite a few of the numbers compared favorably with NYR&SR: the instrumental medley of Royal Scam/Bad Sneakers/Aja, IGY, Book of Liars, Green Flower Street, Countermoon/Teahouse medley, and the magnificent Home at Last not to mention Chain Lightning. Chain Lightning makes for a nice comparison as the arrangements are similar to NYR&SR. At least part of the sound difference large # of '94 recordings. Replacing Wadenius for Zingg and Chambers for Erskine could have had a large impact on the chemistry and sound. Can anyone comment who say BOTH the '93 and '94 tours? Is anybody out there? Certainly, operation of the soundboard and mixing are critical. But, I'm still unconvinced that a soundboard recording eliminates completely the effects of the venue. I'm still waiting for technical details

Hello people...

How have you all been???

Yes, I have been away for 2 weeks. Reason! My wife and I have just become parents. A cool daughter, Chloe. Born Sunday, March 16 at 6.45 GMT.

She has no problem with cooling out to the Dan sound; she got enough of it while she was inside my wife anyway! She sits in her little bouncy chair and is permanently cool. To all those of yo with no kids yet, do it. she was born on her due day and my dad, who is in the guitar biz, said that her timing indicates good musicality. Cool heh.

Gotta concur with Dr. Mu on the St. Louis '93 stuff. The energy level and overall sound quality are superior to AIA. As to the technical reasons for this? Well, IMHO special care was simply not taken to preserve the band-width and transient response of each performance. I also suspect that some toast decided to run the master through some bogus, newfangled DBX machine at the last minute! Or, maybe I'm just not observing the R.I.A.A. curves properly... Who knows?

One things for sure, it's definitely not the bizarre mentations of Roger Nichols at the soundboard that leaves AIA wanting. He is directly responsible for the excellent sound quality of the St. Louis '93 stuff. Jeezus, he's tweaking and editing in real time!

Like any great live recording, St. Louis '93 contains all of the blemishes and excitement of the actual event. Imagine how different "Filmore East" would be without Barry Oakley's early bass line over Duane Allmans solo on "One Way Out"? Or Zappa's flubbed intro on "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 6"... Let's try that again...

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love AIA. "Green Earrings", "Reelin'" and "Third World Man" (that Zingg solo just breaks your heart every time) are all magnificent. But I do prefer NYR&SR and St. Louis '93...

Goodnight Austin Texas wherever you are!

Joe Murtha - I was wondering why you are giving Roger Nichols credit for the sound of the live shows. From my understanding, Roger was on the stage mixing the sound for the monitors, which has nothing to do with the house sound. I agree that the sound quality of St. Louis ' 94(sp (really '93)) is as good as AIA, but I think the NYR+SR is the sonically superior recording. Every song on it sounds crisp and clean, like the band is jamming in your living room. I still believe that the venues may be largely responsible for the sound quality difference. Indoor vs. Outdoor...Theater vs. Custerdome.

O.K., now the question is, "How can some small bootleg company out of Italy take a soundboard tape of 1 show and create a recording that is- as good, if not better than AIA?

AIA should be the better recording when you consider: They...

1.-had access to better mixdown equipment... 2.-had the luxury of selecting the very best tracks from over 50 shows 3.-were able to re-record vocals and music later on in a studio setting...

To the new Dad: Way to go! Doesn't Donald sing "Not my Chloe" at the end of "Tomorrow's Girls"? Inspiration???

San Fran: Congrats. Kids are great. Easter Eggs in a couple of years.

Reference in the most recent Scott Turow book, "The Laws of Our Fathers", to "Hey Nineteen". Specifically to the line "the Cuervo Gold, the fine Colombian, make tonight a wonderful thing". No doubt that he (along with most of us who were able to listen to the song in context in the 70's) knows "the fine Colombian" is _not_ an alcoholic beverage. DrMu the secret of success Fri Mar 28 09:14:36 PST 1997

IF: Knowledge is Power Time is Money and as every engineer knows, Power is Work over Time.

So, substituting algebraic equations for these time worn bit of wisdom,we get:

K = P (1) T = M (2) P = W/T (3)

Now, do a few simple substitutions:

Put W/T in for P in equation (1), which yields: K = W/T (4)

Put M in for T into equation (4), which yields:

K = W/M (5).

Now we've got something. Expanding back into English, we get:

Knowledge equals Work over Money.

What this MEANS is that:

1. The More You Know, the More Work You Do, and 2. The More You Know, the Less Money You make.

Solving for Money, we get:

M = W/K (6) Money equals Work Over Knowledge.

From equation (6) we see that Money approaches infinity as Knowledge approaches 0, regardless of the Work done.

What THIS MEANS is:

The More you Make, the Less you Know.

Solving for Work, we get

W = M x K (7) Work equals Money times Knowledge

From equation (7) we see that Work approaches 0 as Knowledge approaches 0.

What THIS MEANS is:

The rich do little or no work.

Working out the socioeconomic implications of this breakthrough is left as an exercise for the reader.

(passed on from an engineer)

Roy.Scam @standarddeviations Fri Mar 28 09:43:55 PST 1997

Dr.Mu: I dispute Equation (6). My knowledge is practically zero and I make nowhere near infinity. In fact, as my knowledge assymptotically approaches zero, the slope of my money appears to be negative. Maybe I need to apply the T/M factor (which makes Time out of Mind).

Flocko: Thanks for the insight on TIS. I'm a Dad and I doubt that I would be embarassed by the scenario you described, but if it really started to bother me, I could just tell Junior to drive into the next song and let the Countermoon take care of it.

Katz wanted to keep the studio going, despite their differences, but Donald wanted it for himself.

Let's not make too much out of the Katz/Fagen deal. Remember that Gary really hasn't had anything to do with Steely Dan since the mid-80s or so. So if Donald now owns River Sound by himself, that just means he doesn't have to bother dealing with Gary when booking sessions for the studio. Might even make things easier for SD to finish up their new album. They're probably doing most of the recording in Hawaii anyway. The only negative I can think of, is probably Donald wouldn't be making any more guest appearances on Katz-produced albums for other people, which is no big deal.

Kato @Heaven's Gate Sat Mar 29 15:40:14 PST 1997

YGK: Did Fagen or Katz fire the staff? Sounds like Fagen's out of the studio business, unless he's going to bring in a new staff. I wonder if Roger Nichols might want to move to Manhattan?

Wow, a spat...

SFKnight: Chloe. Did you cry? Such a wonderful gift!

MuMan: The StL board dub -- very exciting stuff. What got me was how my first listen to it zapped me back to the CHI show. Those opening chords and percussive strokes of the medley stung me, and still do. (((((woo!))))) I don't feel qualified to pass judgement on which performance is better(NYRnSR, AIA, or StL), I enjoy each for different reasons.

johnboy: This whole make a $M on dubs thing makes me ill!!! I've quietly inquired here how a guy/gal could get a hold of some stuff (e.g., RE: the video), but it no avail. Oh well... wanna dub of the StL show? E me for my address and details.

Bob=Edd: Thanks for the info, that board arrangement makes a lot of sense.

queenie/Amanda: That BF5 CD is all the rage about campus. I sampled a couple cuts while browsing the bead shop -- aye, clean.

Hey, is that Hiram Bullock playin' lead on Barbara Mandrell's "If Lovin' You Is Wrong?" hmm.

Arizona is real. No wonder the Big Hole annually tops the international visitation list! Sedona rocks - duh! Also, the Vegas run was excellent -- walked away a winner. The Organ Pipe Cactus Nat'l. Mon. is outer-worldly. Danger is real.

Ruby Baby,

I address this to you, because, in many ways, you've become my defacto sounding board, when I need to chime in to the Dan world.

Got an email from my little bro, he's 31, divorced with a 10 yr old son. When I was 16, and he was 9, I turned him on to the newly released Katy Lied. From then on, he seemed to have a better understanding of classic rock, as it was being made. When I took to the Bee Gees, attracted to the string lines that kept many a hollywood musician in money, and me on the dance floors and in the beds of spandex clad big haired females, he never diverted, listening to Aerosmith, Molly Hatchet, Leonard Skinnard, Dan, etc. Anyway, not to wax to philosophically, I received and email from him tonight, telling me that he was going to a KISS concert! I replied to him that I had gone to 2 KISS concerts in 1973 and 1974. This is where I really began to trip.

This fertile guest book is filled with people like myself that discuss music that was, for the most part, written over 20 years ago. When I finally bought a CD player 9 years ago, I filled my CD collection with Steely Dan, Elton John, Supertramp, Chicago, Pink Floyd, etc. Retrospectively, 85 - 90 percent of my collection is pre 1980.

Bottom line: Who is writing music today that I would listen to in 2017?!? It scares me to think that 20 years from now, the only music that will be worth discussing will be that which was written 40 years prior!

Jesus, I hate Celine Dion!!!

Waiting for the coordinates of Ruby Baby Comet, hoping that the leader will allow me to shed my husk with jewels intact . . .

eric

StAlphonzo stalfnzo@seanet.com Sat Mar 29 23:52:04 PST 1997

Eric: Allow me to answer your question about who will be considered "valid" in the year 2017....

Peter Gabriel, Dave Matthews Band, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Cowboy Junkies (Michael Timmons is a fabulous songwriter), Counting Crows (Adam Duritz is getting better with age), REM, Pearl Jam (say what you will about Eddie Vedder. If you don't get it your too old), Neil Young is writting some of his best stuff, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Los Lobos, Sting (not a fan but I recognize his talent), Lyle Lovett, Bruce Hornsby, Phish (mark my words on this one), John Hiatt, Soundgarden, etc, etc.

Ok, so what is "valid". Is it amount of records sold? Is it household name? If so, my mother knows who Pearl Jam and is. She hasn't a CLUE who Supertramp is and I haven't lived with her since Breakfast in America (give or take a year) was popular.

You are correct. Most of us on this GB talk about those bands you mention. Steely Dan is one of my all time FAVORITE bands, but BOY HOWDY ther's a ton of GREAT new music out there. I'll tell you another thing. There is one person on your list that you must take off. This is due to the fact that he hasn't put out anything worth a shit since "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player".....

Chew on this. Your attitude is akin to what my Grandfather used to say... "Patrick! There hasn't been ANY good music since the days of Glen Miller"

It's all a matter of perspective.

Peace,
StAl

PS. KISS alway has, and always will, SUCK MY WANG.

Eric: Let me add a few to St Al's list: Clapton, Van Morrison, U2 (even though IMHO the new album sucks. Just like disco music did and still does.), Metheny, Knoppfler, Beck, and a more than a few I'm I haven't thought about. Also some big, but as yet unrealised, potential: Paula Cole, Blues Traveler, Ben Folds Five, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Keb Mo'...the list is too long to type.

St. Al: What's with the dick thing on this board?

Earthbound. Thanks. Will e-mail you in the next couple of days.

It's a Steely kinda couple of weeks in NYC...

Featured in the jazz clubs are:

The Tom Scott Quartet, otherwise known as Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. I still think Tom's horn chart on the "Black Cow" outro is the single greatest horn chart in pop music history (but I'm of course biased)... They're at "The Iridium" Tuesday through Sunday.

Dan trumpet player extarordinaire Randy Brecker will be appearing at "The Blue Note" in NYC next week...

Joe Murtha JGMurtha@aol.com Mon Mar 31 09:33:49 PST 1997

Just some highly speculative anechdotal nonsense on my part but, what the hell;

D'ya think Tom Scott's and Randy Brecker's appearences in NYC this week coupled with Don's "falling out" with Gary Katz over at River Sound, etc. may all be related to the new Dan album? I mean, there are an awful lot of past and present Dan types congregated in NYC right now... This combination of events is quite intriguing IMHO.

There does seem to be a correlation between NYC club dates by a particular musician and a guest appearance by that musician on some new release. Recently, Metheny's appearance at "The Knitting Factory" with Derek Bailey coincided with the recording dates on the new Charlie Haden release "Beyond The Missouri Sky", which Metheny guested on.

In an on-line interview back in March of '96, Tom Scott mentioned that he was flying out to Hawaii to meet with Walter to discuss some future recording prospects... Now, although that interview was over a year ago, that's nothing in Steely Dan time.

Joe

mWorld - Chick Corea's Bud Powell thang swings into town this week at "The Blue Note" in NYC... What a friggin' lineup!

Jarrett fans: Jarrett/DeJohnette/Peacock at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC.

YGK .. Mon Mar 31 10:22:45 PST 1997

Joe M: I saw a Jarrett trio at Avery Fisher some years back - 1989?

The hall doesn't support a trio well - the drums sounded loud and ugly like he was playing a cardboard box, and you couldn't hear Jarretts 'vocals' - a disappointing show - couldn't even hear Peacock.

Your theory as to the musicians related to the Dan is an intersting one - perhaps Pete Fogel can shed some light on it. He seems to be in some helluva loop with regards to the Dan.

Of lighter (actually, heavier) note I was introduced to a recording which I think was recently released, despite its being recorded in the 60's. Anyway, if you love horns, and can tolerate what was the beginning of free jazz, check out "Mingus - Antibes 60". Not a lot of dissonance - tho some - but incredible performances from everyone involved - Eric Dolphy, Bud Powell, Mingus, Dennie Richmond, and a few others I can't recall. The best music I've heard in a while, besides AJA - although it's different. They tawk too ya! Wowski!

YGK

Kinky Mowing Our Lawn Mon Mar 31 11:39:33 PST 1997

JGMurtha - Thanks for your posts, they're the only things that make me want to reply anymore. As for your theory on SD musicians in NYC being some sort of "sign"...they're in town every week. If your theory was correct, there would be 35 Steely Dan albums out already this year. In fact, it's rare if some of these players aren't in town in a given week, this is NYC afterall. Besides, the Breckers or any of the others you've mentioned haven't played a note on a SD/Becker/Fagen album in 15 years. What makes you so sure the new album will be different from Kamakiriad or 11TOW?

And what do the changes at River Sound have to do with any of this?

Oh, and your Pat Metheny idea is absurd. So, he played with Derek Bailey and showed up on a release by Charlie Haden...so what? Metheny plays in Manhattan all the time and is a guest on countless other albums. Larry Carlton's going to be at the Blue Note in July, does this mean he's going to be on the new Steely Dan album, or maybe a Crusaders album, or Michael Franks, or Joni Mitchell, or maybe he just wants to do a show. Get my point? Joe, your imagination is running wild...wishful thinking tho'.

Kinkster,

I have new the issue of Saxophonist Magazine and they have an interview with Tom Scott who said that he will be doing the horn arrangements for the upcoming Steely Dan album. I'm really excited since he did such a great job on Aja. Maybe Donald & Walter are having second thoughts on going with no-names like Wadenius and Zingg and might start using brand name musicians again.

How can one possibly wonder "what's with the dick thing" on this board? It's a freakin' Steely Dan guestbook, you dildo-head!!

Heard "Countermoon" as I rolled into the Wendy's in Moorestown NJ for lunch today.

Kama has to be the best "test drive" disk of all time. Check this out:

Lucky Henry and I hooked up Saturday morning at Daddypop's for breakfast and a pre-car buying strategy session. I had already selected Kama for the test drive knowing that the 97 Nissan Pathfinder had a cd player as standard equipment (But no tape player!! What about listening to the boots??) The salesman handed me the keys and away we went in this cool rolling bubble. We hit the highway and off-road giving the truck the once-over-twice while crusing about a thousand miles an hour. We got a little silly ;> then headed back to the dealer for the negotiations. Lucky ran interference when he sensed that I was getting annoyed by the salesman's lack of appreciation for our tight schedule. After all, I came to jam out on Josie and Chain.

After a few hours, we walked out with a new Pathfinder, substantially below dealer invoice, and headed down the avenue like we owned the street.

I highly recommend Kama to pump you up into a "take no prisoners" frenzy when you go buy your next car.

Earthbound: I'm looking forward to hearing the Hiram solo, but I'm greatly in hopes that I won't have to listen to a lot of Barbara M.'s records. Nothing against country, just never could get my toe to tap for the M sisters. I saw a sort of former Dan member (well not really a member but an important hired hand) , Mark Knopfler, on a video on the Nashville channel; he was jamming, picking, and grinning with Chet Atkins. Best country picking I've heard since "With a Gun". But I guess there's probably about 1351 guitar pickers in Nashville that play twice as better than I will. Sorry, jazz guys, I know it's not cool to talk shitkicker here in birdland.

I just noticed yesterday that the "Jerry Maguire" sound track has the song "Horses", sung by Ricki Lee Jones, co-written and produced by WB. Good song, Would have been a great twelfth stack of whack.

RE the new album: Somebody please tell me we're not setting ourselves up for a dissappointment here. I've now listened to mid 90's new material from the Eagles, the Band, and even the lads from Liverpool. They were all competent but uninspiring. Are we putting too much pressure on them? What are the odds of another Countdown to Ecstacy? Sure, it'll be better than anything recorded by anyone on this planet since 11 SOW; but will it be as good as we demand it to be? Tough chore (dirty work).

Are you an ordinary Guy? , RS

Dr. Mu: you are like, so shit awful funny with this equation stuff. Geez, you must be a genius. Knowledge is power. Whoa. Stand back. Time is money, even deeper. The only rational thought was PPPowerr equals WWwork over TTtimee.

Maybe Power equals the potential to have work performed. For instance, you have knowledge of an embarassing little fact about someone. You could blackmail them into mowing your grass for three weeks. The potential energy of this knowledge would be funneled into a conduit resulting in work over time. Or the person could just shoot your ass in which case this potential energy doesn't perform any work but is simply dissipated thru losses. Huh. I think knowledge is potential energy. What can an obviously self absorbed Dr. Mu do with this? Pprobably nothing as cute as his previous effort.

K=E=e(t), knowledge is a function of time. K'=E'=e'(t), and if you assume must peoples learning curves are linear, K'=E'=constant, which in Dr. Mu's case would be about 0.25 or his IQ.

Forget the Time is Money stuff, no amount of money can add one day to length of a man's life.

Oh and by the way, 11TOW sucks. I love the Dan but 11TOW proves another time worn adage, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

BTW Dr Mu, what takes more energy/work, to walk up a flight of steps taking one at a time or two at a time?

Playing - Saxophonist Magazine? Never heard of that one, must be for musicians only. Going for brand names isn't a bad idea, afterall, that's one of the things Steely Dan's famous for. However, I wouldn't classify Zingg as a no-name, at least since SD showcased his talents. Come to think of it, I hear his name in conjunction with Steely Dan a lot more these days than I do Steve Kahn or Dean Parks, among fans anyway, and isn't that what it's about?
