Definitely a dude ranch-greetings from San Diego's finest gay bar! No, I haven't crossed to the other side (I'm the only woman in here, anyway) there's just a great internet set up here. More rumors of the New One-should we start rumors of the 2002 tour? The 2002 Danfest schedule?
Hi Lisa G., we missed you! Hi Blaisie, missed you, too!
lp-in pearls for the night meeting? I've got one, too. How the heck do you maintain family life? I couldn't imagine having this job and kids, too. I've gone from fantasizing about living Kelly McGillis's life in "Top Gun" to fantasizing about being June Cleaver and serving a nice roast.....
Back to work now (bye boys!)
Aja
Wow! Nice to be missed.
steviedan-what up? You still teaching privately?
Howard!!!!!!!!! I missed "hanging" with you, too. On MOA, I have to say, "whew!" I was missing the goods on Aja and Black Cow, and I didn't even think about it but yeah, they did virtually no board work on them, although they paid the performances some well-deserved homage. Also, I missed “I Got the News.” "Broadway Duchess" would have been cool to hear. (I needed more M. McD to satisfy me.) Yes, all the musicians were so reverent of the whole production, well with the exception of Purdie who was reverent of himself, but still he was awesome to watch and hear. All this aside, I felt like MOA was just the tip of the iceberg. I want more! Great film, through and through. Although I would have loved the live footage with the live sound, and not the album overdubs. I suppose the focus was the album with the tracks themselves, as opposed to the creative processes and the songs, but still. Live performances would have added to the "tribute."
lp-Hey girly, girl! Are you misbehaving again? Happy birthday to your girls.
Gina-It seems I still owe you a tape of stuff. I promised you a Christmas version. Hope I can still do that even thought the season has ended. Missed you!
angel-More on MOA: Agreed about having their insight on their quest for "beyond perfection." I just can't imagine how those other guitarists felt about having their solos in this film, with the negative comments. I'm sure actually, they don't really care at this point. But D and W were respectful enough to not mention any names.
Nice to be home again. DaddyG sends good vibes to all. Musser, I think. (A little non-percussionist humor.)
Blaise -- the producers of Tribute the Movie are trying desparately to get a distribution deal for indie theaters across the country. That's a virtual pre-requisite for video release. Tribute the Movie will be screening in late Feb or early March at the Cinequest festival in San Jose, CA and in March at South by Southwest in Austin. http://www.tributethemovie.com (I hyperlinked this as "my URL" above)
SteeveeDan -- The OC show was totally out of control. As you know, the advertising for the show made no mention whatsoever of Which One's Pink? Nevertheless, when we arrived at 6:00 for load in, the ticket window had a sign saying "This Show Completely Sold Out" Wild Child, alone, basically filled the place. What was insane was that the crowd had NO IDEA that they were going to see a Pink Floyd tribute that night -- none. So when we came on and launched into our incredibly brief 45 min set, jaws were dropping all over the place -- they went nuts. We asked who had seen us before, and got a very sparse reaction. We asked who was seeing us for the first time and got a massive roar. No offense to the Doors, who I love, but Pink Floyd's music is just more powerful -- in part since Floyd has a heavy bass (and the Doors have none) and Floyd has more searing, power chordy guitar work. On the other hand, the Doors get the benefit of a dynamic, entertaining front man while we stand there like wooden indians. Therefore, by comparison, I think came off quite well and we garnered a large number of new e-mail addresses seeking to be on our e-mail list!
Tian, "Which One's Dan?" -- that would be me, Dan Johnson -- the world's only remaining Los Angeles Rams fan who refuses to acknowledge the existence of some purported entity called "The St. Louis Rams" I can't believe that Georgia is rumored to have gained access to ownership of the team by shady means involving Carol Rosenbloom, then refuses to pay great players like Fred Dryer and Eric Dickerson, allows the team to be intentionally torpedoed in order to claim that the Rams got "no support" in SoCal and get a sweetheart deal from STL and then gets to take advantage of a salary cap that forces a minimum payroll expenditure to become competitive and then wins the Super Bowl in '99 saying after the game as an insult to all of us who live and die with the team despite betrayal after betrayal "see this proves I did the right thing by moving the team" What a nightmare.

Clas,
Sorry. Yes, I have unfortunately forgotten my name again.
The friendly staff here at the institution have assured me
that this condition MAY only be temporary. If anyone out
there remembers who I am I would appreciate the input :)
Oh! One other thing...
Why do we care about the Palestinians again?
Dano: Ok, what does "wee" mean?
Nevermind
Yep, Peter Gabriel's new one should be out this year. Says so right on his website. And we think Steely Dan takes a long time in the studio...
Football? Isn't that the sport with the round white ball that people chase all over hell and gone?
StAl
I Forgot - did you forget your handle too? In case you don't know:
Sharon is leading the Apartheid-politics against the palestines.

Lisa G: Girlfriend! Alright! Glad you liked it. Boy was I gonna be upset if you didn't, after spending all that money. I do understand your thoughts on the rejects for Peg, but I think you have to have a thick skin when you work with the Becker/Fagen team. They even reject their own work. It does give us insight into what they were looking for, though.
Blaise: Interesting article, especially the fact that Cheney gave the order to down Flight 93, if needed. I thought it was Bush.
Ole: Nice work getting a trip to Tucson. :-)
LP: You deserved to give a Pat yell. They earned it.
Howdy X-Ray Woman :-) Lisa G. as Howard already said, you've been missed. This forum needs its scholared musical wizards discussing charts and D flats and Emaj7's and all that jazz :-)
Here a Manic Monday Anecdote:
The URL above is to Brian Bromberg's site.
Mr. Bromberg's part of Emiel van Egdom's musical journeys and i sent him the pictures taken in Maastricht and Belgium. He replied saying thanks for this visual update on the far away buddies and we came to talk via email.
Now i wasn't that familiar with his name nor the music, although many of the musicians BB has played and recorded with have passed my listening ears, but we all know how it goes, too much music, too many names, too little time!
Anyway, i was telling him this and how once upon a blue time i felt as low as possible and downhearted on life. Then i got to see the Fabulous Baker Boys movie and it turned the world around for me again. Every shred of passion for life and music i ever felt and the soul-numbing experiences which had me close the doors, the doors were unlocked, it all came back, just by watching that movie and hearing the music.
And guess what ... mr. Bromberg replied saying he was the bassist of the Fabulous Baker Boys Soundtrack!!!!!
Very very funny and so serendipituous this thing is, eh?
So the most courteous i could do, yesterday, was to say a belated thank you for that wake up call ... And therefore a Banyan Tree Bow in his honor today!
You gotto read the biography on his website, it's written so funny!
There are few moments in an adult's life beholding changes so deep and aware when at that time you feel stuck and imprisoned .. like when i found these Trees that Fab Baker Boys is one of those turnaround things .. New Dawnings, Awakenings .. And what are the odds we get to encounter those who were part of the positive changes ... so ...
Banyan Tree for Brian Bromberg Bow,
G.
Who is Sharon again?
LP - you're not a HyperFeminist? Are there such things as HYPERFeminists?
Either you're a Feminist or no.
Being a woman and not being a feminist, well, "Flying Blind" is the expression.
C, Feminist
PS/ Fuck Sharon
HA! never knew that other meaning of spunk - another male reference to mean "strength" as in, "wow, that took some serious balls" - i'm not a hyper-feminist actually; but i have found it intriguing that such male sexual exploits are used to mean positive attributes in someone, but yet we look at the word "hysterical" and well, you get my drift - i guess it will take a few more generations to clear up that linguistic mess, now won't it? that took some serious clit to type that, huh? - did you blush? see, these things take time i guess - LOL
back in my navy blue suit dear ward, not to worry [really big meeting tonight, won't be home dear, but i made you some stew] - i haven't gone to hell just yet in style - and yes (!), oleander will be a lovely addition to our trip- but do you, ole, drink martini's, we only pack the gin and vermouth, no vodka, hope that's okay...
angel - i rarely get all wacky about football, but after listening all last week to the national sports press and the pittsburg team/fans barely mentioning the game with the pat's and only referring to new orleans for the steelers, i felt they aptly deserved a kick in the patooty (did i just type that word?) - their fans actually had already made reservations for new orleans BEFORE saturday!!!!! - i usually keep the game(s) on as background noise on the weekends but this one i was riveted during [whilst addressing birthday invitations for both my daughter's separate birthday parties coming up in February, of course, hehehe, june lives baby, right gina?] - wow, what a game, i love that stuff!
i purchased the new john mayer cd as a necessary treat for myself, haven't given a listen yet, but will post thoughts - anyone else given this young man a try? i also got that industrial band that did "put the body in motion/start a commotion" thingy that was a mitsubushi commercial (for my 8 year old, please) and it's not bad for blasting out the car window on a sunny day, but don't tell anyone, you'll ruin my rep (smirk)...
lisa g, so glad to see you back - uptown baby!
Oleander: "Aus--I am extremely concerned about you [Ward & June] taking this perilous trip. You MUST take along a physician skilled in dealing with arthropod envenomation and ciguatera poisoning, at the very least. Please don't waste a moment --e me ticket & itinerary."
My lord Ole! How could I have been so reckless??! I'm E-blasting your E-tickets (first class, of course)as well as the itinerary right away...I only pray dear June doesn't mind sharing the cabanya with you once we all fly to St. Barth's....should I also be worried about beri-beri? What about other indigenous diseases??!! Now you've unwittingly stirred the closet microphobe in me....advise asap sil vouz plait..
Ward
Welcome back Lisa G! Great to hear from you again - you've been missed.
Is that "making of Aja" feature a gem or is it a gem?!? So glad you're enjoying it.
So many highlights... nice insights into the differing personalities of the musicians too. If only they hadn't lost the damn multi-track master tapes from Aja and Black Cow though. Would just love to get some of the track-by-track breakdown on these songs. Oh well, shouldn't complain - there's so much other great material.
Howard

For those so inclined, of course.
Is it Timberlake or Logsplash?
Btw, notice both rallying drives ended with a pick. Patience, 2 minutes is a long time. Coulda run the damned thing a few times there, mix it up, no?
Jay Graydon, to my knowledge, never played on another SD track.
And there, in a nutshell, is my limited contribution.

By the way, which one is Dan??

Think I have the answer to question #1...."Peg" pegged out at #11...
that, according to some old records of mine...I would have been
at a country format station (!) at that time....lessee....the rest
of the questions...better leave those to some other experts on this
GB...any easy questions? like who played Wally on Leave It To Beaver?
HEY!!!!!!!!
How's everybody? Damn, I miss you guys. Been away too long. This is my first official post in the new format. And I must say it's strange. Guess old habits die hard.
Just had to burst in and tell angel--GUESS WHAT I JUST WATCHED ON MY NEW DVD PLAYER?
Uptown, baby. Finally to see Fagen's eyes, up close and personal without those damn shades. To hear just the background vocals to "Peg." (Who knew about the acoustic guitar part?) To hear and see those guys, all of 'em and the tracks all bare and stuff. Rainey was gentlemanly; Carlton, respectful; Herington, a pleasure to hear; and overall the anecdotes were worth the price of admission. And much was admitted. My only complaint was with the "Peg" solos segment. Playing the tidbits of the guitar solos that didn't make it was kinda in poor taste, IMO.
I've got to give it a few thousand more whirls. But quite frankly, I found it the best thing I've seen since Calle 54.
"Don't wear your heart on your sleeve." Hmm...good advice.
I’ll try to check in again soon. Right now, it’s time for bed. Early morning and two concerts tomorrow.
Nice to be back.
Lisa G
steviedan--Victor Wooten et freres (sans FutureMan) were here at a small club last night (cara, where we went to see Jonatha Brooke), but by the time I strolled up it was sold out, dammit--the place was beseiged by dreaded Fleckies. Now of course R& B was/ is the best, but are there any current cartoons you like? Freakazoid, Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack?
BigFan--Glad you're back. Wonder if the Sporting News guy knows our bud kd?
Aus--I am extremely concerned about you [Ward & June] taking this perilous trip. You MUST take along a physician skilled in dealing with arthropod envenomation and ciguatera poisoning, at the very least. Please don't waste a moment --e me ticket & itinerary.
Dr. Kruger--man, you better get your cerumen disimpacted and wipe the spunk off your glasses--that $3.80 is what the check is written for, and can only be cashed if you answer the damn question!
Paul--Very funny article. Wish I could come get a snifty at the DSO.
LP: Could you restrain yourself? Congratulations! (Not like you did anything, but what the heck.) :-)
Dr. Warren K: I did what? Must have signed that check in my sleep. :-)
Big Fan: Hey, good to see you. Thanks for the links, as always.
W1P: Did you get that riot going? I wanted to be there so bad. :-(
Raining today. Nice day to just stay at home. Off tomorrow, wahoo!

nice web page
First of all, I'd like to thank the many Steeley Dan fans for the generous contributions they have made to the Rehab Arthur Lee Fund. I knew you people were easy marks- I mean, very quick with the buck, as far as rock and/or roll trivia is concerned.
That backwoods "voodoo queen" Oleander, was very generous for someone coming from that type of socio-economic background, although I was puzzled by the $3.80 remark.
Angel also showed that her wallet was as big as her uh heart- happy birthday from Dr.K. BTW.
The 2 Stev-ie-ee-dans came thru splendidly, although I could've used cash instead of comps for the tribute band thing. I'm sure I won't have any trouble scalping them in Sherman Oaks.
I've still yet to hear from some of our overseas friends, but I'm sure that's due to some mail strike those backwoods-I mean backwards countries are always going thru.
However, the rehab is not going so well. Indeed, it is almost as difficult to rehab a psycho rock and/or roll legend as it is to convince a 130lb. otterhound that he is not the Alpha-dog of the household.
So I guess it's necessary to reveal some more rock and/or roll esoterica that the good doctor has picked up from his once thriving practice.
From the Beatles' White Album- the song "Dear Prudence" was about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence's bout with agoraphobia whilst learning the secrets of the soul from that swingin' old Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India.
So don't thank me, just send me some more money, Arthur Lee has not made a smooth transition to life on the outside. The plastic tubing, the timed-release deludin, the EST equipment- that's all very expensive stuff!
As another one of my rock and/or roll patients said before that unfortunate accident I had with his eyesight- "Don't delay, send yours in right a-way!
Nouveau Richely Yours,
Dr. Warren K.
LuckLess Pedestrian: Dearest June....in a recent salvo on these very pages you wrote: "but sad to say to ward, june does not have pearls and heels on doing this, an old eddie bauer sweatshirt and kahki's (sp)"
Now I'm really starting to worry my little shnook-shnook. Prescription to be administered ASAP: A WEEK of beauty, massages and relaxation at Canyon Ranch Spa in Tucson, Arizona....thereafter whisked away to St. Barth, West French Indies for another week of sun, sand, surf and wild passionate sex. Hang in there love....help is on its way...I'll be there as fast as I can.
Love.....Ward.
ps. Khakis.
GINA........Sorry about the tornado leftovers coming your way.....must be something to do with all this commonality in Europe now.....the €, EEC etc etc....it seems we must have standardised weather too!!!! Don't forget you're on The DSO guest list any time!
Also I didn't know what the reference to GB was.......now I understand...sorry for cluttering up the pages with our listings!!
One point always amuses me: the use of the word "Spunk" in your last posting and used throughout American writing.....Don't you guys know what it means over in the UK? SEMEN!!!!!! I used to cringe with embarassment when the word would get used on tv in front of my parents....red faces all round...nothing said....all understood though! Still can't ever see us using the expression over here! Same with Fanny...it ain't the BACK side!
Oh the joys of linguistic mangling!
I HAD to bring this one back....now that you're all using Monopoly Money over there....Rule Britannia......as always...last in the pool....AND we keep our pants on just in case!!!
The New Euro Language "VAT DER FOK"
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English
will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the
other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government
conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has
accepted a 5 year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will
make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in
favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have
1 less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond
year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will
make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted
to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the
horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the language is disgraseful, and they
should go away. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such
as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze
unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar
changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no
mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech

STEVEEDAN......thanks for all the warm greetings..feels real good to have a whole new branch of the family Stateside.

Gina - you're excused. But what is this shit, have you left Your Dog with your parents? Hmmm...
Scotch - what "palace" means in Dallas? Well, if you ask me; it rhymes with Dallas. That's all there is to it.

LOL LOL LOL
I seem to be stuck in yellow today ... had a little wingding with Gaucho who's keeping my parents from depression and illness, i miss that little muffin but he's in my heart and now my folks are young again and have fun playing soccer with a tennisball, Gaucho the Pele or Johan Cruijff, yes, why not throw in another one of those dutch wizards, eh?
Steveedan ... because i put it there with my own hands LOL
Nice to have access to Beasley's server and website, imagine, all those miles and water in between locations ... must give some credit to "Eg Man" Emiel van Egdom too since he's the one holding the reigns and the access in his Mac-kingdom, haha! Speaking of E. he's got plans to fly back to the States and work on projects with Tom McCauley who's also connected to bassist Brian Bromberg ... for a dutchman not bad, given the fact here in the Netherlands all he's experienced ever since his first band CULEA was jealousy and mayhem. I remember how folks reacted when they found out he recorded an album in the Chick Corea studios ... And recently, when he played here in Maastricht, i saw and heard people first get excited because of the music, then suddenly a negative swirl took over and they slammed him for working in the States ... When he was granted a scholarship for Berklee the same things happened ... Funny how people can't stand someone they "know", from their own neighbourhood to receive acknowledgment for his gift and talents ... And not because of connections or a network, but because of his talent! And he had to work hard as well in the States.
The conservatories here don't teach the way Berklee does for example .. Twenty years ago, when E. was a student there they knew computers would be the tools musicians had to use in the future .. Finale, Pro Tools etc etc.
A lot is more professional in the US.
DF and WB might take to the socio-economic structure of western Europe, at least back then in the seventies ... when it comes to music your country can't be surpassed in mastership, masterhood?!
Timberlakey B, okay, you want that name???
Clas, you're also a man of hidden treasures, all that knowledge stuffed in you, no wonder the Sternum Ache tries to get a hold of you sometimes ...
Somehow it seems to come with the territory ... but you have a rich life, rich awareness floating in you, ain't that what life's about, really ..
Gosh, from sentimental to goofy i go, may i be excused?
Banyan Tree Flower Power Peace Bow,
G.
Blaise - yes, bootlegger, in a hard competition with our Swampman. No, in fact, I won it here, on this very GBook, I could connect the names to the faces on a pic from the very first Steely Dan Fest ever. "St Louis, SEEE YOU NEXT YEEEER" was the First Prize.
---
Scott, is it Scott? As the whiskey? - Jay Graydon and David Foster (piano) have composed and produced a lot of stuff during the years. Al Jarreau, you know tha Sticky Whicket or whatever the album was called.
They also had a band called "Airplay" (I think).
They also wrote the mega hit "After the Love is gone". I saw Graydon with band (Bill Champlin, Porcaro, that Toto singer etc etc) a couple of times here in Stockholm. They were damn good live. But Graydons Albums are so fucked up with machines, no fun.
But he's still Big in Japan.
---
Howard - clavinet? I always thought that was a muted guitar. But you're right.
Have to check the chords again. I got the chords from Steely Dan Complete, the one who ends with Gaucho. There's a lot of stuff in that book that's wrong. I have been playing along with "Night by Night", "Any Major Dude" and "Barrytown" now for several days, it's so good, I just love that Steely Dan period.

Hi Cyn, Gina, LP and HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGEL!
C
PS/ By the way: FUCK SHARON!
Please notice new eamil. Cable modem is the way to go. I also set up a wireless network in our house to our son's computer - one floor down and about 40 ft away at the the other end of the house. Some things they don't tell you. 1500 ft is measured with a female carpenter's ruler. Metal doors, brick chimneys and even the metal box of your computer completely block the signal. In fact your body does a pretty good job too. New cell phones work on the same frequency. You must point both antennas at each other
OK Steely Dan stuff.
I miss Excite - I always used their news search to find out current info on the band. Geeez rumours of the next one. Thank God Hoops added my new email address to his list promptly. Such secrecy.

Yes stevie dan, I saw that video recounting a typical Elton John backstage scene circa 72. And there's Pee Wee Herman going ballistic on a fan there. Ha! Didn't recognize the Timberlake (Is that like. a real name? What a cool name! I want that name!) character though. Guess that spoils it for me.
Best video these days: Canadian outfit (hehe) Barenaked Ladies use all their old videos into this one retrospective, making it seem like they were lip-synching this new song. And it works. The illusion is real. Amazing technical stuff.
Runner up: That Fatboy Slim dittie with Christopher Walken dancing and jumping all over the place, mostly improv. Inspired. There are still people up to the task of pushing the video envelope out there.
Can't believe I'm talking about music videos. For the record, stevie dan started it. Blame him.
Yes, October sounds good to me. It does for now.
And Peter Gabriel in 05, providing there still is a viable music industry.
Gina - No.
And nice pages documenting the current jazz scene in Holland. Must-see. Beasley playing Santa, priceless.
Pink - Will this tribute movie make it out on video anytime soon? Looks like a lot of fun.
Hi Scott - your questions in post #1710 are intriguing to be sure. I hope that someone here has some of the answers for you, and the rest of us.
Hi Steviedan - always interesting to read your posts.
Belated Happy Birthday Angel - and many happy returns. Please send my regards to husband and J for me.
W1P - here am I, bummed again, had to handle nursing duty for my sick little guy. I hope you guys showed the folks in Orange County at the Anaheim House Of Blues that Which One's Pink can fill any house any time just like you did at the more famous and chic Hollywood House Of Blues. So sorry I could not be on hand.
To fellow keyboardist extrordinare Paul Shotan - your tour schedule is huge! How do you find the time to do anything else? You have another epic return e-mail from me. Let the questions, answers and shop-talk begin.
Congratulations to the Swedish tennis fans. Johansson beats Safin in the finals of the Australian Open.
Gina - a question for you ... how did my quote get onto the Beasley site? Not that I am complaining ...
I am working on a new chart for "Do It Again". I am re-creating one of the live versions with the re-worked chords and that killer rhythm jam at the conclusion of the song. This one might be proprietary, but maybe not, we'll see ...
The wife is up ... she caught me staying up way too late AGAIN on the computer. Off to bed (it sure beats the couch - ouch !!)

hey all-
just a few questions:
1) How high did "Peg" chart?
2) Did Jay Graydon play any other solos besides "Peg"? What else has he done outside of Steely Dan?
3) What has Denny Dias done outside of the Dan?
4) Who played the solo on "Everything You Did"? How about "Rose Darlin"?
5) What/where is "the palace" referred to in the song "Dallas"?
6) Why was "Bodhisattva" never released as a single?!!! Was it at least a B-side? I know the live version was...
7) In the Sweet book, he mentions that Don and/or Walt made a few comments about YES during an interview in the 70s. Anyone know what was said?
Thanks in advance for any answers to these!
Aloha Paul, here across the North Sea small pond in the Netherlands we suffer the leftovers of your Tornado, it's around the yellow bricks of the house i live in and against the windows. Very funny i live in a YELLOW house and my zipcode includes GB ... how's that for wacky coincidence, how can i forget about these pages ever this way??????
I saw that, i've been roaming around the Danny Steel pages a few months ago. I remember enthused people and now you post this long long impressive list here .. Dano, think of it, continious muellering&Danmusic, how's about that! :-)
LP, it was fun talking to you yesterday ... i so admire your spunk to do it all, a fulltime job, kids, household, husband, social life, cooking dinners, music and online fun .. and it's safe to say Blaise kind of is taken and charmed by your skateboarded&Ramones days, you're just as strange as most of the Steely adepts around here and elsewhere, hahaha. Strange in a way you would be wrapped in all kinds of labels if you let people stick 'em on you, throughout the years. Pogo and catching dogs in Boston ...
The prerogative of individuality, right? And so in the SD groove!!
Have a great Sunday :-)
Blaise, you don't mind me sharing this, do you? It's the sweet thing being part of a forum, over time you get to know some of the folks here, the little things painting vivid pictures and all ... Sunday morning and sentimental moods hit me, the wonders of internet communication!

"close your eyes and you'll be there, it's everything they say"
hey angel - hope you had a good day
to the UK mates and those interested in cooking - have a chastleton pot roast in the simmering oven in the old AGA now - substitutin mushrooms for celery and rutebega (sp) for parsnip - everything is measured in weight in my AGA/UK cookbook, us rebels over the pond are so clueless at such things
when i was in college (82-86), my friend studying at julliard (bass - jazz/fusion) heard wb/df were "in studio" and a "new one" was due out soon and i completely bought into it, only to be disappointed later - i think he really told me that as a come-on line that i believe at the time worked and disappointment likely did NOT follow - lol, silly youth, i suppose
dano - much obliged you posting the dictionary thingy below - yes, Rob is ready for some muellering tomorrow afternoon at kick-off - pittsburg fans have mentally skipped over the game and all they talk about is new orleans, like this game tomorrow doesn't even exist - hopefully the players will have a similar attitude and we surprise them, hehehehehe, hey i can dream
aus - how are you dear? june misses you horribly (see below, she has sunk so terribly low)
gina - on my 4th load of laundry, mae is at basketball, theresa down for a nap (in underwear, yipes, did i mention she is training herself - just went cold turkey on monday on her own by request, who knew), have a cooking show on (why are they all based in california, no offense to the left coast, but come on!) as i do my pick-up - but sad to say to ward, june does not have pearls and heels on doing this, an old eddie bauer sweatshirt and kahki's (sp) - anyways thanks for the chat earlier
oleander, hey, how did you know? lol - that was at the outdoor concert at the modern art museum in lincoln, mass (hey nmn, you there buddy?)
tones, you lurkin?
ken starr, go get em, man - this will be an original USA Network movie next year for sure - but now it really is so sad, the latest death really hit me
happy saturday - GO PAT's!!!!! (there is a hilarious parody of the brady bunch theme around our quarterback, tom brady, that is on the radio now - too funny!)
Ange - Thirty years ago, we could first afford a thrill, for example... 'twas sometime in the fall of '72, October to be more precise.
That would coincide with... the Choir Olympics in Busan, Korea.
Yeah... makes sense. ;-)
ß
OMG! Dano, I actually understood your message. "Give you a call on the phone". Sorry you have the inlaws over, but your wife will owe you big time after it is all over. :-)
Blaise: How nice of you to say that. I fully expected you to tell me I am old again. (Remember the recent parody.)
Significant dates in '02.... 02/02/02, 02/22/02 (too early)
20/11/02 aka 11/20/02 (palendrome done european style, my husband's idea). That one would work, because it will release just before the Holiday season.
For next year. 01/02/03 (unfortunately, right after the Holiday season, but look at 2VN's release date).
Gina: Do you have the '93 recording when Donald goes, Sorry...oooh, angel.
That is my favorite. :-)
Angel Happy Birthday , I"m holed up with the outlaws give me a bell on the old Dog And Bone and rescue me Please!!
If not have a dooser of a night wee lassie??
St Al,

Going to the (Battle Cruiser) Boozer for a wee Swallie (Few Buds).
Have a wee Snifty (LOOK)at the form of that horse called Steely Dan.
PG , Album this year ??Is that right Pat??
Yeah, and Peter Gabriel's new one will be out this year too!
Actually, this statement is probably true. However, I started hearing similar statements about PG's yet-to-be-released album (called "Up") about 4 years ago...
Not to rain on anyone's parade but whenever I read these things I give 'em the serious hairy eyeball..
My money is still on 2003
StAl
Slated? As in scheduled. programmed, timetabled, agendaed?
Now that's a dooser, mates. When we leggin' it??
Remember ole, the release date for Two against Nature had this "significance". It was a leap year date and a special one at that. Is there such a significant date coming up this year?
We have to rule out angel's birthday now, since it's passed, even if it was the most significant date I could think of. ;-) I was told angels did not age and this is the closest I've come to the real thing so I never expected a "birthday" to come around.
"Where is Tones , has he legged it oot the toon or what??"
"leggin' it out the toon", meaning leaving whatever this here is, my all-time fave. I couldn't have put it better, wee mate.
Clas. a bootlegger? OMG...
Help!!!
Need to purchase an old piece of kit...
But from where?

Mu, my boy. Your instincts are noteworthy but your facts are, shall we say Bankrupt? Perhaps Judge Rosenthal had reasons to let the Enron boys go. Afterall, the attorneys are her friends.
http://www.newsday.com/business/nationworld/sns-enron-probe-ct.story
excerpt:
"In Houston federal court, the judge hearing 45 lawsuits filed over Enron's implosion has notified attorneys she would withdraw. In a court filing, U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal cited acquaintanceships with two of the defense lawyers involved. One, she wrote, is her child's godfather, and the other was best man at her wedding. In a 2000 financial disclosure, Rosenthal stated that she owned Enron stock, according to Texas Lawyer magazine. Rosenthal did not return phone calls Monday."
But what troubles me the most is your assertion that Sen. Lieberman has taken in $250K of Enron graft. From the same story the following excerpt;
"The company was a generous contributor to campaigns in both parties, giving 71 senators a total of $530,000 and 188 House members a total of $603,000 between 1989 and 2001, according to a Center for Responsive Politics tally.....
In the Senate, top Enron recipients who also sit on the Governmental Affairs Committee, which is examining the company, include Sens. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., with $12,000 in contributions from Enron, and Robert Bennett, R-Utah, with $8,053 from the energy trading giant.
Other committee members who had received Enron donations include: Chairman Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., $2,000 (in 1993-94); Sens. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., $3,000; Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, $3,000; Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., $1,000; and Jim Bunning, R-Ky., $769. Sen. Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., received $1,000 last June but returned it six days later.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who is not on the panel, received $99,500 from Enron in the same period."
Looks like the R's got most and the biggest contributions but that's no surprise is it?. Lieberman got his when Enron was actually earning their reputation. Your faulty information is surprising. See you in court....
Ole: Isn't that just too cool. I spent my lunch hour looking at old Steely Dan Home pages, to see if it looks like it might be getting close.
By comparing what is currently on the homepage, to what went on for the last one. The best I could come up with was, probably not very. I think the 2003 thing might be it, but I still have my hopes on a fall '02 release with a tour during this summer, if they can get enough in the can. How about just a few dates, just to keep fresh. :-)
Thanks so much for all the Birthday wishes. My favorite was an e-greeting from Snakehips, that had an angel playing a song on a piano. It was just too cool. Ended up with pizza and beer for dinner. No Cuervo Gold at that restaurant. Lots of cards and a few gifts. Almost worth seeing another year go by.
Gina: I did check out the Beasley pics. The back stage one's were obviously the better shots. Regarding Michael McDonald. As my Steely work friend said, Michael gets around. His voice is so distinctive, too. So he never gets lost in a crowd.
W1P: Inciting to riot is a federal offense. :-)
You're my a yeah ang L, come and see me tonight
Re: #1692 -- Ms. Oleander, my friend, you have made my day. I'm just so overcome with emotion ... I know there's no full moon tonight, but I feel a Howl of Excitement coming on ...

P.S. Heya Ed! I know you're out there ...
P.P.S. Happy happy birthday Angel!
HEYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get over to the BlueBook and check out Ed's post--it's a stoater--or let me give you the bottom line:
"In addition to the yet-to-be-named Steely Dan CD slated for a 2002 release, Scheiner is currently in the studio with Natalie Cole, and recently produced the audio segments of the Country Music Awards (CMA)."
Are you ready for The Next Betting Pool???
Angel, consider that a birthday present, if an inadvertent one! Hoist a few for me, & happy birthday.
B(l)aiser rouge--You free? I got your ticket right here.
lp--sounds great. Now I'm getting stoked. And picturing you in beads & tie-dye swaying whitely to "Take Five."
Fr Wm--Great story. Any news on an eastern swing?
Danooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
ANGEL - Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any Colour You Like? The two most common questions we get (other than "when are you going to play Echoes again?") are (1) when are you playing an 18 and over show? and (2) when are you playing Orange County? Well, Which One's Pink? -- Southern California's Pink Floyd tribute band -- answers both of these questions Saturday night, January 26, 2002 at 9:00 p.m. sharp when we make our debut at the House of Blues® Anaheim, 1530 S. Disneyland Dr. (714.778.BLUE). Which One's Pink? will be opening for one of the most famous tribute bands in the world -- Wild Child, the excellent Doors tribute featuring Dave Brock channeling Jim Morrison. The House of Blues has questioned our ability to draw a crowd in Orange County -- so please come out and help us prove that we are worthy. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and Dylan tribute Highway 61 revisited goes on at 8:00 p.m. http://www.whichonespink.com -- Sign On You Crazy Diamond!

As you might have suspected, Don and Walt are still
hard at work on the new CD...

2. Swallie: A potent potable
3. Snifie: A line of blow.
Everybody: Have a great weekend!

Dano: Define please...
1. Stoater

Bad Sneakers , What about Bertie and his first game ??That was a stoater!!
I was in Spain and France for two world cups , but we need to start getting new blood soon or else we will be stuck with Dodds , Booth etc etc.
Are you in for a swallie at a Danny Steel night??
1681: Beverly Hills so nice, had a sojourn there some years ago, borrowed a house on Oakhurst Drive for a good couple of weeks. BTW have they got a Becker and Fagen menu at Larry Parker's yet ?
Couple of great LA moments: Dancing with two superbly-looking twin blondes with upgraded front parts in top floor of Roxy's; asking for the Let Me Ride video by Dre at Parker's and this black waitress retorting "Hey, you can let me ride, Honey.. " (whilst making some funky moves with her hips); ashes from Laguna Beach landing on the gold-metallic Mercedes
in the drive way; Fabio dining at a window table somewhere on so. Beverly Dr.
"Here come those Santa Ana winds again..."
Oh well..
regards,
Dirk
Ps. Fabio - where's he now ?
I had a couple of typo again. Sorry Clas, but you see, I AM lazy.

Hello Mr. Chow - It's nice to get a message from you. I remember when you had come through Los Angeles a few months ago, and were trying to get a hold of JW. If all goes well (because 2/3 of my family are coming down with colds which might make nursing duty for me mandatory), I have plans to get together with JayDubs this Sunday. So, I think it would be a great plan to have the three of us get together - purhaps at Mr. Chow's on Camden Drive in Beverly Hills, so that we can eat at "your" restaurant, and reminisce about the good old "glamour profession" days.
Anyone else who would like to join in the (no-to-illegal) fun, you are welcome. Mr. Chow is a fantastic restaurant with top-notch cuisine. A little pricey, but it is great.
I would also like to say hello to the growing UK contingent of posters here on the GB - Danooooooooo, Dunk, and of course, to my new keyboard buddy, Paul S.
To all the rest, have a nice weekend. (And pray the little girls still throw roses.)

I will have $20 Bucks on a win double.
Talking of betting Steely Dan runs tomorrow at Lingfield in the 3.10 if any Brits fancy a bet ?? It has a good chance and if it gets beat, I will be on the Dog And Bone to Walter And Don for a Refund??
Duncan , TWM , Paul S , what about a Steely get together at one of your gigs?? Nobody is getting keen or what ??
Dragon , how are things in Florida??Did you have that mini Dan Fest yourself??
Has anyone over the water heard anything about "Gangs Of New York" by Scorsese , and NYPD Blue . Two of the most eagerly awaiting events in the world and I dont know what the scoop is ?? Anyone any clues??
Where is Tones , has he legged it oot the toon or what??

Aloha Ange .. as soon as that Lighthouse Browser filled my screen with the GB, i read your post and the words Michael McDonald .. guess who i am listening to right now, his Blue Obsession .....don't you just love these threads that keep on coming where you least expect ...?
Yep LP, loud & clear, thank you :-)
Does this mean i can now get any leftover from one of your extensive dinners your infamous for by now lol ...
B, you're a dead giveway each time you post, nah, you're writing style does the trick if ever there is one, you edgeful canuck :-)
Dano, Al, Tones, Steviedan, you all muellered????
Banyan Tree Have a Nice Weekend Bow,
G.
David: Well, that explains why I could not get in touch with you. Obviously, it was not to be. I am glad you had a good time.
I was listening to 2 Against Nature yesterday, I realized that it is even more layered then any other Steely Dan album. I am not the best a figuring out instruments, etc, but I was trying to work on Almost Gothic and all these wonderful sounds are coming at me. I have no idea how they did it and with what instruments. The liner notes tell part of the story, but not everything. I think I will leave it at sonic nirvana and move on.... (Help me, Mu)
For my birthday I asked for Ambrosia, Life Beyond LA. I got tired of listening to the album in 30 second snippets on Amazon.com. Since my husband is online ordering challenged, we went shopping for it. It ended up that they did not have it at the stores we visited, so I compromised and got their Anthology. It had 4 of the cuts I wanted, and a bunch more stuff. As I was listening to the cuts I had never heard before, I can hear Michael McDonald singing. So I grab the liner notes and find out that both he and Royce Jones were memebers of the group in the late 70's and early 80's. As they said in the notes, Steely Dan alumni.
Favorite line from Life Beyond LA - "Livin' out here you soon come to know that it ain't how good you are as much as who you know and how you fake it". I hear similar words quite often at my workplace. :-)
To put this birthday of mine in perspective, I was probably around 22 when Donald and Walter wrote "Hey 19". That makes me feel a bit better. Maybe I will break out some Cuervo Gold tonight, in their honor. :-)
ole - brubeck indeed tells great stories, they are a wonderful addition to his set - especially about his travels: at a show in 1987 in Lowell, Mass he spoke of his trip to japan before commencing 'kyoto song' it brought tears listening to that tune after you heard his impressions - please post your review after you go - now i'm bummin that i didn't get tickets to next month's show at harvard again, hmph! my husband and i have almost a dead-like approach to seeing him in concert, we are at about a dozen now, lol
on grunge - i went through a period where i was into it then got burnt out by the noise and sometimes a little too much angst/anger, but now with post-grunge soundgarden, creed and others, i seem to be pulled back in, it fits my mood of late:
standing with my enemies
hung on my horns
with haste and reverie
killing with charm
rhinosaur - soundgarden
gina - did you get my message?
ge - great comparison, and i did send it along to people, thanks!
sh - have a nutty day ahead of me, will write more this weekend or next week, sorry for my terseness
angel - what's new?
Yep. But StAl, isn't it our jobs as citizens of the free world to help find these evildoers? You now did your part by telling us his real name and how he acted rather suspiciously in your presence once in a Seattle bar. Good work.
Let's round 'em up!
Nah... I was just illustrating the fact that it's a tough job since we could lineup a thousand guys who'd fit this particular profile, given we'd strap a towel on their heads, of course.
That Ashcroft dude comes across as a real tough bitch, btw, very anal. Move ober Janet Reno.
Overheard Mu singing:
"I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break, mon
I'm gonna break that musky case:
Enron"
Get that one, StAl? My fave.
Recipe for Soundgarden-style Soufflé: You take a little Sabbath circa Dio, lose Satan there, keep that vague existential angst, expound on the fuzz box-driven hooks, solidify that heavy bottom a little et voila!
I like it. It's a kind of throwback to 70's glam rock, like a little synthesis of it all. And since people were left jonesin' throughout the eighties for it, when it came back, in the form of grunge or the "Seattle Sound", it all felt like a breath of fresh air, if well done. It certainly was the case here.
I like new bands if they take me back to my youth like that, sure. Just like little Gwen doing Love to Love You Baby, btw. Donna Summer's steamy sounds of love were more convincing though. She wasn't faking it back then. Nowadays, everything must hide behind this insincere facade, darn.
But I disgress...
Yes Howard and that tasteful use of the wah pedal throughout is interesting too. Who dunnit yet?
ole - I hear you're mad about Brubeck...
Ugh... I know, it's lame. I'll shut up now.
JJJJJJeff- It is my duty to warn you. Nova Scotia might tumble into the sea first. Or so I've heard anyway. Something about fast rising tides...
ß
jjeff - The Congolese Band were performing on the SLOPES of Table Mountain, not on top, although that would also be possible. They performed in Kirstenbosch, the most beautiful botanical garden in the world(no, I'm not biased!). Didn't want you getting the wrong idea now.
jjeff (1602) - Thanks for your thoughts. I certainly enjoy the alternate versions as well.
Paul Shotan (1638)- I couldn't agree with you more! That blood and sweat was worth bottling - the results are invaluable.
Steveedan - I didn't realise you were in SoCal. Next time I'm over I'll give you advance warning.
JDubz - Still need that contact number for next time!
Cheers.
Mr Chow
Ole: I wasn't referring to your post but to some misguided childs post. I've seen the Brubeck Quartet three times, all in the '60s when it included Paul Desmond. Two of the performances were free, one at the University of Nebraska and one at Nicholls State in La. The non-free one was the Friday night that I first arrived in Dallas after leaving L.S.U. to work for Collins Radio Company. I went to the performance site and was told that it was sold out, even the cheapest seats which was all I could afford ($2) but then they released a block of VIP seats, front row center, I got my pick of one of those. He was supposed to appear here in Boulder about five years ago but the performance, a sell out, was cancelled. That's when I learned that TicketBastard will refund ticket price but not their exorbidant handling charge.
Aus--Thanx for the reassurance re Dave Brubeck. Look, I love the guy, and badly want to see him once, anyway; this friend's comments really bummed me out. Sure, he may have had an off night, and actually, I probably wouldn't even mind spending the evening just listening to him tell stories. So I got my tickets, and we'll see.
Fr Wm--Please note that in my post I said NOTHING about retirement, quitting, age, etc. I hope to keel over into my grave busy.
Mu--But what you were saying wasn't clear to me, even in context. You were just being Socratic, no? I am even more convinced that we were separated at birth--good thing, after nine months of arguing.
Howard, Clas ... just LOVE your sign language, i have a chromatic scales watch these days :-)
well, no article yet on Beaz, a few more weeks so i have some more info on his work for Tommy LiPuma .. BUT i have a few photo albums, check the URL above ... Zan Gardner also in it, the singer who had lunch with Bernard Purdie, mentioned by Floridave if i recall right when fastscroll reading here ...
pictures of americans in Europe and europeans who footprinted across the big ponds etc etc. and funny enough, we all live in the same neighbourhoods sort of ... life's just great, right?
Banyan Tree Picture Trailed Bow,

Another heavy snowfall warning tonight for most of N.S., but the coast(me) usually gets just slush.
1617-Blaise: One of the great ironies of organized religions. The richest institutions on earth whose purpose basically is to help people. Don't get me started.
1622-Paul: The Congolese Band sound like a good time, and ON Table Mountain? The only shots I've seen of it are of a road running around the edge overlooking Capetown, no? Must have been a beautiful sight. And "there's joy in repetition".
1657-Mu: Clas had me fooled. Thanks for making me double-take.
Clas: If Zevon and Browne could trade voices and lyrics, they'd both be better men. I've seen Zevon on Letterman doing Rasberry Beret. That was great!
I'm hoping for a mother of a storm. I'm one of those people who say,"Bring it on, Mother Nature. Test me( as long as the power doesn't go out)!!!"
MC must be on heavy rotation. Hibernating?
hey dirk - in the town i work in, we have an insurance agency called "lewis and clark insurance" - a little american history joke there.....
Hi all. Just discovered yesterday that a Walter Becker runs an insurance agency in the Northern part of Norway, alongside another Becker (Roger Becker) - probably his brother, son or father.
Would be great for a Dan fan to have the insurance papers signed by Walter Becker ? *S*
Regards,
Erik - writing from Norway
My computer can beat up your computer! nyah-nyah!!!
Tell me, is this what's happened to cyber-society?
I wonder what's going on at the Soundgarden site - smirk...
Lets see now Chips...,
You are running MS Internet Explorer 4.01 under Windows98.
I am running MS Internet Explorer 6.0 under Windows XP.
Who is the REAL riff-raff here?
I rest my case...
:)
Ha, yes, riff-raff-r-US
I walked into that one very directly, now didn't I? It was too easy for you, really now, think big with your challenges......
As if my posts take up any space in here, and my flames are far more generalized than others.
And my posts are very predictable, unlike Sybil - LOLOLOL
but in the case of Chips here it does'nt appear to
be working does it?
I thought this new format was supposed to keep out the riff-raff...
:) <-----how this?

On the way to the concert, St. Al assured Walter that
they would probably make it on time...
img src="http://www.hotrodder.com/NMRA/smokin.jpg"
St Al, not too many, but you can count me in. I have a friend (who is sitting in with W1P this Saturday) who has a band called Numira and was in a band called Choking Ghost. He's a Berklee grad and his vocals are very Cornellish. There's a link to his site on the which one's pink? site if you want to hear what I'm talking about. Signed, Temple of the Dog
1612-1616: Clas, who says you can't have fun talking to yourself??! Very funny...
Ken Starr: Get off the yer Malibu beachfront and look into
Judge Lee H. Rosenthal! Her office can be reached @ (713) 250-5517.
On January 9th, US District Court Judge Lee Rosenthal refused to freeze the profints of Enron officers despite her own citing of a 1999 Supreme Court precedent (source: Houston Chronicle). She declined to put a restraining order on the acounts of 29 Enron executives and board members in a lawsuit filed on the behalf of a number of worker retirement funds (401K holders). Her excuse was that she sound no evidendence that "...any defendant has, or is likely to conceal the stock sales proceeds or profits, or place the beyond reach..." In other words, no one to her knowledge has purchased a fucking ONE-WAY ticket to RIO yet!!!!!!
Typical Washington politics - while the fox (Joe Lieberman in charge of the investigation with his $250,000 contributions from Enron and staff heaviily involved with the company) guards the hen house (fer chrissakes even Ashcroft recused himself for $60,000), the real bad guy are still rolling in dough and Lexii (plural for Lexus?) and Steely Dan t-shirts!
BAN ALL SOFT MONEY FROM COMPANIES AND PACs AND UNIONS NOW
Many retirees have gone from a comfortable cache of capital (1/2 million and up) to like $5000-30,000 total capital - just try living off that interest at 2%...
Dave -- I concur on your assessment of Ricky Lawson. Very nice fellow indeed. Sounds like a gas.
And while we're dropping names, I'm wondering what that picture of Soundgarden means? If it is to imply Kim Thayil looks like a terrorist I can only tell you looks are deceiving. Last Summer I ran into him at a local watering hole and offered to buy him a drink. He turned the drink down but was nice enough to come over and introduce himself and thank me for the offer. Another genuinely nice rocker. And I've got to tell you his outward appearance can be a little intimidating. I was especailly happy with the fact I was wearing my Steely Dan tour hat when he came over. Not too many Steely Dan/Soundgarden fans out there...
Pat
Hello Everyone- yes I saw some Stars. I spent some time with Bernard Purdy
on thursday and sunday (I'd met him twice before). He gave me his new CD.
I spent a few minutes with Ricky Lawson ( He was very cool) I gave him my CD.
I was at the Zildjian Booth and they had a Table for autographs ( I'm not a big "stand in line " guy). Seated at the table were Louie Bellson, Gregg Bissonette,Sonny Emory, Alan White, Vinnie Colliuta and a couple others. At another booth I saw Alan Holdsworth receive some kind of Award. Will Lee was at the Zoom booth playing some Bass. At Remo I saw Jazz great Jeff Hamilton, and as we talked Harvey Mason snuck up on him and Jeff said" You Got me Harvey you #%!@*!".I met Drummings "Ambassador" Dom Famularo
I Saw Steve Smith (Journey/Vital Information) We'd met before and used play with the same Sax player.
I also got to Meet Mr. Remo Belli himself and I showed them Pictures of my completed "Fish Drums". They Loved That.
There were lots more I'm sure but I don't recognize everybody.
On Sunday ,at show's end I bought a Case for my Djembe drum and filled it with some extra stands for my extra Drum Kits and sent it on with my suitcase on the plane.
Monday morning , when leaving the plane had a problem with re-fueling the left tank...we sat on the Tarmac for 2 1/2 hours while they fixed it.
Other than that the flights were good and uneventful...just the way I like it.
I'm sorry I didn't get with any GBers...It ws Important to hang with my older Brother Tom for the first time since losing our middle Bro' Michael.
WP1- My Cell worked great in California...but I turned it off while down in Oceanside Friday night, all of Saturday and Sunday Morning.
I'm glad to be back in the Florida Warmth...Jeans , Jacket and T the whole time there. Later, David
Mike Tyson could NEVER type that good!
Besides, I think that's the way your boy
Mike likes it. He's up on ANOTHER rape
charge aint he?
Oily, that's the way the boys in prison
like it no?
:)
Blaise: The only time your weather gets to 70 F is when my email gets to your house. Actually, we have Santa Ana's blowing, I do believe, or something to that effect. I hate dodging palm froms! :-)
Paul: The GB has definite cycles during the day as people come and go. Early morning is usually the time of Clas, Steviedan, Blaise, Howard and Gina, among others. So you are never alone.
Bob Tedde: Let us know what is going on with you and the band. April is starting to shape up and a possible trip to SD would be real nice.
That interview about Tribute: the Movie was quite a read. I hope some of you took the time to check it out. Much more then just the movie is discussed. Fans of music groups are mentioned, too.
tiny plumes of Long Island, whatever the f'k that means.
And I won't quit talking to myself!
Right Bill?
Right!
:)
And by "plumes," you little shitter queen, I mean underage balls. Hairless balls that you like to taunt with a lighter and fondle until your little thang does its thang. You can take the pervert out of the Bill, but you can't take the.....fuck, you love it fucked-up, oily, underaged, and hairless, right?
Bill, you sick fuck, quit talking to yourself. Go back to chasing the tiny plumes of L.I.
Yeah, I think you know what I mean, you little ass-licker.
thanks cyn!
cool grey skies with slight puff cloud definition that still make you squint.....
back to you, Jane, for that riveting interview with a chimpanzee....
clas - i did sign in early in the evening now that i think about it, then switched windows and left - i don't think i binked to exit so maybe my name lived on without me for the evening
back to saving the world
Aye Myke Tysin!,

U wante gangsta? Eye'll showe U REAL GANGSTA!
Whudda U laffin' at Pat?
Clas - yes, Night by Night is a winner. Sounded great on the 2000 tour!
Glad to see you picked up on that subtle, delightful and crucial F# against G dissonance that comes in the chord sequence between lines in the verse. It's the horns punching this one out that really gives it the bite. I have the same right hand part as you but use a different bass note:
(low to high)
C - C E G
D - D F# G
D - D F# G
D - D F# G
C - C E G
It's almost a straight C D D D C - but a little steely spice livens it up. Of course, the songbooks completely missed this one and wrote plain C and D chords.
Also, for the main chords in the verse I have Fadd9 after the Am7, rather than Dm7 (9th voiced at the top of the Fadd9 chord).
One thing that really keep the song grooving is that ultra-staccato clavinet part that kind of chugs through the whole song. Love it before the guitar solo when everything drops out of the mix except for this part.
There's also more of that guitar-doubling-the-bass stuff in the verse - sounds good to me!
Howard
Yesterday while playing "switch that channel" I happened upon a group playing the old bluegrass favorite "Rocky Mountain Breakdown"..sounded great! But wait!...Is that Steve Martin on banjo, Paul Shaeffer on piano, one of the ZZTop guys (or Leon Russell) on keyboard, Marty(?) on guitar, and a whole host of others... Well, I believe it is. And they looked like they were having a hellva good time. Catch it on the country channel sometime, you won't be able to stop your feet from tapping
Now, back to you LP for the weather.....
Clas, you heard the man. The place is "alive and kicking". So try to appear a little more lively, perhaps? Gotta keep up appearances... ;-)
It's like -50 or so Celsius out there, btw, but 70 Fareinheit in my head all the time. Wooohooo
No news is... no news.

Clas (1642) Warren speaks highly of you. Last I spoke to him, the man couldn't stop singing your praises.
Aus (1623) Live performance BTW? Non capisco. Please elaborate.
Most of you are probably fast asleep now. Hope you're having sweet dreams. Its one thirty in the afternoon here. Temperature about 26 degrees celcius.
More. Later.
P
Warren Zevon is a Jackson Browne wannabe. But he can't live up to Jacksons standards I'm afraid.
---
Howard - have been playing "Night by Night" a lot lately, I'm still amazed with Fagens song attitude, so nice. And the simplicity of the chords in that song is also amazing, it's around Am7, Dm7, Em7, C/F, E7+5-10 all the way. I think one gets the "Magic-Night by Night-feel" from the C/E - Gmaj/E chords
left hand - right hand (bottom to top):
E - C E G / E - D F# G / E - D F# G / E - D F# G / E - C E G
Our boys were just 23 or 24 years old at the time they recorded this stuff. Amazing.
---
LP - who was it then?
C
Just listening to Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy". Ring any bells for anyone out there?
Bill - come here and say that.
Mr Chow I admit to leaning mostly towards note for note perfection...at least the first time around the solo..then maybe take off on your own fret/key board fantasy. Don & Walt sweated blood to find them notes...let's at least acknowledge their expertise!
Duncan.......good to see you here too! The South Shields gig was, as always, a fantastic night...warm welcome, enthusiastic Dan fans up for a good night out despite the blizzard conditions. We'll be back around Easter some time so hope to meet you then....cheers!
Bad Sneaks....when we coming to Scotland? Well as soon as someone up there gives us a call and the gig.........it's gonna take some turnout though to cover even the fuel bill to get up there!! We'd love to do it...so any ideas?
Steveedan..........a great pleasure to meet you and trade stories of life on the (rough) tribute band road...it's scarily similar both sides of the pond it seems!!!! But what the hell ...we love it anyway. Loved your LONG email....I have one in the pipeline for you.....coming soon!
This a GREAT DAN spot......certainly not in the same slough of despond as alt.music.steely-dan!!! People are alive and kicking here......must get back more often.
Thanks to everyone for the great response to my posting last week....I had no idea it was such a lively place......home at last......aaaaaahhhhh!
cheers Paul Shotan
Make that "sweetheart".
Again, a typo.
Oh that? It was a typo.
This here is quite sufficient, StAl. You have better things to do, don't you? I'm not one to stress the importance of such formalities. Btw, go easy on yourself there, geez... to err is only human.
And Flame is not a "him", with all due respect imho.
A him calling me "sweatheart" and suddendly some muscle groups tense up, you know... say it ain't so, oh please.
W1P: Whew! Glad you clarified!
Blaise: I can't find your e-mail address. I know it's probably right under my nose, but... I had intended on sending you a message yesterday but the only address you left was "fuck." Would that be "fuck@off.com" or "fuck@youasshole.com?"
Sorry for the profanity folks, but this ain't no sissy board.
StAl
Clarification -- "last show ever at the Catamaran" does not mean "last show ever as The Steely Damned" -- the lack of precision is embarrassing.
Anyone else crack up ... reading the "" PERISCOPE "" PAGE in the latest
Newsweek ?? Called "" Pretzel Logic "" !! ( Regards Bush and his
swallowing of the pretzel... Simply perfect....hope to come back here
often....that is when i figure out all of the lyrices to all of the
songs lol
six degrees of separation?
in the cyber-world, completely believable - check the url out above
Aus, you'd swear to my "good moral character"? You are a prince! Our issues were mostly state law (there was a Daubert issue). I think the 8th Cir. is the court of last resort on this one.
Which One's Pink: Veeeery nice counsellor. Now you need to apply for and get granted a writ of certiorari so you can argue in what's probably the most grandest of all courts in this fair land....of course, I never argued before the Justices but I did get sworn in and admitted there. If you care, I'd be glad to sponsor you for admittance to the US Supreme Court....let me know.
Aus
Some info: the most recent Rolling Stone also mentions that the Dan have booked studio time for the recording of a new Lp.
Floridavid -- hey man, get a cell phone that works in SoCal -- mine works in Fla!
Tribute News: Rumour has it that The Steely Damned may be playing their final show ever on 2/17 at the Cannibal Bar at the Catamaran Resort (my source is the BT Express "do it til you're satisfied, whatever it is")
Tribute News (cont): This Saturday, W1P hits the road to happy funland and plays House of Blues Anaheim as the opening act for Dave Brock as Jim Morrision in Wild Child (Dave Brock played Jim in the 1992 film Death Becomes Her). The great thing about this is that HOB Anaheim is about 50 yards from the ESPN Zone.
Tribute The Movie News: "Film Threat" -- a Hollywood indie film website has an extensive interview with the makers of Tribute The Movie -- including an explanation of why Which One's Pink? ended up on the cutting room floor!

Hey Aus, just argued a case in front of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis -- the most beautiful modern courthouse building I've ever seen overlooking the Arch, the River and Busch Stadium.
Is everyone ready to see Mike Tyson get knocked on
his ass again by Lennox Lewis? After his latest
tantrum I know I can't...
You can take the guy out of the ghetto but you can't
take the ghetto out of the guy, aye Mike?
;)
And why should anyone stop working if they don't wish to? Consider the possibility that work can be interesting and perhaps much more interesting than retirement. Dave Brubeck is self-employed so he get's to make his own rules and doesn't have to follow some stupid corporation's rules. Likewise for Peggy Lee.
Peggy Lee refused to STOP working
ah, LP is feeding our hopes for another New One, isn't she? starved puppies we are, always craving and raving when the Loopsville Joker gets the best of our host who has to clean up the mess each time ... nice subterraelian topic though ... like Ange mentioned, the Blue Book post, some interesting reading, yes.
Red Blazer, yep, that Sun Mountain tune does it for me i'm always up there when around the Blue Book, colors ... somehow i find it hard to picture colors when listening to Steely Dan, it's not colors one gets to see.
Emiel van Egdom is a friend of Bobby Militello who's in the Brubeck line up. Mr. Militello doesn't need to play the music for a living, it's his passion though. People around the Buffalo, NY area could be familiar with The Tralf, Militello's jazzclub in almost classic setting, reminding of the days perhaps one would gush over Peggy Lee, or way before those days, Dinah Shore, Julie London etc.
An interesting thought, though, about musicians like Brubeck and others in that league, whether they play for the money or because they still love to be on stage. Somehow i can't imagine they primary NEED the money since even Metheny and others have invested in real estate and such, like mr. Militello and his family own a bundle of restaurants too .. so my simple deduction now is, they play because they LOVE music and LOVE jazz and what else are they supposed to do, right? wait until Alzheimer hits them, or age gracefully reminiscing .. Peggy Lee refused to work and continued until it took her last breath .. now she is probably really singing "is that all there is" and giving all who passed on before her a cold shoulder .. or fever, haha!
Even Walter returned to the active scene after some years of retirement ... it is only human and understandable, especially in a professional musician's life to question one's drives, the creative well may seem like drained until it's dried up and dreary ...
Live performance isn't as inspired all the time, one gig can sound better than another ...
Banyan Tree Luciditary Looping Bow,
G.
Paul asks, where is angel? Yes, I am still alive, just laying low after your other comment. :-)
Catalyst era stuff. I too like Sun Mountain and so does Ole, if memory serves. I also love the fact that Walter does the harmonies with Donald.
Raw stuff, for sure and it hurts my ears to listen to it on headset, but once in a while, it is an interesting listen.
Floridavid finally checks in! I was afraid you got mugged or something by another drummer at the Remo booth. :-)
Glad you had a good time. Did you see anyone cool at the show?
I don't know how many of you read the Blue pages, but the dissertation by Tristan Fabriani regarding the '74 concert released, was an interesting plea. I agree with Hoops, that I don't think it would ever happen, but there are some songs from that era concert, that I would love to have a decent sound board version of. Especially, Pretzel Logic, Instrumental YGT II, This All Too Mobile Home. Dream on.
LP: I did not see anything on the ODP that said they had an album coming out soon, just that they are working on one. I think the DJ misunderstood the Holiday Newsletter.
hey now - fe fi fo fum - dave brubeck doggin it? surely you jest (airplane joke, let it rest) - i agree with aus, oleander - i saw him last year at Sanders Theater at Harvard and he was as smooth as silk, still composing, still leading his charge - i think you are in for a pleasant evening - enjoy!
not in chat last night, nope clas, wasn't me?
mu/b - loved the list of Enquirer questions, what a hoot - better than obscure celebrity references for sure
yeah i know b - every group of people assembled has their nasty closets - don't judge all for the acts of the few is the best answer i can give - i have a feeling the cardinal will step down, as he should
hiya paul, you so passed your test, i thought i posted that - but your kidneys, wow, yipes!
i found this hilarious site listing all the wacky things sold on ebay - called whowouldbuythat, i think, i'll find the url and post it later, it's pretty funny
happy wednesday!
Paul: Nice to see another Krimso fan around these parts....there are a few of us scattered around here....are you familiar with that live recording BTW?
Oleander: I saw Mr. Brubeck and his quartet play this past summer in Newport, Rhode Island. While he's visibly aged, I thought he rocked, as did his counterparts on stage. I never got the impression he was "doggin' it" for cash at all...I think you'll find the same when you catch him and his group. I'd be curious to see some granularity from you regarding the gig...
Aus
jjeff - 1611 - lurking, as you can see.
Luckless - still waiting for my test results. The Steely Dan one, not the urine.
angel, wherefore art though?
Went to see "The Congolese Band" on Sunday in Kirstenbosch - a beautiful, enormous public garden on the slopes of Table Mountain. Bongos, bass, lead, drums, vocalsist and five gyrating, grinding dancers. Had the all the white females in the audience up on their feet trying to emulate them but they just didn't get it. The band were repetitious but fun. They even had people assume the "shoot" position. Crazy mothers.
Q: If a man is standing alone in the woods and there are no women around, is he still wrong? That's what I want to know. Please.
Catalyst? It suck like a vaccuum cleaner but I guess it had to be done.
Seriously I like Ida Lee and Little Kawaii loves Android Warehouse and Gina loves Sun Mountain and...
Aussie, hi, your post 1593 took the thought right outta my mind. Was just pondering the days of King Crimson and the likes of "Larks Tongue in Aspic" and shit, there you go and mention Fripp and Eno. Well I never.
Discovered a really cool seminal Steely Dan double album called "Catalyst". A lot of their later stuff in embryonic form and some previously unreleased stuff. Raw but powerful. Makes for curious listening.
Anyone else got it or heard of it?
Oh yeah Blaise, we had a meeting in Chat last nite, you're audi. Sorry.
C
blaise - why you're still here? It's like vacuumcleaning, it sucks and it has to be done.
2 Against Nature? Haven't been able to enjoy that one, my equipment is just a simple home stereo.
C
If the Boston archdiocese can pay 10 000 000$ to settle 15 pedophilia-related suits out of 30, how much cash do these fat bastards really have? And how muck of that money is yours, lp?
OK, let's pretend they're both right, bin Laden is dead in Afghanistan and not alive in Pakistan. Can't an unmanned spy plane spot a useless, abandonned dyalisys machine out there in the field?
Can you blame the devil or its advocate, Johnny Cochran, if your wife drowns your five kids in the tub? Only in America?
Why are all terrorists tried in Virginia anyway? Is this particular State representative of America as a whole, as I always suspected? And isn't our Midnite Cruiser overworked enough as it is?
If the Rams are unbeatable, why are we even interested in the Pittsburgh game at all? Boredom?
Why wasn't that guy in Everybody Loves Raymond casted as Ziad Jarrad for the upcoming Flight 93 TV movie?
Can we really speak of art in the age of it's endless reproductibility and commodification? And why bring up Walter Benjamin if Donald doesn't read this?
If the infamous rolling stone has stopped rolling, does it gather any moss now? If rock and roll is through rehashing its three chord thang every which way imaginable, why do people pretend like it can still be relevant? If it entered the museum, can it really still rock in there or does it keep quiet now?
True, Mu. Why would I be caught dead with a Macintosh, let alone an old one? And does an Imac make a decent neo-art deco table lamp?
If you need high-end audiophile gear to truly appreciate something, is it any good?
Can I be Flame too then?
Does Gina really go beyond Western rationale through her writing style, as I initially thought, or is she being just plain loopy? ;-)
And why do people promise to email me and then elect not to? Do I have cooties or something?
Think about it: 200 000 lethal doses of Anthrax made it through our postal machines and resulted in only 5 casualties. The White House and everyone in it are still standing as well. Why does noone out there care to mention we were fucking lucky in the end here, starting with Ari Fleischer?
And, last but not least, why am I still here after telling everyone I was done? Why am I unable to pull a "tones"? Clas??
Hey now! My name is Pralen, I live in Copenhagen. I am almost 2 meters tall, my friends call me "The Great Dane", I love Steely Don, very much too.
Yeah? And Labrador is'nt a dog uh? Is that also a “Canadian Province”?
What's next? Can we expect a post from a Great Dane soon, or what?
C
What are you talking about son? New Foundland is a Canadian province.
New Foundland is a DOG, you can't LIVE in a dog fucking IMPOSTER!
C
heya all! i'm 26 old and living in port au basques, new foundland. i recently discovered steely den on the radio.

How's life today? Where's Bin Ladin?? Dead???

Stevee my old friend, I am sitting here, every day, almost, turning pages in my 50 kilos dictionary, in my struggle to spell properly, and YOU, you are so fucking lazy. Why not look up the words you can't spell?
It's UKELELE and it's GRETSCH.

's everybody listen to the great saxophone-player at my homesite, Stefan Isaksson? Go to my webpage (URL above) click on musik in the menubar. In “Dr Warren's Heights” he's doing pretty good I think. “The Catwalk” is there too, and soon I'll add more songs as they come. “The U-Turn” is next. And then I'm about to do a new version of “Pompe's Be Bop Bodega” (going to add a banjo this time).
If you don't have broad bands, there's mini MP3's for modems.

Hi GB-ers --
Floridavid - well, that's how it goes sometimes. I hope that you enjoyed your stay here in sunny southern California. Now, for some NAMM annecdotes --
A friend of mine, whom I jam with periodically, is a professional drummer and he is an endorsee of Gretch drums (is that spelled correctly?).
He was at the NAMM show doing the rounds. While there he hung out with Bernard Purdie, Ricky Lawson, and Harvey Mason. It turns out that while he was at the Gretch booth, a photographer was taking shots for the Gretch website and took some photos of both my friend and also of Harvey Mason. (For those of you who are not familiar with Harvey Mason, go buy Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" CD. Then you will know, and never forget, who this great funk drummer is.) So, my friend and Harvey M. hung out for a while. It turns out that they both worked for a singer a few years back, and also both come from Atlantic City. So when my friend mentioned this to Harvey, Harvey remembered being on the same gig with him, and told my friend that he could sub for him any time. Evidently, the NAMM show is also very good for music networking.
I previously posted (a few days ago) that another friend of mine who worked in one of the presenter booths at the NAMM show spoke briefly to Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. So that's 3 Steely Dan alumnus sightings and encounters from the NAMM show alone. Not bad, my Steely brothers and sisters.
Oh, and about that line about someone playing the ueuqalaylee (how the heck to spell that picalo-guitar instrument?) equalling Larry Carlton (or Rally Calrton for our Oriental Dan fans) here's the answer:
The statement that a guy playing the ueuqalaylee = Larry Carlton is true when the guy playing the ueuqalaylee IS Larry Carlton. Yah-Huh?
Stevee-NAMM-Dan, thank's Harvey Man
Just back from Anaheim....very sorry to have missed meeting any GBers. Angel, Steveedan,Craig,JWMalibu..my humble apologies.
My Brother and Sons and wives kidnapped me friday night and took me to Oceanside to my nephews house. We Ate Ribs, Drank exotic beers and bonged our way through till sunday morning. I then headed back to the NAMM show for a few bargains before catching an early flight out. Maybe next time.

Aja--mmm, delicious. Is he coming to JazzFest too? To get the DanFan seal of approval?
lp--any such reference sure escapes me. I'm still banking on '03, but boy would I loooove to be wrong.
jjeff--yes, have read Children of God--very interesting, the exposition of prey/predator races in symbiosis--some really creepy cross-cultural practices that are hard to be relativistic about--and depravity knows no planetary bounds.
cara--when you get over feeling puny, c'mon over, I'll take you to Zambra again for some tapas and wine.
Dr. K--come on over here and feel me flex my lobes, but keep that tube to yourself. OK, so: question: What's a dollar three eighty?
Both Cake and Dave Brubeck are coming to town, no, not on the same bill. Has anyone seen Brubeck lately? Some musical friends here saw him last year and were kvetching that he barely played and they felt he was just trying to rake in some bucks while doing as little as possible. I plan to go anyway, as I've never seen him, but don't have high hopes.
Re: art debate: I'm no practitioner of aesthetics, and don't even qualify as an aesthete, but you guys are barely tickling the surface of one of the great philosophical currents of our time. Aesthetics asks: what is art? what is beauty? why? who decides? is there a second "sense of taste"--that is, not taste as in oral sensation but as in a faculty for appreciating and judging art? Are there objective criteria for judging art? Do I have any answers? No, just pointing out that there are whole graduate programs and enough journal articles to choke Moby Dick on this subject. It's fine to start with a dictionary definition, but that's just a start, and is itself culturally determined. And reductio ad absurdum (is a drunk with a lampshade equivalent to Larry Carlton?) doesn't further things. Not to be reductionist meself, I think of art as (inspiration+expression+technique) x the idiosyncratic way it makes you feel/cultural milieu. I don't know if there's a constant somewhere in that expression. And that's probably pretty simplistic in itself.
Hello one and all..............
Just stopped by to say hi to my e-buddies, hope everyone is well. Already tantalizing talk of a "new one" in the air.....
Woke up Sunday morning with the strange premonition that the single life I've relished for years will be ending sooner than I thought. No one particular reason, just a premonition. The sunlight was streaming in through my balcony doors, the seabreeze starting to warm up as I stayed in bed reading all morning, just because I could. I had chocolate cake for breakfast, in bed, just because life isn't always going to be this relaxed. Had a near-miss over to the house last night, and suddenly woke up at 5:00 am this morning because he was so heavily in my thoughts I couldn't sleep. Too early to tell if we'll hit this time or not, but what a doll.
Chere-hey grrlie, post some juju/voodoo vibes for us, k?
It's a Marvin Gaye, All The Way Around night tonight.

hey - i heard on 92.9 this morning here in boston, upon their airplay of "my old school" that the website said that the new album is out soon - is this dj snowing me or what? the official site has nothing on it - anyone know what the deal is?
nmn, mib, did you guys hear that too?
1518-Mr. Chow:Live concerts and what you want. I try to think of what I want to hear before I go. The one and only time I've seen SD, I wished to hear something( anything) note for note, and something( anything) with a very different flavour from the original. They played My Old School, note for note with a few added guitar riffs at the end, and of course Reeling In The Years, the Alive In America version. A combination of the two is nice for me.
1521-Steviedan:Ciamar a tha sibh? ( Gaelic for"how are you?") The Rankins were a local gem from Cape Breton, N.S. Beautiful harmonies. Sadly, they are no more since the death of the oldest brother two years ago. The youngest brother has a solo album out called Song Dog, I think.
1523-Paul T.Shotan:Point well made, although I see Bad Sneekz side, too. A great website! Love that rippling water effect.
I've been hearing two versons of Lola over the last few years, one that says cherry cola and the other that says coka cola. Which ones the original? I can't remember anymore.

Is Tones not around anymore?

First of all, I thought that the Mars Rover sent
back COLOR PICTURES. Man, what a rip off!
Although the video was blown way up, and therefore
grainy, I could have sworn that I saw that face-looking

it was trying to say something but I could'nt make
out what it was. Perhaps it was trying to relay the
release date of the next Steely Dan CD?
Spooky, but possible...
Yes, and also incredible is the fact that I would never post movies, grossly large photos, etc, AND that my isp isn't included in St. Al's list

Blaise: I'm really sorry. I was confused. I thought it was someone else, honestly. After I saw your post I realized that not only had I made it sound like you were the spammer, I also realized the person I thought it was isn't within the block in question. Look for an e-mail from me in a few minutes...
This illustrates the many flaws in this method of communication. The reality is you never really know who is posting anonymously and who isn't. For all any of you know a lot of old negativity could have been me. Although, I can honestly say I only posted anonymously once or twice on the old guestbook and never here. But, let's take the example of the person who posts as "Flamer." I am 99.9% sure I know who this person is and consider him an "internet friend." Not to say this person has posted anything I'd consider cruel or unreasonable, but you just never really know...
The fact is I don't really care if someone spams the guestbook. It took all of about 2 minutes to fix the problem and that's only because the person in question submitted the same post a dozen times.
To make matters worse, not only did I allege something, I wont follow up with the true content of this allegation. It isn't important and it's already proved to cause too many problems.

I've been reading on what were the best acts in the past 20+ years since 1980. NOWS'S MY TURN!
1.R.E.M: Fresh and organic rock without any superproducer coming out to dilute it. Stipe's lyrics cut to the bone. Sarcastic, yet poignant at times.
2.THE PRETENDERS- Chrissie Hynde is one of my favorite songwriters male or female. Back In The Chain Gang, Middle Of The Road and 2,000 Miles
are some of the best rock songs ever written and performed. Work best with drummer Martin Chambers. The Learning To Crawl CD is their masterpiece with songs about maturity, motherhood, aging and death.
3.EVERTHING BUT THE GIRL- Everthing right up until, they went techno.
Missing was good, but the rest of the releases don't hold up to their
early works.
4.INCOGNITO- A British jazz/soul band. If you never heard of them, you're missing the best of British soul. Recommended CDs: Beneath The Surface, 100 degrees and Rising, and Positivity.
5.THE POLICE- Need I say more. Greatest rock trio around. Kickass.
6.DIANA KRALL- Smooth, warm and seductive and that can be said for her piano playing, her singing and her sexy good looks. She even has a bit of the Fagen sneer when she sings on TV.
7.BEASTIE BOYS- OK, so it's a rap act, but they never acted like gangsta's nor did they stick with the same monotonous crap that today's
rappers do. One of the few that survived with their careers still intact.
8.SADE- See number 6. Okay, she doesn't play piano, but she is still timeless and ranks with Lena Horne and Billie Holliday as one of my all time favorite female singers. Her recent CD outsold even Ricky Martin's
last one. Proving that you don't have to livin' La Vida Loca to still
sell records.
9.DAVE MATTHEWS BAND- Music without boundaries, complex lyrics, and no
apologies for not sounding commercial. Sounds like the 90's version of Steely Dan.
10.JOE JACKSON- Why isn't his record company doing enough to promote his records. He changes styles while keeping his goal to make interesting music. The most underrated artist in the music scene.
There, that's my list. Gotta get off the caffeine. See Ya!
From time to time I like to send annoying emails to friends
and acquaintances. I do it because what the hey, it's fun!
Although I seem to be annoying you people just fine I am
very frustrated by the fact that I cannot seem to officially
annoy the boys at the top.
When I head over to the Official Steely Dan site I find that
the email section of the site has'nt been updated since
September of 2000. What's up with that? How in the heck
is a slightly off-kilter (but very well meaning) guy like
myself supposed to know that his annoying emails are
having the desired effect if those emails are never posted?
Does anyone know what's going on over there?
I demand to be heard! Even if I don't have anything to say.

Sorry -- I made a typo --
... Just like you said, you can hear the effects tracks (like the shimmering chimes wafting and drifting from side to side) and the horn tracks in the rear speakers.

Hello Doctor µ - I am NOT the proud owner of the audio equipment needed to play those fabulous DVD-A CDs, but a close friend of mine is.
I was over at his place a couple of weeks ago and he played 2 of those DVD-A CDs for me. One was Two Against Nature, and I really liked it a lot. Just like you said, you can hear the effects tracks (like the shimmering chimes wafting and drifting from sided) and the horn tracks in the rear speakers.
Compared to conventional stereo, it is a far superb listening experience.
However --- there is something that you must experience, µ.
The DVD-A CD of Pat Metheny's Imaginery Day is far superior to Two Against Nature. (I need not remind people here how much I love Steely Dan music, but ...) The imaging on the Imaginery Day DVD-A CD is breathtaking. We listened to a few Steely Dan tunes and then popped in the Metheny CD. The difference was startling. If you don't have it, RUN DON'T WALK TO THE STORE AND GET IT ...
You won't regret it. I can safely say that in your case, you will be µ-ved.
Oh, and St. Al, nice rig for a grand. A grand rig that is. My opti-mouse has left, right, scroll, ultra left, and ultra right, and everything is programmable. Let's hope no one else in the Ravens organization dresses up like a pimp like unconvicted murderer Ray Lewis did. Ick! Ugly fur coat. Soe innocent raccoons had to be stabbed to death for him to wear them. Of course, he must have killed them.
By the way, there were two different versions of Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4.
The 70's classic version and the 80's bombast version. Which do you prefer?
By the way, I picked up the new issue of Rolling Stone only because Jennifer Garner is on the cover. In it, the mag mentions briefly that
Don and Walt have "logged time in a New York studio to work on new songs for the follow up to 2000's Grammy-winning Two Against Nature."
There's also a brief profile on an up and coming jazz pianist/singer named Norah Jones. She's 22 years old, has a CD coming out soon on Blue Note and says that she's not inspired by today's music and thather influences are Bill Evans, Aretha, and Ray Charles. She says, "Old music is just so badass and original." HEAR THAT BRITNRY AND N'STINK?
Finally, a belated Happy 54th Birthday to Mr. Fagen. Please get the new one out before more crap dominates the charts.

Dr. Kruger,
Please accept my sincerest appologies regarding your
theory as it relates to the "25 or 6 to 4" Chicago
song. My sister has just informed me that regardless
of what I think, I'm still dumb. The 6 on any ordinary
clock obviously does not stand of 25 minutes before
the next hour, rather it stands for 30 minutes before
the next hour. Therefore your assessment of the
meaning appears to be correct.
The problem is that all my clocks are digital.
Now I have to purchase a standard clock....
Jeez! Women know everything :)
Dear Dr. Kruger,
I partially agree with your assessment of the Chicago
tune "25 or 6 to 4". Unfortunately the meaning of
this phrase does'nt exactly jive with your conclusions.
If we just study the face of an ordinary clock we find
that the number 6 on the clock stands for two things,
35 minutes past the previous hour and/or 25 minutes
before the next hour.
Therefore the phrase "25 or 6 to 4" would most
appropriately be translated as "25 minutes to 4 o'clock
OR 6 (the numeral on the clock) to 4".
I hope this clears things up for you. Sorry that you
wasted 30 years on something I figured out in 30 seconds.
:)
LP & MU,
Looks like we have another rare Steely Dan related
artifact just waiting to be recovered from the

ST. Al,

I can't find it anywhere...

St. Al, I can do everything you do and more with only ONE clicky button. That leaves my middle finger free...
Let's talk recent history: Apple's stock worth has virtually doubled since Enron revealed its losses on 10/18. Dell, Compaq and IBM are lagging...and Apple's P/E ratio is significantly lower and thus the stock still a bargain...someone has to get us through the recession...
Hey Mu: History? Yeah, and so is Apple, but we've already covered that here... And my mouse has 2 buttons, a scroll wheel AND no mouse ball (optical). What does yours have? Once again, more options with a PC... *snicker*
Oh, and speaking of Apple. I just assembled a new computer (yeah, you can do that with PC's) and I noticed many of the "technological advantages" Apple "has over the PC" isn't the case. Seems as though this new PC/Motherboard architecture pretty much matches the G4. Memory addressing, bus speed, etc.

what does win9x 4.90 mean? am i cool technologically or no?
St.Al: Around 1980, a Xerox engineer invented this thing called the "mouse." Steve Jobs got permission to use the algorithm, since the hot shots at Xerox thought it was a joke...later on Bill Gates stole Apple's OS. The rest is history...
LP: I wish it were available somewhere...bet I haven't seen it in 15 years. That cartoon style was certainly distinctive...almost a New Yorker sophisticated slash and angle kinda thing - some shapes colored in, some not...The current kids show Power Puff Girls (which decorates my daughter's bedroom) has a bit of that style - check out the Professor...
Tomorrow's Girls also had a video (saw it once on VH1 in Houston when THEY played videos), though a little less exciting - seemed kinda weird with Fagen's shadowy face morphing in and out or something...
Alright, let me spell it out for you.
The meaning of Chicago's song, 25 or 6 to 4, is that the rock and/or roll artiste is staying up very late, trying to write a rock and/or roll song.
The 25 or 6 to 4 in the lyrics means that the time on the clock is 'twenty five or twenty six minutes to four o'clock am- in other words, 3:35 or 3:36am!
Now don't pretend you knew that.
I've spent the last thirty years trying to figure that out!
Don't tell me that, as you were honking around, trying to lose your collective virginities in some stupid kid's bedroom, listening to Terry Kath's out of tune SG, you knew as soon as you heard the lyrics "25 or 6 to 4" that it meant the time on the clock!
I can't even begin to tell you what I had to go through to find that out. Plumbing the depths of Arthur Lee's defective unconscious with water therapy is no romp through the park! I'm finding out things about the 1960s LA rock scene that would turn whatever hair you have left gray!
Now start coughing up the money, as I said in my last communique, this rubber tubing is darn expensive!
More and More Impatiently Yours,
Dr. Warren K.

Bill,

art (ärt)
n. Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.
- The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.
- The study of these activities.
- The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group.
- High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.
- A field or category of art, such as music, ballet, or literature.
- A nonscientific branch of learning; one of the liberal arts.
- A system of principles and methods employed in the performance of a set of activities: the art of building.
- A trade or craft that applies such a system of principles and methods: the art of the lexicographer.
- Skill that is attained by study, practice, or observation: the art of the baker; the blacksmith's art.
- Skill arising from the exercise of intuitive faculties: “Self-criticism is an art not many are qualified to practice” (Joyce Carol Oates).
Now Bill, once again I ask...WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? hee hee...
StAl
It seems that the term "artist" is thrown around
pretty loosely these days... Anyone who has does
anything is automatically described as an "artist".
It is my contention that this should not be so.
Let's take a minute to differentiate between an
"artist" and an "entertainer". An entertainer is,
above all, interested in entertaining you.
Entertainers will stand on there heads and spit
gold coins if that will get your attention for
a little while. They crave attention. They need
your approval and will do anything to get it.
An artist, on the other hand, is engaged in the
process of creating something which is appealing
to themselves. They're not interested in
entertaining you. They have something inside which
they have to get out. Whether you like it or not
is unimportant. Artists are engineers of ideas and
emotions. They place words to paper, notes to musical
arrangements, or paint to canvas in order to convey
some inner thought which they cannot otherwise
relay. Mass acceptance isn't the reason for thier
actions.
Back in the mid-1970's two very popular songwriters
by the names of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker did
something which at the time was considered VERY
UNUSUAL in the music industry...they stopped
performing live.
All the record company exec's naturally thought that
this was the hieght of insanity of course, as live
tours were thought to improve overall record sales.
Why, they asked, why would these two songwriters
simply refuse to continue thier live performances in
order to concentrate soley on studio production of
thier albums?
The answer was simple, but not fully understood, by the
powers-that-be at the time... Donald Fagan and Walter
Becker were not entertainers. They considered themselves
to be artists. They were'nt interested in standing up
on stage and recieving any applause for thier work.
They were engaged in something greater than mere
entertainment; They were engaged in art.
As the eighties rolled around, Donald and Walter
split up to try thier hand at some solo work.
Donald had a hit album with "Nightfly" in 1982.
Strangely, no videos were produced for any of the
songs on this album. Donald did'nt tour either.
The music would just have to speak for itself,
and it did.
Walter worked with various acts throughout the 80's.
In 1990 he and Roger Nichols colaborated with
Michael Franks on the very successful "Blue Pacific"
CD released by Micheal Franks. Walters involvement
was generally unknown, he brought no attention to
himself.
Art and entertainment can be two separate things or not.
It is very rare for an artist to find themselves in the
entertainment industry. When it does happen though it
can be a very special thing. Reluctant entertainers as
they are, Walter Becker and Donald Fagan are artists
first.
As you look around at the various so-called "artists"
that the record companies have put forth, how many
would you consider to be artists and how many are
merely entertainers who have been inappropriately
labeled?
Quite a few i'll bet.
Paul , can you put up your dates on tour in the UK , I have tried to get on the website but no joy?? Will you get the beers in when your at the bar mate??Regards Dano.

Sorry - Michael White is on JOS not WOH
wormy: thanks for the depressing review (!)
bill: yes, how bout them pat's huh? my husband was in vip box seats (food-booze, the whole bit) on the 5 yard line for that show, said it was a religious experience (which is why he didn't get to church with me/kids on sunday, not because he got in at 4:30 AM - LOL) - the snow made it that much more fun he said - yes, a win is a win as the damocles (sp?) of the grid iron, bill parcells would say - the bad news is i am not sure they can topple the steelers who look a lot like they did when i was a fan of them in the 70's, when terry bradshaw played (!) - if they get em, it will be a squeak in like saturday night's game, but my prediction is otherwise for the moment
happy MLK day, dream on, dream big...
Q? Where the fuck is Q? Have you heard the title track on DVD-A!!??
Let's talk technology and Steely Dan. Yes, I'm talkin' TvN in DVD-A -
stereo. Sure, the 5.1 mode is nice for special effects, but you lose
the 192 MHz sampling (as opposed to 44 MHz on a CD). The drums - now WETTER, the spacing - larger, the cymbals - crisp, the resonance - vibrating, the dynamic range - deeper, the warmth - more soothing. What a Shame About Me, the *title track*, Almost Gothic, Jack of Speed, Negative Girl - incredible, and WOH an aural-gasm. The intro to WASAM is the most amazing engineering I've ever heard - the chimes shimmer back and forth, sparkling across the speakers like tiny diamonds. Besides Vinnie C, I've become a huge fan of Michael While (WASAM, WOH)...
Miles Davis' plan is revealed. TvN is the MOST bop-ilicious by far
of their albums. In DVD-A it really has that LIVE Plush sound you've
been cryin' for. I dig the DVD-A TvN as much as Katy and Aja...
Look, the stuff was recorded hi-tech. It sounds best that way - and
loud pumping through the speakers. WARNING: DO NOT USE HEADPHONES UNLESS YOU"VE GOT THE BEST - drums will sound HARSH!
Clas: It has to be more than my daughter and I. She stole the TvN CD...I'm diggin' the DVD-A. It's their jazziest yet over a Stax/James Brown rhythm section. On Aja, I love Black Cow, Home At Last, the title track and Feldman's piano on Home At Last - but Peg and Josie have gotten very old - the classic albums breakdown did bring in some new life...Aja is strictly LA jazz (a derivative of cool jazz). TvN is really an odd, but cool sounding album close to their bop and cool jazz sources - the horn charts/themes (by Fagen and Leonhart) are less predictable than Tom Scott's.
It's really their most queer (in the Alice in Wonderland sense) album. Kamakiriad had some of that alien surrealism in the 50s Sci-Fi B movie sense. Kinda like the aliens from Star Trek playing bop-funk. I used to think TvN resembled the Kama grooves, but I think that much less so now, especially on stereo DVD-A.
I do get a weird but cool feeling. But as Dr. Fagen (or was it Becker) said "Weird is good." It could be:
(1) Fagen's voice - more hoarse and with less bit, but with a greater
'bandwidth" smooth and more non-wavering. It sounds like a freakin'
trombone. I'm serious. listen!
(2) That wurlitzer takes on a Mizar 5 sound - some interesting ideas..
(3) Fagen's and Leonhart's horn charts sound like alien bop and cool
jazz for sure...
(4) That bass clarinet is driving me crazy
(5) There's a fuzzy and warm, off-kilter sheen on everything
At any rate, when listening to TvN I feel like I'm being tickled in my
esophagus with a feather while my body is being covered in liquid caramel simultaneously...
Start off with that stained,
Hawaiian Tropic-like styled,
You see...
that blouse,
Watch it vanish while
There's some room out back,
With a few hinderin' seams,
When she sits, it rips
Does she strip for me?
With my trousers gone
I get ready
To make that stark nakee run
I've got to show
My fine lookin' buns
When the cold wind comes
I'll go wear my Birthday suit
Now I'm kicking back
In my Fruit o'da Looms
While she's dressed too warm
"Late Forties attitude"
We have naked lunch
With some naked dude
Then her sweatshirt breaks
While coming out of the train
And in her Fruit'o da Looms
She's a hurrying
While the city freezes over
We'll be streakin' down to the shore
Will she bring up lack
Of life once more?
Goodnight Virginia!
Have a nice life, y'all and please, please, drive carefully.
Toodles.
gina - looking forward to meeting on your turf
I'll get the details as things progress
JIm# - I'll be back brother with hots on for crawfish monica
don't think the delicacy of North Sea Eel Pie will satisfy that itch
speaking of eighties crap
went to see english beat last night
back up band Molly Ringwolds - a poor brit 80's cover band
complete with 80's garb including a devo hat/suit, motley crue look alike etc.
okay so their breakfast club simple minded song was okay
main attraction? pardon my french
the english beat was really the english beat off
only the lead singer from the band
no horns, a dj sqwonk instead of a rythym section
a guitarist who only knew bar chords
and a keyboardist
"sooner or later they will let you down" indeed
stayed for only 4 songs and then needed to hear the originals when I got home even though it was 1:30 and I had to be up at 5
and I really liked EB in their prime
wt
Wormman!!!
Well, that's a deal, we'll meet in April for sure.
John Beasley will be here in March or maybe April, so perhaps some things can be combined, who knows :-)
Banyan Tree This Is Fun Bow,
G.
StAl - the 80's was a whore.
Bill - you're saying you want the same lucky-rush as when you heard Aja the first time? That's impossible, you're older now, it won't happen. You can only “be” your time once. Who of us are constantly fainting over the “Two Against Nature”-Cd? No one. Are we listening to it? No.
re cover bands - it's impossible to make that “Classical”-music reference. We're talking about a rockband and Donald Fagens voice.
The only Steely-cover I have heard that made sense was that soundtrack from “I me and whatever”, Bad Sneakers, a totally different style. It's the only way to do it.
C, I prefer Night by Night over Janie Runaway
1531 -angel - just a wild, wild stab in the dark! Aren't you?

Did anyone here watch the New England Patriots/
Oakland Raiders game last night?
WAS THAT FOOTBALL OR WHAT! That was football like
it's supposed to be in January. The field was
covered in six inches of snow and it was
coming down so hard you could barely see!
Congradulations Patriots fans. The call by the
officials with 1 minute and 43 seconds left in the
game will be talked about for years to come.
But as a former Patriots coach once said,
"a win is a win is a win" -Bill Parcells.
Hats off to Bill Belichick, he deserves it.
Speaking of new music, have any of you folks caught the video from this new dude Remy Shand on MTV? The song "Take a Message" is pure born-again blue-eyed soul--this young'un even got signed by Motown. Even more intriguing, if you wade through the bio on his website (http://128.11.96.243/mach18/default.asp?artistID=342) you'll find he lists none other than Steely Dan among his influences (along with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and a whole bunch of other names folks here will recognize). According to said bio he even took four years of obsessive/perfectionistic studio work to make his soon-to-released debut CD--sounds familiar, huh? Anyhow, I've really grooved on this single whenver I've caught it, and wanted to share what I think is a good thing. Cheers!

~: People either love or hate Paul's new one.
There are some things that one must accept:
1) Complaining about Paul's lyrics is akin to complaining the Professional Wrestling is fake...
2) After Flaming Pie, a very good album, only marred at times by Jeff Lynne's overproduction - Paul's just not going to try to recreate the Beatles' sound again...
3) Instead, he recreates a Wings sound - Paul's in love again...
Driving Rain is a pretty good Wings CD with a taste of the White album. The tunes aren't bad...Father Time is starting to catch up with Paul's voice though he gets in a nice "oooooooooohh" in From a Lover to a Friend. The production is pretty organic, raw/lo-fi but not as commercial as the 70s Wings recordings. The bass, especially over the first half of the album, is classic Paul. The thing that saves the album IMHO is the quirkiness and weirdness of the production. Tiny Bubble, She's Given Up Talkin', Heather, Bridge on Id Do, Magic, Your way is a nice Backbird type of song, About You. guitar work in Back in the Sunshine, Rinding to Jaipur is a nice tribute to George...takes a while to dig...after much hesitation - thumbs up!
heh...wormy you're cutting it mighty fine there, oh traveling wilbury. Congrats on the Euro tour.
But will save a camp stool for you at the opening of Jazzfest, brother. And you ought to be mighty hungry by then for some crustacean style food festing as well.

speaking of Pauls, the Wingspan DVD is a real nice treat
less sap, more filler, lotsa rare footage
and the Driving Rain disc is a really nice piece
funny what love can inspire
The disc has some nice bass playing and even a sitar in open tuning that brings back memories of George... treat yourself

Good to read your comments regards "The Beat Goes On".
I had the pleasure of seeing this concert last Friday night with Mr Chow.
To coin a phrase once used by Donald Fagen "WHAT A NIGHT"
It was FUCKING AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunetly we in Australia are starved of Steely Dan music especially live stuff.
Whenever Steely Dan have done a world tour we have always been omitted. Its like we have leprosy or something or do they still believe we have Kangaroos jumping down the main street of Sydney.
I mean if they can travel to Japan their half way here, but thats beside the point.
The point is "The Beat Goes On" is a group of Australia's finest and best session musicians performing what diehard fans like Mr Chow, myself and others are crying out to see.
Steely Dan Music played LIVE,LOUD,CRISP and CLEAR and if that music is played with PASSION and PERFECTION then that that is a added bonus.
Until now its just been the odd local club one man band variety act with all their computer technology playing either Riki,Do it Again or Reelin' if your lucky, which is about all the mainstream radio plays down here too.(so sad really, how can a band that wins 4 grammies, still keep being ignored by the media).
To "The Beat Goes On" credit they covered just about everything they could in two and a half hours.
Here is the set list from what I can remember....
Babylon Sisters
Gaucho
Bad Sneakers
Black Cow
Josie
Peg
Deacon Blues
Green Earings
Don't Take Me Alive
My Old School
Reelin' in the Years ( AIA Version )
Riki
New Frontier
Trans Island Skyway
Tomorrows Girls
Book of Liars
Jack of Speed ( Awesome )
What a Shame About Me
Janie Runnaway
Cousin Dupree
FM
Hey 19
Don't Take Me Alive
Kid Charlemange
then finished with
Night By Night
Black Friday
So as you can see if they can play all this to perfection these guys are no amateurs.
Seeing something like this has injected a new lease of life into me regards Steely Dan.
I have been a fanatic for some 27 years or so but when I heard the
re vamped Reelin' in the Years from AIA my first thoughts were "what the fuck is this?", but after hearing and seeing it performed live it was awesome.
To sit there and be mesmerized by the percussionist watching him perform his magic, reaching for every little trick in his bag ( boy he was kept busy ), to the guitarist, horns, keyboard solos and what about the double drum solo ( yes there were 2 drummers on stage just like the old days ) on Night by Night it just about lifted the roof off the house.
It certainaly was a night to remember,
Perhaps one day I might be lucky enough to see the real thing live but until then I am quite content to see the next best thing
"THE BEAT GOES ON"
Hi there ...
Steviedan - I forgot to tell you that the horn interlude that I was refering to is from Gaslighting Abbie, but I assumed that you would know what the 1st track of 2VN was and figure that out ...
Also, I thought the demo version would only let you access the 1st track of a CD. Sometimes the software is discounted down from $50 to $35. I missed the boat on the discount and bought in anyway, and I am glad to have it as part of my "musical tool kit" when you really need something like that, it is good to already have it up and running, as you know, "Oh, Metal Transcriptionist". Please e-mail me. I can't seem to find you that way. For others who might be interested in the SlowGold software, go to www.worldwidewoodshed.com because that is where you'll find it.
Mr. Chow -- thank you very much for the e-mail address for Kere Buchanan from "The Beat Goes On ..."). I am fairly amazed to hear that the 2 guitarists played the Kid Charlemagne solo at the same time. Synchronization problems would be easily encountered there, so if these guys pulled it off in true unison, then that is very very impressive. Now I am even more intrigued.
In your post you asked about "Glamour Profession". I have written a chord chart for that song, and it has been e-mailed to the great Howard Wright. He looked it over and gave me a few suggestions, so I think that my chart too has been "Howard-ized". Hey Howard !!! What do you think about that! You are not only a proper noun, but also a gerund !! Tell your grammar !!
Also, I am aware of that harmonics effect in the album version of the Green Earrings guitar solo, but I don't think our guitarist does it. I will ask him if he is interested in doing it (if he is not already). By the time our guitarist is playing his solo (solo #1), I am getting ready for my solo (solo #2), followed by the sax solo (solo #3), which is a lot like Cornelias Bumpus' solo from the live DVD from the Sony Studios from January 2000. Everybody wanted a solo so badly in that song that we strung three solos in a row before going back into the chorus and the Outro section of the song. We use the live ending plus one extra chord which is MY LITTLE SECRET. This is one of my very favorite SD tunes.
Paul from the Danny Steely Orchestra - I sent you an e-mail today. I browsed around on the DSO website. Nice picture (of the Korg - ha ha.) you don't look too bad yourself Squire. In my e-mail to you I failed to mention the San Diego, California USA based SD tribute band which is the darling of this guest book, The Steely Damned. I have never had the pleasure of seeing them live, but a few of my band-mates and friends from both The Steely Fan Band and also from Doctor Wu have. I have a video tape of their New York city performance the week of Steely Dan's induction into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame, but as you know, video tape is not at all like seeing the event in the flesh. I think The Steely Damned is a 15 piece band and they have been hailed as the best the USA has to offer in the Steely Dan tribute band department.
With all of this talk about SD tribute bands, I still feel like I did before I ever knew that this guest book and all of these other SD tribute bands existed - which is - the true test of ANY SD tribute band is to see how their execution of the music stacks up against the original Steely Dan. As close as any of us get we will probably never get completely there. At least the challenge and the journey toward that goal is tons of fun.
To all who read this -- please support your local Steely Dan tribute band (and even a few out-of-town SD trib bands too!)
And I want to thank all those who have come out to see my band, my friend's band and Lovebob's band. You and people like you are the reason we exist at all (at least in public). Even Kathy Berberian knows there's one rulade she can't sing ...
Steveedan, Oh Man, Oh, Man.
Good conversation regarding tributes. Some new passionate voices, too.
Floridavid: Tried your cell number and it says you have it off or are out of the area. I can't make plans if I can't communicate. :-(
I hope you are having a good time in our neck of the woods, though.
(1499) Paul, you have got to be kidding....
Bill: You crack me up bigtime. Watch out St. Al.
The little one is out of town this weekend, so my husband and I managed to see Oceans Eleven. Interesting movie, but huge plot holes in it.
FYI: Email and website addy's up top.
I'd be lying if I said I'm not in desperate straits right now.
You all know about the otterhound counseling service, the Raelian debacle, the HFTCI, etc..., but this time I think I'm really on to something.
Arthur has come out of "hibernation" for the first time since getting out of jail, and he's even got his old Sherman Oaks apartment back- where the whole misunderstanding took place.
Anyway, I'm going to need a lot of money to get this thing on the road and many of you have a chance to get in on the ground floor of this operation!
Lee's water therapy sessions alone are probably going to be very extensive- the rubber tubing involved is quite costly- so I'm appealing to you Steeleye- I mean Steely Dan fans to help me resurrect this authentic rock and/or roll genius.
You all have heard of my remarkable work with such show business legends as Frances Farmer, Syd Barrett, and of course, my treatment of Donny Fagin in the mid 80s- that IS my name mentioned in "North of Hollywood", his way of thanking me no doubt- well I KNOW I can get Arthur Lee and the LOVE band back on top, if I only had the financial backing!
That's where you people come in.
But you're probably asking "what do I get in return?"
Well that's where my latest idea for a service (this is a service economy after all)comes in.
Here's how it works:
I solve some of the great enigmas in rock and/or roll history, and you, if you're sufficiently impressed, shower me with money!
Alright, let's not tarry any longer, the first mystery, perhaps the greatest mystery of all: What does the title of the Chicago song "25 or 6 to 4 mean?
Many rock and/or roll scholars all over the world have puzzled over this for literally centuries and not come up with the answer.
Is it the statement of some obscure ratio that only this rock and/or roll band was privvy to?
Is it some kind of key to the secret of life that only the Moody Blues (don't worry, they're coming up soon!)knew about?
No, my friends. The song is simply about a rock and/or roll songwriter trying to come up with some ideas for a song and the hour is getting late!
25 or 6 to 4 means that it is twenty five or (twenty)six minutes to 4:00am!
So there! I know. You're all shaking your heads in disbelief that a person as skilled as I am in the healing arts can also solve most of the really impotent questions in the universe. Well, don't just waste that feeling of inferiority you have towards me, dig in to your pockets and give- give to me, and before you know it, LOVE and Arthur Lee will be on the road again, with me as their producer/adviser/manager etc...!
Steveedan - I'm not sure if "The Beat Goes On" has a website, but I'm sure that Kere Buchanan, who organises the whole thing would love to hear from you to discuss each of your bands/projects etc. He's at: keza@optusnet.com.au
The charts he writes are extremely close to the original. As I mentioned, he truly "does a Howard". I asked him about Glamour Profession, as it's a personal favourite of mine, however, he suggested that 'there are some songs that work best in the studio..." If you could let him know about your version (I'm assuming you may have done the hard work here) - there'd be a lot of even more pleased music lovers here (if that's possible after Friday night's concert!!)
On the night, the Kid Charlemagne solos were not only note perfect, but performed by two amazing guitarists (Goh & Northcote) simultaneously! Rex Goh wasn't even looking at what he was doing, but rather watching Pete Northcote to ensure that they were precisely together. Imagine it - we were 5 metres away. The effect was incredible - the standing ovation (mid-song)was an almost not a good enough reception. Every nuance was replicated perfectly. We were entranced.
Talking about Green Earrings, the only (if I could call it a minor, minor disappointment), was that we didn't hear that orgasmic use of the harmonic register mid guitar solo. This is very important for Green Earrings. Do you guys hit that note?
I won't go into too much detail on each song, but we also heard brilliance when they performed "Book of Liars" and "Jack of Speed".
Anyway, please contact Kere, as I'm sure something good will come out of it. Chart-swapping to say the least!, if not special guesting - feel like a trip to our sun-drenched shores?
Oh, and Paul Shotan, thanks so much for your post. I made the classical music point last time as well. Good stuff!! It's interesting that Mozart often left gaps in his music for the performers to improvise. How's that for cool? These days, of course, the best interpretation of his music is still playing it note perfect. In 100 years time, it could be that "Classic" Steely Dan is played just as note-perfect.
Cheers,
Mr Chow.
Dear Gwen,
Why am I calling you Gwen when you obviously are not
Gwen Stefani. I'm sure that you're not her because
Gwen Stefani would NOT be running Windows 98.
Gwen would be running some kind of supercharged
dual-processor setup with one of those pink translucent
keyboards and a whole bunch of flashy lights.
But just on the astronomically off-chance that you are
actually Gwen Stefani, let me just say one thing...
NO MORE SONGS LIKE "HEY BABY, HEY BABY, HEY BABY, HEY"!
PLEASE GWEN, PLEASE GWEN, PLEASE GWEN, PLEASE!
*MR.BILL KNOCKING HEAD ON DESK REPEATEDLY*
PLEASE GWEN I'M BEGGIN' YA!
:)
Great post Paul...
I did try to grt to your NYE gig in whitly bay.. but the babysitters well you know.
How did it go?
See you in chat soon again
Duncan
(feeling a little happier today)
Wow !!! Finally, I get to correspond with another Steely keyboardist. What a treat. Paul, I agree with everything you said. We don't do a look-alike presentation either. We simply work hard to recreate the music and at times add a little new interpretation where we think it might be appropriate to do so.
Bad Sneeekz - I work on new projects all the time. I play lots of studio sessions at the request of my more serious music friends. I make my living in financial-based services. Playing Steely Dan music for me is what highly competitive tennis on the weekends might be for others (or touch football, or pick-up softball or basketball ...).
It is serious, but it is also serious fun.
Mr. Steviedan - I did buy the "full" version of SlowGold, and have only used it a few times since I did that, but it is true that you can burn CDs to be able to access any song by placing the song in the first or second track position. What sold me on this piece of software so long ago was that I put in my Two Against Nature CD and played the horn interlude into SlowGold, slowed it down learned it, and I also sped it up and played it to a faster tempo, so that when I played it in the proper tempo, it was easy to do. And of course, I have since forgotten how to play it. But I knew it well once ...
I tried sending you an email, but was unsuccessful. Please send me one so that I can tell you more stuff about this without boring everyone else (furthur than I have already done). Thanks
Steveedan
It's almost as if I'm talking directly to YOU, huh Grandpa Bill?
Here's my bid on the dilly-o. Some of my recent faves and not in order of significance:
1) Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Lose
2) Beck - Midnight Vultures
3) Fuel - Something Like Human
4) Alicia Keys - Songs In A Minor
5) Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
6) Dave Matthews Band - The Lilywhite Sessions
7) Dido - No Angel
8) Incubus - Make Yourself
9) David Gray - White Ladder
10) Eve - Scorpion
Of course, Rock Steady is fucking great - but I suspect you know that already.
Paul
I've no problem with anything you say - I think my point was a debate on interpretation V duplication of the Dan (re: your point on classical music too)- I've enjoyed many an evenings fun playing the music too.
Eg What's your opinion on the merits of having to use a Ł6000 hand made 6-string Fodera bass to get the authentic Anthony Jackson sound (and yes it does make a hell of a difference !!!) ???
ie where does the quest for purity end and clinical obsession start ???
PS When are you coming to Scotland ???
Hi folks
Just my 2 cents worth on the "should they, shouldn't they.." tribute band debate. First of all I come clean and confess I am in one..The Danny Steel Orchestra...clearly 'Dan : a 12-piece semi pro band based in Birmingham UK.
Why do we do what we do? Why don't we write and perform our own material?
Well we're all pretty well mature folks (for that read old!). We've all played in a wide range of bands all our lives, put up with playing boring, inane, or plain uninspiring stuff too long, tried the writing business, had no interest, ability, talent, luck or incentive. Always appreciated the total superiority of Becker & Fagen's work.loved to hear it, loved to play it, would have loved to be able to hear it live a little more often than 14 years in between gigs here in The UK!
There comes a point when you say fxxk it! I'm going to play for my own pleasure and I'm going to choose the best there is, the most demanding, the most rewarding. I don't give a damn if it doesn't pay...or else I'd now be in an ABBA Queen, Beatles, Eagles etc etc tribute. We all decided in the absence of the real thing we'd get together a bunch of great musicians who were like minded and set ourselves the task of recreating the recorded versions of the classic Steely Dan tracks. You may argue that that's sad....but remebere not everyone is a writer....some folks are just plain good musicians and once you've heard the masters at work you know there's NO WAY you'll, ever even approach those heights. Horses for courses ? After all no-one disputes the value of a symphony orchestra performing the great works do they? Are those players berated for living off the backs of Mozart, Beethoven etc? No way. We play the music of Steely Dan because we love it and so do so many Brits too, and we want to bring it to them LIVE, local and affordably. No-one's even suggesting that the real thing wouldn't be more welcome but it ain't going to happen too often is it? We do all we can to promote Don & Walt's music, we bring new audiences to the music and keep the flame glowing for the die-hards. As for sitting on a beach on the proceeds....dream on! We are a semi pro 12 piece and we are lucky to take home Ł20 / $30 after a weekend's work travelling 500 miles, humping around a huge pa, performing a 2 hour show, sleeping on a floor and all the hassle of that in reverse. There is no money in Steely Dan tributes. The audiences for The 'Dan are a minority, the material is not commercial (thank G!)...it is plain hard work and we've probably put more money into it than we'll ever pull out, but money is not the issue, never was and never will be...it's done in respect to and love for this great great music......no dreams of fame and fortune, no ego feeding, no delusions at all...just ordinary guys willing and able to do justice to this magical stuff.
Please support your Dan bands, wherever you are. they're doing it for love.
Come see us...say hello, give us a call and we'll try to get you in for free as a first timer even...we need your support ...always.
Thanks and sorry for the rant..I get very passionate about anything Dan!!!
ps we don't do the lookalike / karaoke / cabaret thing neither!!! Just the music pure and as near to the real thing as possible but with room for the guys to strut their stuff now and again.....a very exciting combination.

Hey guys
Check out the Super Furry Animals "The man don't give a f***" from the "Outspaced" CD if you want to hear how to use a classic SD sample in a completely different context -
As for all this tribute band discussion - as someone who has made a living from original music for over twenty years, as musician, engineer, producer and FOH sound man, my opinions are divided as to the merits of trying to perfectly reproduce other peoples work.
Sure, I love the songs as much as the musicians who are doing this, and as a player I would have to take my hat off to any guitarist who can play "kid Charlemagne" note for note, any bass player who can attempt the vibe of "Glamour profession", Keyboard man who can get inside the changes of "Gaucho" etc etc - However, it does amaze me that players with this amount of talent would not be better utilising it towards making their own new music using the one-off genius of Don, Walt, Larry, Gary, Roger etc as the inspiration to take the flag onto the next level.
Sure the art of forging a Rembrant may make you enough money to sail off to the Carribean for the rest of your life, but would you be happy on that beach with the knowledge that it could have been you who would be remembered 200 years from now ???
Just a thought - Respect to all you guys anyway and peace to all the musical family of the world.
partial retraction: "roxy & elsewhere" may be tied with "make a jazz noise here". gina, i agree with you and clas about "village of the sun". standout piece...
canadian music query: okay, so slap me with a slab of back bacon, but i don't think shania is horrible (i saw her with my daughter and it was a nice presentation), but have you heard of the rankins or leahy ? there's two great bands you've never heard of right there. if you depend on mainstream radio for your listening oeuvre then a limp bizkit is all you get...
okay good doc. uncle on the global warming issue. i guess we'll all just accept that fossil fuel emissions are harmless.
get well miss cara...
stevee, the free demo for now. did you register ? the ten second loop thing will be limiting, but the first two song limit seems surmountable by re-recording to another disc, track 1 or 2. advise.
Hi Steviedan --
You are welcome for the SlowGold tip. This can really be a useful program, as you said. Did you get the full version, or just go with the free demo?
Thank you very much for letting me know that Chick Corea's The Leprechaun exists on a CD. Now I gotta go find it out there.

Well Hello Mr. Chow from Down Under --
Please get us a website for this Steely Dan tribute band that you have mentioned were the best ever. Here in the Western World we have a number of SD trib bands whom would be interested in seeing how "The Beat Goes On - The Songs Of Steely Dan" band compare with one or more of our own.
It appears that San Diego, California's The Steely Damned band is the best the USA has to offer. I myself am involved with 3 Los Angeles, California-based SD trib bands (1 of which is still in development but shaping up rather nicely). There is also Stealin' Dan from the upper New York state area and also in the UK there is Nearly Dan. I want to hear some of the songs that "The Beat Goes On" band plays and see how it compares to the other bands' material that I am familiar with.
In regard to your comment about wanting to hear the original versions, and original solos verses newer interpretations of Steely Dan songs, my opinion about that is this -- I have always considered myself a purist when it comes to my approach to other people's music. Before I try to change or interpret a Steely Dan song, I do my best to learn the songs exactly as they originally appeared on the studio albums. Now that there exists live material to listen to and learn, I now have the choice of mastering the studio version, or one of the live live versions of the songs. In my case, being the fanatic that I am, I learn every version that I can get my hands on. In the SD tribute bands we take a vote as to what version of a song to learn for performance purposes.
A perfect example of this would be either Reelin' In The Years, or The Royal Scam. In the first case, Reelin' has been completely re-vamped on the Alive In America CD. The Royal Scam live uses more horns to play the recurring theme and the drums are much more out in front.
So faced with these choices, what should a performer do?
I suggest following your own heart. The only rule that I would try to include in all of this is to pay strict attention to detail and to quality. Also, if the opportunity arrises for a solo to be played that could reach out into brand new territory, it is my position that the solo should be played with a nod to the original. Certain songs (in my opinion) need to have the original solos. Kid Charlemagne is one (although Drew Zing's solo in that song on the Alive In America CD ain't bad!).
But for a song like Green Earrings, I have three different solos besides the guitar solo from the studio version to pick through. On the Alive In America CD, Warren Bernhart played a piano solo, on the 1996 tour, John Beasley played a piano solo, and on the 2000 tour, Ted Baker played a piano solo. If I had multiple recordings of other 1996 concerts (besides just Manassass, VA on 7-21-96), or other 1993, 1994, or the 2000 tour, I would have half-a-dozen Green Earrings piano solos to cull through while I figure out how I would like to ultimately construct my own solo.
This can drive a piano player nuts. (Can't you tell?)
So, my approach is to expose myself to as many different Green Earrings piano solos as I can get my hands on and to boil them down into what I want to do. My solos will certainly sound different than the ones played by these great keyboardists, but I can guarantee that whatever I play will be in the proper context and feel of the song, and it will follow the terrain of that solo space in the song.
Having said all of that --- please let us know how we can contact "The Beat Goes On" SD trib band from down under, OK? Thank you.
A couple of years ago, I started an argument on the guestbook about what the listener wanted to hear when they attended live concerts of a favourite band. Obviously, I used the example of attending a live Steely Dan Concert.
My argument, (which I lost convincingly!) was that what the listener will occasionally want from the band is the exact sounds / music from the original recording. They will want to hear what they know and expect from Steely Dan. To be able to see first hand, a talented guitarist letting rip with an exact version of Larry Carlton’s solos from Kid Charlemagne during a performance of that tune on stage in front of you is bloody exhilarating! After all, not many people have “seen” this as the original was produced in the studio.
Now, I accept the arguments about wanting to hear something new and creative from the band on stage, however I have to say I remain committed to my preference for at least one “as recorded” night after the best live concert in years last night from “The Beat Goes On” – The Songs of Steely Dan, at ‘The Basement” here in Sydney.
With 16 brilliant musicians on stage during the night (including 5 singers, 2 drummers, 2 lead guitarists, 2 bass guitarists and one each of Tenor Sax, Keyboard, Trombone, Trumpet & Percussionist), we were witness to the talents of Rex Goh and Peter Northcote (Larry Carlton was floating above them in an awe inspired ‘out of body’ experience), keyboardist Bill Risby, as well as Victor Rounds and Nick Sinclair. Also the magnificent horn trio of Andy Bickers, Stewart Kirwan and Anthony Kable. Gordon Ritmeister, the amazing drumming sensation together with Kere Buchanan doing their magnificent impressions of Hodder and Porcaro. Kere spends huge amounts of time “doing a Howard” with his arrangements.
This was one golden night of Steely Dan and I would bet the family jewels on them beating any other attempt at producing the ‘exact’ sound. The mood was uplifting. The crowded club was raucous with excitement, and these guys are gaining an amazing following.
We would love to see SD down here sometime (can guarantee them a full house or three), but until then, they’re really already here.
It truly was a case of:
“Close your eyes and you’ll be there;
It’s everything they say;
The end of a perfect day”
Thanks guys & thanks fanofdan for joining the party.
Mr Chow.
St. Al,
This is fun. I can't wait till I have some more freetime
so I can fly out to Seattle. I'll follow you around
and wait till you go into a store or whatever. Then
ill change all your car mirror positions and turn your
license plates upside down. I'll replace your dog with
an exact replica. I'll plant plastic trees on your
property. I'll go around your nieghborhood acting really
bizzare and tell every one my name is Billy Beemer.
You see this is the problem. I'm the youngest in my
family. I have two older brothers and an older sister.
Driving them insane used to be fun but they've become
pretty accustomed to it by now and well it's just
ain't as much fun as it used to be.
But driving you insane is really fun, it's opened up
a whole new world to me. I feel a new sense of purpose.
It's gonna be great! What a long strange trip it will
be buddy... are you ready for the ride? :)
St. Al,
Is it true that LMAO means Leave My Ass Out of this?
If the system should happen to throw a person out
of chat, would this be a case of Premature De-chatulation?
Ok so you did'nt like my cooking analogy... I mean it
was all I could think of at the time.
Did anyone ever tell you that it's fun to drive you crazy?
:)
Bill: WRONG! You're theory is all wet. Quit with the analogies already. It is my contention the only thing more subjective than music is abstract art. You can't compare food for chrissakes, and even if you did the example you use has more to do with CHEMISTRY than art!
Again I ask. Who's standards?
The fact is you like certain music groups. These groups, for one reason or another touched you in ways no others have been able to since. As far as you're concerned these bands are YOUR standard for good music. That's fine, and I'd venture to say they are probably good choices. But back to my original point... You might surprise yourself if you didn't wear your standards on your sleeve. There's PLENTY of great music out there. Check out Duckys list. Most of those artists are less than 5 years old and all of them are worth a listen.
StAl
Someone ask about great music since 1988? The following folks (at least) make it onto my list (at least) ... listed in no particular order of importance or degree of familiarity/obscurity:
Bjork
Cibo Matto
Macy Gray
Jamiroquai
Medeski Martin & Wood
Gorillaz
Maktub
Crystal Method
Fatboy Slim
Meshell Ndegeocello
That's not even including a bunch of folks various of y'all have already mentioned, but since you've mentioned them already, I don't have to. :-)
/the Mam'zelle
(you keep your ears to the ground, you get rocks in your head)
St. Al,
Ok so I included Oasis and Shania Twain on the list
of 10 good bands/artists since 1988, but I was running
out of people dammit! I had no idea who to add to that
list after the first 3 or 4 artists or so.
I was desparate!
Now, your contention that established standards of
excellence cannot be applied to the various forms
of art is just not true nor logical. Of course they
can.
Lets look at the culinary art field for a moment.
While cooking is certainly an art, there are certain
ingredients which just don't belong together. Like
tabasco sauce just does not belong in the list of
ingredients for pecan pie. Oranges do not belong
in clam chowder. These are generally accepted
statements of fact which were borne out through
centuries of experimentation and trial and error.
Therefore if someone places tabasco sauce in a
pecan pie mix we can rightfully say that this is
a misguided, improper thing to do. It's bad form.
Also I notice that a master chef will take great
pride in how the dish is eventually displayed and
presented. If the dish is presented in a
stylistically interesting way, it will be something
of great interest to the person who eventually
recieves it. BUT, if the dish is prepared in a
sloppy manner, with no regard for astetic quaility
then it will be viewed as a mess.
You see standards are being adhered to, and those
standards will be evaluated by the recipient of
the item. While there is some degree of subjectivity,
the basic standards must be satisfied. Therefore,
art is not completely objective. Art does not exist
within a vaccuum. It can be judged based on it's
ingredients. Just like everything else in the world.
Dano, steviedan, and all my nice danbuddies...
I now have a second cold this season. Drats. The first turned to bronchitis and lasted 3.5 weeks. I work with the elderly (think _Aqualung_, my friend) and I wonder if wearing a respirator mask is going to be my fate...
The local beau has been keeping me busy. That might change.
Haven't decided about New Orleans yet (Hi wormy, aja). I can drive down last minute should the notion hit me. But for now I am fighting the urge to book a trip to NYC to see Jonatha Brooke at Irving Plaza on my BD. Hi to Aus and Malc and Pete you others in the vicinity.

I think you must designate between "taste" and "popular culture's forced feeding of the masses".
Taste can be judged from one's one sense of value, appreciating and evaluating a particular medium/style, and hence the artisans, or hacks, who practice it. This can also be said of the visual arts as well.
PC's Force Feeding certainly lends to the debate, however, it does not even remotely apply the numerous, less popular developments and growth/regression of an artistic medium. PC is a constantly moving - if not evolving - phenomenon
Bill - whose taste I share only partially - finds nothing, or little, of value post 1998, that demonstrates his taste, yet one can make the argument against him nonetheless, based on their individual values.
To say that St. Al has a broader mind is, to me, obvious. And yet Bill remains undaunted in his opinions, which by themselves may even contain kernels of truth.
I would never say that popular culture has "evolved", but rather, merely maintained itself and broadened its reach. Does that make it better? I don't think so. It has diluted variety.
Taste is acquired - how you acquire it is really up to you. How you judge it depends on where you came.

SCIENCE
St.Al: Isn't since about differeing point of views - trying to prove someone or their ideas wrong. The truth is slowly revealed by mountains of data and the art + science of criticism.
Case in point. most people believe in "cataclysmic" global warming despite a substantial and logical evidence to the contrary...like the satellite and balloon data that indicate no significant changes in average tropospheric temperature... or this one hot off the press:
http://www.weather.com/newscenter/topstories/workoutside/marine/020118xmarxantarcticaice.html
St. Al: That opens up the Pandora's box, eh? Is all art relative?
Are the works of Robert Ludlum = Shakespeare?
or P' Diddy = Duke Ellington?
or Yoko Ono = Picasso?
Who's to say which Black Cow is better? Is there any science behind the academic field of criticism? Is there any valid objectivity in evaluating musicanship or literary style and substance? Are the 100s of years of articles, theses and dissertations on the science of art criticism just so much hot air? Is the "everything is relative" just part of the age (pre 9/11) of self-absorption and promotion? ...or is that simply Cousin Dupree (everything with my relatives)?
Am I or anybody on a ukelele drunk with a lampshade over the head = Larry Carlton?
Do years of apprenticeship, practice, inspiration, perspiration work only if you're stripping at the MTV awards?
Is stealing other artists finished products, overlaying with bad poetry, spastically delivered = Beethoven?
"If you can't communicate...then shut up." - Tom Lehrer
(paraphrasing) "If music went the way of technology, we'd all be listening to Debussy." - Walter Becker
Bill: It is my opinion you can't appropriately apply your philosophy of using "standards" to judge an art form. What if I think your "standards" suck? After all, you did include Oasis in your list. And someone else, maybe you but I don't remember, included Shania fucking Twain. This method of thinking is flawed because art is subjective. Technology and science is not.
Ok, I'm done.
StAl
St. Al,
Ok, i partially agree with you. We have to keep an open
mind when it comes to music...to a point. You see certain
standards of excellence have been set. Like it or not
the job of a new artist is to review these standards and
try to match, or preferrably, to exceed them. Isn't that
the way it works in all other fields of endeavor?
Let's take the aerospace industry for an example. A standard
has been set has it not? Men have landed on the moon. The
next step is to put a man (or woman) on Mars no? The next
logical step is to reach the furthest planet in our solar
system, followed by trying to reach the nearest star.
This a logical, linear progression of events. We do not
put a man on the moon and then start over by trying to
invent the wheel. This would be regressive not progressive.
And herein lies the central theme of my argument, I find
much (but not all) of the modern post 90's stuff to be
regressive. It niether matches nor exceeds the prior
standard of excellence. It is therefore rejected out
of hand. Not worth the time.
Again, there are quite a few artists who are at least
attempting to measure up to the icons of years past and
my hat is off to them. All I want is to have that same
feeling I got when I first heard the AJA LP. Is that too
much to ask? :)
Bill: All I have to say is "Gilligan's Island"
Television is what it is and has been for many years.
I say kill it.
No, I'm not picking on you.
StAl
Bill: Just because Dylan wrote it doesn't make it right. Adopting that philosophy is only an excuse to remain close minded. In principal I agree with the greater concept of choosing a position and sticking with it, however, applying this credo to music is plain silliness.
A rolling stone gather no moss...
I possessed a similar attitude throughout the 80's. During that decade I found most of the music sterile and vapid, so I turned to the 60's and 70's to help me through this horrible period in popular music. I figured that no one could do it as good as The Beatles or The Stones, so what's the point. I found that I wore this attitude on my sleeve -- to the point my mind had simply shut down and I could no longer appreciate anything that wasn't produced before 1980. Sometime around 1990 I met a person who really turned my head around. He was a diehard metalhead -- a form of music I eschewed for years. Once again, if it wasn't Black Sabbath or Zep, what's the point? He introduced me to bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Janes Addiction, Soundgarden, etc. From that point on I realized there was plenty of great music out there if you only opened your mind and listened without (or as few) pre-conceived notions as possible.
Frankly, even in hindsight I don't think my dislike of the music of the 80's is (or was) far off the mark, however, I'm wondering if I hadn't been such a narrow-minded putz if I wouldn't have appreciated more of it.
Somehow I doubt it.
It's tough to compare modern music to history. I say it's plain unfair even though we all do it. Try not to and you may see things a little different.
Pat
St. Al : Post 1494's got your name on it.
On the subject of standards and the lack of them,
it occurs to me that most modern entertainment is
geared towards morons. Take the World Wrestling
Federation for instance; who exactly are these people
trying to entertain? How about shows like, Survivor,
or Rikki Lake, or Jenny Jones, or Rende-view, or
Blind Date, or three-quarters of the stuff on the
WB network. I mean are there really that many stupid
people in the world? It's scary to think so...
I have quite a few channels on cable. I've got the
Optimum package, whatever that is, but it's quite
a few channels needless to say. Take a guess how
many of those channels I watch consistently...
I'd guess maybe six or seven channels. Mostly I
watch the Discover channel, A&E, Cspan1 & 2, PBS,
HBO(when they're not into porn-see above), and the
standard public channels. Just a few channels out of
all the availiable channels to watch. The reason for
this is that the other channels are basically filled
with tripe. They've apparently run out of ideas
and/or class entertainers and have decided to resort
to low-rent circus-act programming.
The ills that plague television these days are the
same ones that plague the music industry. They've
just plumb run out of ideas and now they're just
going to resort to any stupid thing that will grab
your attention. Things with "EXTREME" in front of
the name seem to do well. Pretty soon we'll have
extreme cooking shows and extreme home remodeling.
It's dumb isn't it? If you think so then you are a
dying breed my friend. Welcome to the future.
Here's your coloring book and crayons.
Jay Dubz - and I saw Zappa in Stockholm, must have been late 80's. Great shit. Two singers, they did "I am the Walrus", that was just beautiful.
Hi Gina - have you seena?

stevie - well if David just follow my advices... I hope he can sing, no he doesn't have to sing, I forgot, they have this Auto-Tune-device in Pro Tools, don't they? On the other hand, I saw him in a movie where he and Brad Pitt was doing some great action, a kind of Road Movie, serie-killers and such. I liked that one.
Lars - I'm going to change to tight leatherpants and go for a hairtransplantation, look for updates :-)
Mu - maybe you're right. But those albums, Mad Man, and the others before Yellow Brick, that was pretty new stuff at the time. I remember getting high on it (the only reason I din't smoke my High School Diploma was I never got one).
Jay Dubz - you were THERE! That's great! I love the way Zappa communicate with the audience.

jdubz, glad you got to catch the twain film. did you feel simultaneously moved by his wisdom, humor and hardships, yet repelled by his excess materialism and the priviledged whining quality in family communiques' ? i was pulled back and forth, but eventually prioritized the former...

paul, clas, jd, and zappites alike, roxy would be possibly my favorite zappa out of the scores i have and jd was THERE ! how come you didn't get in the dance contest, dub ?
now for these messages...
St. Al,
Bob Dylan wrote;
George Lewis told the Englishman, the Italian, and
the Jew, "You can't open your mind boys to every
conceivable point of view..."
Does anyone know what this means?
Class?
Ok, you in the back....let's have it.
It means that you can't always agree with every
last philosopy that exists.
That's Right! It means that sooner or later you
have to select a philosophy from all the availiable
philosophies that exist (or invent one of your own...)
and decide that this philosophy is true, and believe it.
A person just can't have a myriad of disparate philosophies
and remain completely sane. Therefore people are bound
to disagree on certain subjects from time to time.
Now when it comes to music, there are quite a few
philosophies. What sounds good to one person might
sound god-awful to the next. Now gansta-rap aside
(which, lets face it, ain't even music at all),
I find myself liking certain aspects of many kinds of
music. This is the reason why I like Steely Dan so much,
they mix things up. You never know what they might
decide to include in one of thier songs. From obscure
instruments to some arcane musical genre of the past,
Steely Dan has it all.
You see I am a very spoiled person. I grew up in the
70's. The music of the 60's was still being played
every day on the radio. The artists that I grew up
with are the icons of today. It is for this reason
that I have a hard time accepting any of the post
90's music as good. I just don't see anyone from
this period who can fill the shoes of Don and Walt,
or James Taylor, or Bob Dylan, or Eric Clapton,
or Jimi Hendrics, or Pink Floyd, or Alan Parsons,
or The Beatles, or Roy Orbison, or Carol King,
or The Rolling Stones, or The Doors... shall I
go on?
And this is the problem you see, my standards are
very high, and I won't lower them. I won't lower
them for Snoop Doggy Dog, or Busta Rhymes, or the
Eminem kid who can even spell his own name, or
Brittany Spears, or the Backstreet Boys, or N'Sync,
or any of the techno dance acts, or any of the
low-rent, cheap-ass acts that the jerkoffs from
the record companys want to throw at me.
Still, I do from time to time find some music
nowadays that I feel is quality music that
should stand the test of time. LP mentioned
The Cranberries, I really like The Cranberries,
they're very talented and thier music should
hang around for a while. Just don't try and
give me any Marylin Manson and tell me that
he's a valid artist because I will then have
to compare his work against the standard which
was set by those who came before. I believe we
all know what the result of that will be :)
P.S. St. Al, I won't be 40 for another month
and a half. Does that qualify me as a grandpa?

The NAMM Show kicked off today in Anaheim, California, right next to "The Happiest Place On Earth", you know, The In-N-Out Burger near Disneyland.
I have it on good authority that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was in attendance today. I am guessing that he was window-shopping, but, not for thermo-nuclear weaponry this time ...
Whoever posted that hysterical classic stuff from The Hollywood Squares, I loved it. If there is a website that has more of these jokes, please let us know.
JayDubs - great to speak with you in real time tonight. I fear that I too may miss Floridavid, who get's to Anaheim tomorrow, as I will not be going to the NAMM Show myself. So Dave, if you are reading this, please check your email while you are here in Los Angeles and CALL ME, so that we can see if we might still be able to get together. Angel, if this interests you also, please let me know.
And finally, eLLe, what was that a picture of? That red thing, I mean.

Lars ~ Actually the diploma I smoked had a gym sock rolled up in it! Where've you been livin', Reseda?
C - visited your very instructive site on "how to become a rock 'n roll star". In the end (under that charming pic) you state that nothing can't possibly go wrong. Well, I learned in "the old" recipe that "... when hair's combed right and your pants are tight it's gonna be all right". Look at that hair! ..tight pants???? Is it really possible to have success?
is anyone out there mourning the loss of the x-files at the end of this season or have you all turned to the "other side" and started watching alias on sunday nights already? i admit i watch it during commercials.
so, in the season finale will
anyone get killed off?
anyone get abducted for good?
anyone ride off in the sunset?
anyone new have bumps on their necks? black oil in their eyes?
will there be a follow-up movie?
will david duchovney come back for the finale?
is krycek really dead?
will it be cheesy, will it be nice, woops, dropping into a dinah shore tune there, hold the phone!
sorry, the x-files sites are filled, can't get in
Bill bill bill...
One of my favorite discussions is the topic of "today's music." Seems many of you old fogies don't appreciate the plethora of fantastic music produced since the late 80's. Rather than list the 100's of newer artists that have contributed in a positive way, let's just say there is more to music than, well, Steely Dan...
Oasis ain't one of them, but that's my not so humble opinion. More of British drivel if you ask me. BUT, that's not the point, because I know there are many who really enjoy the band. You see, even with bands like the Ramones and Oasis, I see the talent. Well, let me rephrase that. I understand why people might find their music worth listening to. Snoop Dogg included.
So come on GRAMPS, lift a skirt and live a little! (I refuse to use those stupid little "emoticons" but if I did I'd insert one that looks like the devil smiling right here).

C & Jaydubz - Roxy and you were there ... Wow!! Did you smoke your high-school diploma too ?
additions to post- post- post-modern funked up music:
Ben Folds Five
Ben Folds
Fear of Pop
Steely Dan 2 (just look at the cover)
All the Lilith Fair chicks
All the grunge bands
Gin Blossoms
Neil Finn
Christian McBride
Joshua Redman
C: I know Bennie is SUPPOSED to have a cheesy fake live sound with hand claps and everything - but Elton pulls the melodramatic echo trick too often in the early dayz. That's one of least fav tracks on the classic Yellow Brick Road LP...It seems like Bennie and the Jests led to the road of excess and self-parody...
Looking forward to hearing your new tune...
my 2 cents~ Gwen gets to marry Bush guitarist/Gavin.. soon, she can't be all that bad..PLUS..
Plus she always wins "Best Bindy Dot" award in my books.
Neil Young a thinking mans' Dylan?
that's a joke right?
Both are greats of modern day R'n'R, R'n'B..both still "working"
Both, not-too-shabby lyricists..LOL!!!!! to say the least.
I don't go looking for it.. it just comes to me naturally.
cheesey peas
thanks jjeff..bro!
hey, i'll take a stab at best bands since, wait let me scroll up, oh yeah, 1988:
1. Beck
2. Cake
3. Cranberries
4. Tribe (a local Boston band that broke up after one great release)
5. Bare Naked Ladies (hope we can still be friends, but they are a great band)
6. Oasis, yeah, sure
7. if i can do solo artists, i'll add Joan Osborne
8. Sneaker Pimps
9. another soloist - Susan Tedeschi
10. new artist John Mayer (sp)
Beck being the top
I know you're out there.. ....

Clas ~ Next time you're in LA, I'll give you the grand tour of infamous Zappa locales. "Roxy & Elsewhere" is a kick-ass album and has sentimental value to me, since I was there two of the nights...great shows! My favorite early '70s Zappa lineup (first tour of '73 - Hollywood Palladium) was to support "Over-nite Sensation" ~
Frank Zappa: guitar/vocals
George Duke: keys/vocals
Jean-Luc Ponty: violin
Ian Underwood: keys/winds/reeds
Ruth Underwood: tuned percussion
Tom Fowler: bass
Bruce Fowler: trombone
Sal Marquez: trumpet/vocals
Ralph Humphrey: drums

St. Al,
Damn..., name 10 good bands/artists that have formed
since 1988? Shit why not just ask for a working formula
for cold fusion while we're at it? I know that I can't
do it but I'll try to rattle off a few artists that
might be any good. Here goes...
1 Sheryl Crow
(she seems to be the real deal)
2. Lenny Kravitz
(Lenny could have held his own in the old days)
3. Green Day
(Simple stuff but at least they've got some punch)
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
(some of thier stuff is pretty good)
5. Weezer
(not bad for a garage band)
6. Foo Fighters
(hey, why not?)
7. Garbage
(hey I did'nt pick the name ok?)
8. Shania Twain
(runnin' out of artists here...)
9. Oasis
(Oasis? oh alright, Oasis)
10. No Doubt
(Yes, No Doubt... They've done some pretty good
stuff but they're latest song isn't the best of
what they've got to offer.)
The rest of what the music world has offered us
in the last 15 years of so has been downright
garbage. They've offered us ghetto music in the
form of Gangsta Rap or they've offered us no-talent
garage bands.
And why you might ask, Why do they offer us this
junk? The answer is simple...IT'S CHEAP TO PRODUCE!
There are no Victor Feldman's on a Snoop Doggie Dog
release. There are no virtuoso guitarists like
Larry Carlton out there working with Nsynch.
It's fast food. It's McDonalds. It's disposable.
Like everything in our world these days seems to
be, engineered for the the fast buck, disposable.
Very little of lasting quality. The vast majority of
the music released these days is indicative of the
overall dumbing down of our society in general,
or as Walter Becker put it, "a long, slow, mental,
moral, spiritual, decline..."
But hey, even in the midst of this I was able to
pick out 10 artists worthy of a mention. That should
at least get me a slap on the back no?
Took the kids with their school group to the women's B-Ball game last night. By the time I got home from work to take the kids to meet the bus - there's was no time for dinner. After we were seated I went to the concession stand with just $3 in my pocket. The only offering that comprised even a portion of meal for less than $3 was a soft Preztel, and a tiny cup of orange stuff in a primordial semi-gel state that passed for cheese.
I didn't choke but the team did.
...In fairness, the Kansas State team was huge:
"Hey! Check Number 3 for a Y chromosome!!!"
"Carla (the programs unwisely listed the refs. names), that CAN'T be a foul, we're too short!!!"
A college kid beside us got in a good one: "Scott (the only male ref of the three). I can't believe you called a foul!!! You're supposed to be the SUBMISSIVE one!"
Bill: Name 10 bands you like that have formed since, say, 1988. Then I'll believe you...
I like No Doubt's new one. A lot.
Zappa is the shit.

(1461) jjeff: Stealth posting, you don't even give me a chance to answer. :-) Thanks for the kind words. You mean you actually shocked some of the younger generation with that song?
(1469) Paul: Yes, NS is Nova Scotia and yes really Sweeden. Here are the new liner notes to Royal Scam. Not like it is much help.

(1467) Clas: I don't think you want to go to Palmdale, trust me....
(1463) Very funny! :-)
(1462) Ole: Have we lost all of our NYC contacts? It would be nice if someone went to see them and gave us a review.
jjeff, by the way, I'm not sure either about who preceded who in the "rockers who wear suits stakes and sing with beautiful back-up singers" stakes. Just thought Robert Palmer should get a look in. I imagine Bowie was the first one out of the starting blocks.
Later.
Original Hollywood Squares
These are from the days when game show responses were spontaneous and
not scripted like they are now.
Q: If you’re going to make a parachute jump, you should be at least

Those Zappa lyrics are indelibly etched in my brain, as they have been since I was at school in Johannesburg (and that was an age ago).
Just reminiscing about how I discovered Dan. 1st year university in Grahamstown. Had an American friend who presented me with Aja for my 18th birthday. Listened to it but didn't really 'hear' it. Wasn't sure about it at all. But kept listening and suddenly just got it. After that, we were inseperable. The album was my most prized possession and I listened to it at least once day for years. Was going through my vinyl the other night and to my dismay discovered it gone. Sad me. Did find Royal Scam on tape though, a good recording too, so guess what I've been listening to lately. The track "The Royal Scam" is my personal favourite. I don't have any credits. Please will someone let me know who the axeman is on that song. My favourite SD song of all though has got to be "Peg".
Just been listening to Chili Peppers "Roadtrippin". Beautiful ballad, I opine.
jjeff - where's NS - Nova Scotia?
Clas - are you actually in Sweden?
Take care now, y'all
...ginger tea and carrot cake for breakfast. Not starfish and coffee.
Paul: Welcome, man. Robert Palmer was before Bowie and Ferry? As I said, my time line is terrible. 30c! My kinda weather. Pity I can't grow some of your beautiful native flowers. I've tried. They just don't winter over here in N.S. even in a zone 6. Too much freezing and thawing. Love Zappa! You'll find fertile ground for that topic here.
Along with Zappa, Prince continues to be one of the most pirated artists because of so much unreleased material( "I got grooves and grooves up on the shelf"). I haven't heard the latest. Ask Tones about it.
Oleander: Have you read the sequel to The Sparrow, Children of God? I'm doing just that now and it's turning out to be just as good. Recommended.
Till next week, take care.
Paul - 30 degrees! Oh man, you're killing me. We Swedes are stumbling around with endless colds in snowy slush. In total darkness. Almost. But it's getting lighter day by day now, they say...
I haven't listen much to Zappa, but one of his album that totally knocked me down to the ground was “Roxy and Elsewhere”, I used to listen to it when I was drunk; “'s anybody here like Monster Movies?”. The best song on that album is, I think the title is “Village of the Sun”:
Going back home to the Village of the Sun / going back to Palmdale where the / turkey farmers run...
C
1449 - Ha! Ho! Temperature yesterday around 30 degrees celsius, today hovering around 19 degrees. Also experiencing extremely unseasonal summer rainfall for our part of the country. Table Mountain covered in cloud as I look out of my office window.
1451 - Luckless Pedestrian - jew talkin' to me? Huh?
1461 -jjeff - Bowie of Ferry? Robert Palmer.
Any opinions about Frank Zappa?
I think Prince is an incredible mulit-instrumentalist and a helluva' songwriter...puts out TOO much music, but every album has its gems.
Dear "Fly on wall",
I must admit, I sort of dig some of No Doubt's stuff,
but thier latest song "Hey baby, hey baby, hey baby, hey"
is nauseating. I'd be shocked if Rick Ocasek had anything
to do with it... Prince might have something to do with it
though. When do you suppose Prince will finally breakdown
and have that sex change operation that he's been promising
himself?
*hing*
Conjuring up the name of Prince on a Steely Dan site is
sort of like blashpemy isn't it? The guy kinda reminds
me of another singing/dancing fool who desparately
wants to look like a woman. His first name is Michael.
The womans name is Diana Ross. Both of these two guys
(if you can call them that) are pretty pathetic really.
But hey, the key to the music biz since the 80's has
been "Why promote talented artists when simple flash
will suffice?" I see they must have had you in mind
when they constructed that theory.
A jumbo jet is just coming into the Toronto Airport on it's final approach. The pilot comes on the intercom, "This is your Captain. We're on our final descent into Toronto. I want to thank you for flying with us today and I hope you enjoy your stay in Toronto." He forgets to switch off the intercom. Now the whole plane can hear his conversation from the cockpit. The co-pilot says to the pilot. "Well skipper, watcha gonna do in Toronto?" Now all ears are listening to this conversation. "Well" says the skipper, "first I'm gonna check into the hotel and take a crap. Then I'm gonna take that new stewardess out for supper, you know, the one with the big tits. I'm gonna wine and dine her, take her back to my room and put it to her all night." Everyone on the plane is trying to get a look at the new stewardess. She's so embarrassed that she runs from the back of the plane to try and get to the cockpit to turn the intercom off. Halfway down the aisle, she trips over an old lady's handbag and down she goes. The old
lady leans over and says: "No need to run dear, He's gotta take a shit first."
Hey!
So you New Yorkers couldn't bother to mention that BOTH Larry Carlton and Mose Allison are appearing there this week?
Influential bands( just let me get a few lines in before the topic is dead): As a purely unbiased list, I'd say it's not too bad, but there are placements that I think are put there just to get a rise out of people like Ramones placing so high, and Korn making the list at all. And yeah, Pink should have placed higher. What about Big Audio Dynomite, the king of the samplers. Mind you, my time line's not that great; was anyone else taking pre-existing audio segements and incorporating it into new songs( are there any coffins ready?)? Does anyone else admire it's inventiveness? It was the bastard that fell out between the legs of the Clash, and was kicked into the corner of obscurity. Growing up, wiping it's ass on newspaper headlines, left to wander through late night rave halls until...well, maybe it wasn't that influential, but certainly unique.
1267-Angel: Nice website. The Show Biz Kids blurb reminded me of when I had 2 of my nephews(one was 8 and the other 16) in the car and it was playing. The younger one said," Did they just say what I think they said?", and we said,"Yup". He probably went home and told his parents.
1270-Lp:Yes, I love Bowie. He's always interesting. Do you have any shares?
I've heard they're for sale, but I wouldn't know where to look for the listing. And who started the dapper crooner look first, Ferry or Bowie?
1271-Hermit:That's where you ended up that night. Hotel6! After the Napalm under the kneecaps I blacked out. My last recollection of you was sideways. As I lay on the wet curb you were were chatting up two hookers and a streetlamp. Ah, memories.
1285-Miz Ducky: Thanks for the letter. Very nice.
1290-eLLe: Sorry, sweetie, but you seem to look for it. Just let it go. Borders do not make a people, laws and environment do. I'm just glad I live where there's some grip on gun control. Just let it go. We love you.
1303-Steviedan: What can I say, name-giver? You're candy to read. Write a
book
1394-W1P: Goodbye Blue Sky-Ruby Tuesday. I never equated the two. Interesting. Is there a basis for this or were you"just drunk"? Luther Wright and the Wrongs were a bad smell that passed through about a month ago. It didn't take much of a breeze to blow them away.
1413-Ben: Boston Ben?
Thanks for your help Howard!

An addition to the continuing saga of cloning (or how to give an alien a cosmic sized migraine and convince them we have far surpassed them in intellect which will send them warping across the universe in search of a planet with immature life forms where they can hopefully solve this puzzle).
"Scientists tout cloning to boost hen egg-laying:
U.S. poultry growers have a chicken and egg dilemma. For decades, people who raise chickens have been honing their "selective breeding" skills and have gotten pretty good at growing the fattest bird possible. But meatier and faster-growing birds lay fewer eggs. Prolific egg-layers tend to be skinny. (An answer to human over-population? The diet gurus would be the next lobyists. Yet, from casual observation, this theory does not hold to homo-sapiens)
AviGenetics is among biotech companies considering this dilemma as they pursue the perfectly engineered bird. Their idea is to create identical copies of eggs with desirable traits that can roll off assembly lines by the billions. The hatched chickens would be identically disease-resistant and grow at the same exact rate. (think of the cross-over possibilities for football teams!)
This goal has yet to be fully embraced. Animal rights activists argue that the science simply provides a more efficient way to harm chickens. "We strenously object to the mass production of chickens in the first place" said a spokesperson from PETA. (are you then all for mass starvation?)
Scientists studying all forms of embryonic stem cells, including the human version, believe they can someday manipulate these primordial cells into any adult tissue of their choosing. (QUICK! where do we go to sign D&W up as genetic donors?)
Bill, you are a whanker! No Doubt's Rock Steady (featuring Hey Baby) is da shiznit! Rick Ocasek produces 2 tracks, Prince does one as well. You are just not hip, that's the problem.
You get's no LOVE,

Ms. No: I forget the key of the that bridge section in I Got The News - think it might be Am - but you may have to transpose the chords below if I got the wrong key.
BTW this is from memory - don't have guitar or keyboard to hand to check, but I'm pretty sure its right. Clas, Stevee, z and the gang will correct me if I've slipped up I'm sure...
The riff that repeats a few times at the start of the section is: Am G/A Am G/A. I would voice these CEA BDG ACE BDG with A bass underneath.
After a few of these (and after "duchess") you get F#7-5 (F# A#CE) instead of the A-ACE, then the same triads (CEA BDG ACE BDG) repeat but now over an F bass.
Repeat from the start and that's about it.
Howard
Hiya Dan Fans,
Does anyone happen to know the chord progression over the 8 bar Michael MacDonald break in I Got The News? I'm trying to break out some vocal parts and for the life of me I just cannot hear what's going on. The lead line is easy, but separating the other parts is like trying to unmake a cake.
Thanks for your help

can you stand more satire on the president? check the url above.
David ~ I'm in the same position as Angel...kinda' planned my weekend around seeing you on Saturday evening. Friday evening traffic is murder, I have rehearsal during the day on Saturday, and I promised my nephews I'd take them snowboarding on Sunday. Guess we'll just catch up next time you're in town...
Stevie ~ Watched the Burns/Twain series too...fascinating stuff!
kevin - cool site, actually - hey if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at - i think even B/F would get a rise out of that site
paul - tangled up in blue is NOT a masterpiece to you? say it ain't so!
is it a good time to buy bachman stock, whaddya think mu?
(1436) Mu: Yeah, I had the same thought. Freaky, if you ask me. I promise not to ask you about DTMA.
(1441) Kevin: Annoying, I don't think so. I think you tend to lead in that department.
(1439) Steviedan: So Burns mananged to handle Mark Twain well? I still cry that I mananged to miss the Charlie Parker segment of Jazz. I never found it amidst the 19 plus hours of that show. Someday....
(1434) Floridavid: Now you say not available on Saturday? ....sigh.
I will call you.
(1442) Blaise: Damn, I forgot that question about the demise of the Rainey website. Ben, say it's not too late to ask him what happened to it?
(1431) Jim #: Yeah, that combination of snacks is traditional fare. They had better have a doctor on hand on Superbowl Sunday. :-)
There you are Paul! You have summer now, right? How many degrees Celsius?

lp - I've always had an aversion to Mr Zimmerman, for some pigheaded personal reason. Never could stand that dog and his tuneless singing. For me , as Prince is like the thinking man's Michael Jackson, Neil Young is like the thinking man's Bob Dylan.
Whaddyasay?
dr Mu - I am used to tachycardia, I envy that son of a bitch!
And hey, do I understand you right here, do you think the “Benny and the Jets”-piano-sound is irritating? I love the sound, fat maj-9ths and minors.

Biz Tawk - yeah, I remember Becker once said: Going out looking for managers is like going out looking for rattlesnakes.

And the most annoying song for the month of
January 2002 is..........................
The "Hey Baby, Hey Baby, Hey Baby, Hey" Song
by Gwen Stefani and Bounty Killer.
Our judges have voted this one of the most
annoying, nauseating, songs that they've ever
heard to date. Just go ahead and TRY to get
it out of your head...go ahead, TRY!
It's like that "Goodmorning Starshine" song
from the seventies! Our experts tried EVERYTHING
to rid thier minds of the inane, repetitious
banter of this young lady and her friends but
to no avail. Even hard math problems and
really, really difficult zen logic questions
were useless to erase it's effects!
Therefore this months most annoying song is
wholeheartedly awarded to Gwen Stefani and
crew. Way to go guys, you have been automatically
placed into the running for the most annoying
song of the year award.
Rock On!
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9 — When the music industry last heard from Irving Azoff, who made his name as the brash manager of acts like the Eagles and Steely Dan in the 1980's, he was selling his stake a year ago in the Giant record label to the Warner Music Group, one of the handful of companies that have come to dominate the business.
[...]
Another challenge for Mr. Azoff is his reputation. In the 1990 best seller, Hit Men," which chronicled the early days of the music business, the author Fredric Dannen described the 5-foot-3-inch Mr. Azoff as "one of the most loathed men in the music business" whose "friends called him the Poison Dwarf."
In the book, Mr. Dannen recounted an incident in which Mr. Azoff was said to have torn a television set off the wall of a hotel room and threatened to hurl it out a window. Mr. Azoff remembers the episode somewhat differently. "We probably threw it out the window," he said in the interview Tuesday, "but we didn't tear it off the wall."
Mr. Azoff said he gave the singer Joe Walsh a chain saw as a Christmas present one year — not for sawing logs, but hotel furniture. He said he played a game, too, with an artist that involved watching Johnny Carson on the "Tonight" show. They would ask each other if Mr. Carson looked thirsty; if they agreed he did, either Mr. Azoff or the artist would pour water down the back of the television set until it exploded."

Hallo Blaise!
Thanks for checking it out. I am working on a site for those who want to succeed in showbiz. The site you were looking at are now constantly growing with tips and shit for the Swinging Youngsters:
www.ateljelundkvist.se/z/vintage
I am quite busy now with this Dreamweaver, can't post here that often no more. I guess StAl knew what he did when he inroduced me to mr HTML. Ha!
C, HTML to the people!
In Conclusion: a majority of those stupid enough to take part in meaningless internet voting tallies think SD is annoying. Internet surveys are annoying "par excellence", if you ask me.
Yeah, that's right... take turns in saying that Canadians are sooooooo crazy. Now if I should venture the (true) proposition stating that all California males are naturally blonde like, inside, you'd consider it flaming. Hmmm
Clas, what is that? Looks like the gear left behind by some cheap Kiss tribute act once having toured Sweden, like, two hundred years ago. My best bet. Proof that the ancient Vikings slapped on Peg way before Chuck Rainey?
Speaking of which, I hope it's not too late, given this restricted window of opportunity but...
I got a question for Chuck Rainey: how come his web site vanished just as he promised to talk about his experience with Steely Dan?
Darn. We was just waiting for some dirt...

to hell with ken starr, i want to know what mark twain would have to say about enron or the dubya pretzel debaucles. yes, i have diverting myself with the ken burns film. any other unsuspecting viewers ? i hope so, in that the viewing was an entirely rewarding and cathartic experience. i have always been a lover of "yankee in king arthur's court" and particularly the controversial later writings "letters from the earth", but was unprepared for the depth and profundity of the biography. everyday i seek to be moved and for the last two nights i have succeeded. mark twain is definitively ancestral dan. an original american acerbic wit...

The Jesuits would be proud Ken...By 1/22/01 those Enron checks had already cleared cleared for 50% of Capitol Hill and White House "public servants," Bob Bennett, Robert Rubin, Ann Richards, Arthur Andersen, McCain, Feingold, Ian Anderson, Ian MacKellan, Frodo, Buddy the Dog...at least they were wise to take legal tender (I feel a Jackson Browne song coming), not stocks...
From a January 22, 2001 ABC News story:
"I expect every member of this administration to stay well within the boundaries that define legal and ethical conduct," Bush told the roomful of staffers. "This means avoiding even the appearance of improper conduct."
Angel: Kinda spooky that the Chewing Challenged incident occurred just after our discussion of Pretzel Logic. Whatever you do, don't put on "Don't Take Me Alive."

Big Hello to everyone.
Chips, those crazy Canadians are always coming up with something. Remember Chiliwack?
Hiya, Angel! Thanks for the heads-up on the latest bit of creativity from the Webdrone.
Y'know, when I first heard of this whole Dastardly Pretzel Incident, my mind could not help but leap to memories of another unfortunate incident several years back, in which Dubya's daddy barfed all over a Japanese dignitary at a formal state dinner. Or something to that effect--remember? Hmmmm ... wonder if peculiar GI-tract episodes run in the family?

Am I too late to get in on the pretzilizing?
Today the local radio lads did their morning bit based on Pretzil Logic, replete with "Any Major Dude" and others. Funny, I always thought that a certain libation went well with pretzils and football and might ultimately have been the cause of all this spin...
Naw, couldn't be.

Hey Ducky, we got our website change! Very creative Webdrone (don't forget to scroll to the line under the pretzel logic picture). :-)

St.Al - Weren't the Enron employees coerced or limited in what they could do with their 401(k)s? - got some data at home somewhere...It reeks from my perspective...
C: I was impressed. I heard W was handing out bags of pretzels to the press yesterday that read: "Chew Thoroughly."
Mike (the guy with the 42 HR and 48 after climbing up and down a set of stairs) finished 10th in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. His stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped per beat would be 60% greater than the average person of his size and age). Here's something scary: the average 25 year old can use oxygen during an endurance race at a max of 40 (mls of oxygen per kg body mass per minute). Mike could go up to 82, a rat about 90, and a throughbread horse about 150. The good news is that rats are very inefficient runners...
I think the "toy" sound from the Ben's recordings you've mentioned has to with the engineers have removed or put the mics in the postion where they don't record much "echo." I dunno...It could be a running joke or the Baldwin piano or a style that resembles almost the 19th Century Western uprights (check out The Last Waltz). There are exceptions like Video from the eponymous debut of BF5. Video starts off like Bily Joel and ends with a Brubeck outtro... TLW starts off like Dudley DoRight and ends up with an Omartian/TBTLO run...typical Ben...
In contrast, early Elton recordings were engineered with more care for that echo. They got carried away to an irritating melodramtic effect occasionally - like Bennie and the Jets. Elton liked to go for those power chords, leaving enough temporal space between them, so the listener could hear the echo. My favorite Elton though stuff though plays off of Paul Buckmaster's strings on Madman Across the Water. Buckmaster did some interesting stuff - he could even make a drugged-out hippie like Simon Phillips (I thing that's the guy) sound decent...

SEEING DOUBLE
Human cloning: will it be a lifesaving scientific advance, like penicillin? Or will it prove to be a horrible mistake that unleashes untold devastation upon humanity, like the accordion?
As American citizens, we need to form strong opinions about this issue, so that we can write letters to our congresspersons, so that their staffs can, as a precautionary measure, burn them. But first we must inform ourselves by asking quiestions and then answering them in the "Q" and "A" format.
Q. What is cloning?
A. In scientific terms, it is a procedure by which a theoretically infinite number of genetically identical organisms emerge, one at a time, from a Volkswagen Beetle.
Q. No, that's "clowning".
A. Whoops! Our bad.
Q. Have there been any successful cloning experiments?
A. Yes. In 1995, scientists in Florida used a single strand of DNA from the Backstreet Boys to form 'N Sync. Or maybe it was the other way around.
Q. Is anybody trying to clone humans?
A. Yes. A group called the "Raelians", which was founded in France, and which we are not making up, claims to be working on a human-cloning project. According to their Internet site (www.rael.org), the Raelians are named for a French jounalist named Rael who, in 1973, "was contacted by a visitor from another planet". This visitor informed Rael that human life was brought to Earth by aliens, who will come back and visit us if we build them an embassy. The Raelians estimate that this will cost $20 million, and would appreciate donations for this vital mission.
Q. Where does the U.S. government stand on this issue?
A. There is growing bipartisan support for a nuclear strike against France.
Q. How do you, personally, feel about human cloning?
A. Why do you think we refer to ourselves in the plural?

StAl ~ Anderson's goin' down...if anyone's going to be the fall-guy for this, it's them. As an accountant, I'd be fascinated to see what was shredded...and I'd probably put money on the fact it wasn't only numbers ~ but names as well. Perhaps one with the initials "GWB"...
Here's an interesting article on the whole Enron mess.
http://www.msnbc.com/news/686994.asp?pne=msn
Some people are taking the rather callous position that many of the employees get what they deserve by sinking so much into company stock. Though I tend to agree, I also see how easy it is to become enchanted with a (supposedly) good performing company. I personally know 3 people who became millionaires on Microsoft's good fortunes. There was a statistic that floated around the Seattle area before the release of Windows 95 that stated 1 in 7 Microsoft employees were millionaires. Not sure how accurate it was but it wouldn't have surprised me.
And what about Arthur Andersen? Someone needs to revoke their license to practice accounting...

...these days. And I even saw the Fireworks! Did I believe that I was dreaming or what!? Thanks to StAl for introducing me to the HTML.

dr Mu - Bradycardia? Well, just wanne show off my omnipotentia.
And 48? Holy cow man, his heart must have been as large as a horse... uhum, a horse's heart.

Paul - C Cross is an excellent choice.

W1P: Can it get any more depressing? Check out the URL above in the homepage. I'm so sorry.
Angel: John Denver:)lol
hey angel - i think i missed it out here on GBH, can i get a tape from you?
paul - good list, though i would replace CSNY with Bob Dylan (though he's solo and i did say band, didn't i?), for who is zoomin who? answer therest of the questions when you can -
i suppose the question for me is not who are the best bands per se, but which bands had the largest influence on bands to come? no?
I was hanging out in the archives yesterday during lunch. Brought back some funny memories. Especially the first entry on December with the "I am totally pished" line. Made me laugh. I was actually doing a search for something I remembered, from back at the end of 2000.
(1141) Wormy: Good to see you for a few seconds. Glad life is going well for you.
(1048) Ducky: I expected the website to change about 2 weeks ago. Still waiting.... I keep hoping that the delay means it might be a front page with some information on it. Yeah, right dream on....
(1414) Paul: Barry Manilow? :-)
(1396) Blaise: Could you up the font, please. My computer screen isn't that big and I can't read it easily. :-) Funny Pretzel Logic Stuff.
LP: I think Nathalie Merchant will be on Austin City Limits soon. Check it out.
But seriously:
1. The Beatles
2. Steely Dan
3. CSNY
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
5. Led Zeppelin
6. Bob Marley and The Wailers
7. The Doors
8. R.E.M.
9. U2
10. The Sex Pistols
Almost made it onto my list:
Talking Heads
Genesis
Queen
The Clash
The Band
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Black Sabbath
Jethro Tull
Fleetwood Mac
Weather Report
Pink Floyd
Grandpa! Grandpa! The deadline for the 2002 Technicolor Motorhome is in 30 days and you haven't even thought about a song to submit!
Interrupting the Super Bowl,

Kay, here's the definitive, final answer to question one. I know, I know, they're not all bands, but still:
1. Barry Manilow
2. John Denver
3. Chris de Burgh
4. Trini Lopez
5. The Springbok Nude Girls
6. Christopher Cross
7. Liberace
8. Cliff Richard
9. Smokie
10. America
I regards to Chuck Rainey doing a clinic at my school, thanks for all the questions, I will pass them on however, please only serious inquiries. I don't want to bore the poor man to death by asking him what kind of sandwich he had for lunch when he was recording peg. If anybody has any other questions to pass along I'd be happy to do so if you would so kindly email them to me as I don't frequent this site too often. bps0008@unt.edu
Thanks

wormy - are you serious? are you really seeing english beat this weekend? are they really together? dave wakeling and everything?
wow - i must say they were one of my absolute favorite bands in college - can you really be bummin ever listening to them, i mean really, what a party
Forward where the knocks are hardest
Some to failure some to fame.
Never mind the cheers or hooting
Keep your head and play the game
Try to keep your feet on the ground
Without getting them stuck in the mud.
You will soon be over the moon or twice as hot as the sun!
and what ska band has better graphics either - wow - great stuff
i am so envious, you lucky guy!
rare worm appearance - work and play have my name these days
bought and watched the Elton Goodbye Yellowbrick Road Classics DVD
it finished and I thought "that was all?"
quite disappointed
then I found the extra interviews section and was treated to some neat stuff - including some interesting guitar work by Davey Johnstone
Bernie is a treat as are the musicians
and get a load of those brit 73 fashions, ugh
granted Yellow Brick was a double lp
and hard to squeeze it all in, but it was
obviously an edit job for a 60 minute show
so the million dollar question
IS there more interviews from the Aja disc??????
oh, that Ben Fold's Sessions at West 54 DVD is nice
at least the first 4 tracks
I join Mu in enjoying the Ben Fold's One suburbian disc
going to see English Beat this weekend
sooner for later
wormy
Miz D: my deck also has unplugged chili-pepper lights. What's worse is that my company's web site still has a page with a December 1999 message with a Christmas tree; it's been there so long that I've stopped harrasing the person who is responsible for that part of the site. There's definitely something to be said for .GIF trees compared to a real one. Until we started buying live trees and planting them before New Year's Day, our real trees tended to stay inside until Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, or even Easter.
The Austrialian Pink Floyd played a Gilmour birthday party some 7 or 8 years ago and Gilmour got on stage and played with them. We had a show on Saturday and some guy came up to us and told us he was a producer who was making a film with Gilmour and Michael Kamen about flying and that he would love us to play the "wrap party" Well, as you might imagine, we hear all kinds of claims by people so we're not holding our breath. BUT if its true, that would be pretty cool because presumably Dave would join us for a cut or two.
By the way, did I tell everyone that Brian May was at the Aerosmith show last night and that our rhythm guitar player (who is the lead guitarist for LA's Queen tribute Sheer Heart Attack) got to meet Mr. May for the first time?
As some of you may remember, I came this * close to having our Brian May fly to NYC for Danfest in March and have him play Do It Again with the Steely Damned -- but I was just too cheap to put my cash on the line!
OK, I'm not drunk any more! W1P
Hmmm ... wonder when Don&Walt are going to tell their Fearless Webdrone to take the Christmas card down from the ODP's front door.
Then again, I still have my holiday chili-pepper lights strung on my little balcony railing. Not plugged in, but still out there.
/the Mam'zelle
who has more than just chili-pepper lights "out there"
Don & Walt have to change their warfare-strategy. A change from swedish ginger-cockies to pretzels looks to be more efficient. Besides I think you americans put some of your 200% tariffs on imported ginger-cockies.
Dano: Very cool about Gilmour. I'd like to think we would all do the same if in that position...
Talking of Floyd , WIP DAN ,Did you see that Dave Gilmour bought a house in London for $500 Thousand bucks and sold it last week for $7 Million and gave all the money to the homeless in London??Jeez Dan couldnt you tap him up for a sub as you blast out his songs.Get on the blower Dan and ask for a few bob??
As you know people i like the old nags and have been following a horse called Steely Dan at the tracks and on Saturday it romped in at 16/1 the show , and i won about Ł200 nicker ( about 350 clams ) so the beers are on me this weekend. All the Brits keep an eye out for his next run on the all weather dirt in the next week or so. Cyn you wanna send me some wedge to put on or what ?? I am trying to contact the owner to see if there is a tie up with the Dan and will fill you in accordingly??
Steely Dan Go on me son yahoooooooooooooooooo.
Duncan , When are you over this way mate ?? Sometime in January?? Clue me in.
Where is Cara Mia ( hubba hubba ) , and the juju princess they lost or what??
Where is The Average White Band in the top 10?? Anyone voting for Scots bands??
Leggin it for a Brad Pitt..........Danooooooooooooooooooo
Where is The Smiths
mu: i'm doing a wait and see on the whole thing, my skepticism is flourishing at the moment - please recall my slight libertarian undertones...
hey, i just checked my yahoo email account and someone asked yahoo about the origins of the santa ana winds (could it be a steely dan yahoo fan?) - i remember we got heavy into this not too long ago (?) on these pages, so the url to it is the home page in this post, enjoy...
LP: Who are we going to arrest outside of Enron and Anderson, everybody (hey wait, not a bad idea)? Enron gave to 40% of House and 70% of the Senate. Their friends include Anne Richards and Bob Bennett. and Robert Rubin.
Enron simply ran their company like a California dot.com. Capital, salaries and 401Ks was tied up stocks and a baffling array of international acquisitions initiatives. When the stock market is good, it's a money machine... Once the stock market went soft, Enron's money became a financial black hole. They did manage their co. like JR Ewing - where most Texas companies including the oil and energy cos. are run more like Jock Ewing with a Harvard MBA - very conservative. It shows that even with real assets, the "new economy" model just doesn't work...
On Oct 28 when the phone calls were made, Enron's mess was already public knowledge (source: Houston Chronicle) - so much so that their stock prices (and theirefore their capital) were plummeting after the 10/16 release of their big loss in the 3rd quarter. Now, we'd all be rightfully angry if the White House had sent Enron a pile of cash to bail them out, right? That would suggest tit for tat - but they did not save Enron's hide. Enron made their bed - they had to lie in it. Should we bail out every corporation that demonstrates financial irresponsibility or incompetence? Certainly, you as a liberal would not want that, and neither do I...
I think it's obvious the real criminals are the CFOs, Anderson, the CEOs, and the Board including Phil Gramm's wife. Blocking the 401Ks from withdrawls, while many withdrew 25% of stock at the last minute is despicable. Many or the workers were given 15 min to clear out...I hope the workers get their due, and the execs the slammer...
I hope the hearings will accomplish 2 broad goals: 1) get the workers their money, while stripping the Enron execs, and 2) accomplish real campaign finance reform. Soft money from corporations, PACs, unions has to go. We simply can't have gov officials recusing themselves (or worse, ignoring the conflict of interest) every time a big corporation get in trouble Full disclosure of hard money from individuals while raising the ceiling modestly. I'm not against more fed. contributions to campaigns. TV and radio required to allot a number of hours of free time to each candidate....
C: What is this - MDWeb? The vasovagal response caused the bradycardia. The large bolus of unchewed pretzel going down stimulated the vagal nerve. The vagus nerve slows heart rate. W's vagal tone is already high (he has technical brady cardia without clinical symptoms at rest), since he runs avidly...meaning his resting heart rate may be 50 or lower.
I knew a triathlete once who had a resting heart rate of 42. A naive TA once made the mistake of using him in a demonstration of vagal withdrawl (at the beginning of exercise heart rate is increased primarily through the reduction in parasympathetic tone by the vagus nerve). After running up and down a flight of stairs, his heart rate SOARED to 48! I was ROFLMAO!!
Enron CFOs and CEOs along with Anderson CPAs have been on a high "roughage" diet, so these criminals are immune...the 401K holders are slowly moving towards the front of the line, as they should, when Enron sells its assets...
to the armchair political watchers - the sad thing here is, the American people got so burnt out with the press obsession with the dysfunctional private life of Clinton, and further, most people can't tell the difference between poor real estate investment decision-making and abuse of the public trust and power that many will barely flinch at this Enron situation which appears (early opinion, please forgive) to be the latter abuse though people are already comparing it to Whitewater (no comparison, imho), nor the "couch/pretzel" incident (except for the internet jokes currently being doctored, but not yet forwarded to me, but i'm patiently waiting - my prediction, he was trashed)
it's comparable to the nervous tick we got from the Iran-Contra situation, we had not yet recovered from Watergate, so joe six-pack barely gave it a glance
enron should be setting off the richter scale across the country, but it may never leave the beltway nor npr
on my cd player at work: Natalie Merchant burnt cd i got from someone on her site - currently hearing her version of "every day is like sunday", an excellent rendition, also her "to sir with love" with michael stipe is perfect
sorry i had to leave chat so suddenly last night, marital duties called me away
Its driving me crazy...Was it a soft or hard pretzel? And is the any logic in it or on it? And where the hell was the football widow/ First Lady Laura? I think its a conspiracy to draw attention away from the soon to be Eron scandal.
Face..JuJu Priestess, Yes!...Chinese Medicine, Accupunturist, English Teacher (and all around weirdo) NO! And for last time..Shes NOT a Doctor! She doesn't even play one on T.V.
BillyBob..Face and I did the hostage thing once...next thing we know its all over the papers. And it was just one little ol' Yard Flamingo. So, now we get blamed for every little hostage taking. Do it at your own risk!

Off to corrupt and warp the youth of America...
My mother always said, 'When you're eating pretzels, chew before you swallow,' Bush said. "Always listen to your mother."
Is this the real meaning of Pretzel Logic? It makes sence to me.
Ha! The news story about the al Qaeda pretzel is just the best! Did Dubya forget how to chew or what?
While I'm here... what is it with all this
Havn't people got better things to do? A little bold or italics - in moderation - can be a great thing, but recently it's been a pain in the ass getting a bit out of hand, no?
Let's just go easy on those HTML tags OK? (less is more and all that...)

Tubb said Bush suffered an abrasion on his left cheek the size of a half dollar and a bruise on his lower lip, apparently from falling onto the floor from a couch.
11 Whacky Wire Stories on why Dubya tumbled off the couch:
»» Domestic terrorists left entertainment center's virtual reality setting on "Armchair Quarterback" in White House. Ray Lewis did the rest.
»» Jenna walked in.
»» Post-Taliban-style bearded sportscasters looked a little too much like that tall bearded fella, you know... Al Gore.
»» One word: Enron.
»» Nationwide dragnet for faulty pretzels failed. Lax Pretzel logistics.
»» Kept hearing how the Jets crashed in Oakland. Misunderstood.
»» Spotted drunken Brother Jeb in Miami crowd with a target painted on his bare chest.
»» The new Ravens "Usama 4-3" trick blitz audible didn't sit well with stomach.
»» Famous last words: Mental note: "Halftime show should really feature executions of al Qaeda members at mid-field. Why not? Think about it..."

Hey, hey, hey. Patience lp. I will take my test. In good time. Luckless Pedestrian, thanks for posting it. I didn't disappear. I command this console from the discomfort of my office - no access to computer at home - hence the temporary AWOL. Oleander and Steviedan - thanks for your welcomes.
Back shortly with test answers.
Toodlepip.
I just came home from reluctantly going to see Aerosmith and Cheap Trick --why? Only the best show I've seen in the past 10 months --including Saturday night's sold out Which One's Pink? show. Animals is the best Floyd Lp -- most rock n roll. U, you don't like Floyd's Stone's cover on The Wall (Goodbye Blue Sky, who could hang a name on you?). Saucerful of Secrets is pretty cool. I'm drunk -- goodnight
from his own modern jazz quartet, or those of dave holland and others, to the cutting-edge pop of steely dan... inhabits a broad musical spectrum that echoes the diversity of these times.
and it's all in his rico select jazz reed. if they ever stop making them times could get hairy for potter.
and now for another potential steely sax worker that could never be but would have been perfect: paul desmond. as i'm listening to him, i open up this page to see discussion of brubeck...
st al, you said punk, metal, & funk but forgot an essential chili pepper influence that set them apart. RAP ! "l.a. lakers, fast-lane takers...". defining omission there. oh, and another genre, a one-man genre, jimi hendrix loomin' enormously over the red hots...
flea is the man !
gina, i'll have to look through my lester bowie catalog for green's tunes.
stevee, i have the "leprechaun" on cd in front of me. first reissued on verve/polydor in 1993. "nite sprite" is probably steve gadd's second most defining moment.
ben, could you grill chuck as to whether he has ever been in walter's backyard ?
Man, I thought it was a joke. W choked or swallowed wrong on a Pretzel at the White House watching football, fell out of his E-Z chair - it was not his own! and fainted - musta been the Dolphins offense or the last Citibank bill from Robert Rubin... Sounds like a vasovagal response (where heart rate becomes very low and blood pressure drops)...that'll put Cheney into V-fib...
St. Al: caught about 20 min on the reply late nite...I guess this means a Floyd list. I'm not a huge fan but here goes:
1. Wish You Were Here - This should be easy. Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the title track are 2 of "classic" rock's superb recordings - Gilmore's given Breathe-ing room. Have a Cigar is a hoot. Nick and David were right on VH1 - their finest hour...
2. Animals - expansion of the Orwell book or the Harrison tune? Very good songs.
3. Dark Side of the Moon - Especially nice in sync with the Wizard of Oz. The first IMAX soundtrack?
4. Meddle - not bad at all
5. All the Barrett stuff - sounds like 1968 Who (Sell Out) on LSD. Weird...
6. Momentary Lapse of Reason/Division Bell - Gilmore's Floyd isn't bad, but poor spatial soundscape occasionally mars these works...
7. The Wall - Confortably Numb is nice sounding track. Hey You isn't bad, but haven't we heard this before? Rest - not my cup of tea. Walter's authority paranoia is pretty boring stuff...put on the Police or Elvis C or Talking Heads from that space and time instead...
8. The Final Cut - aptly named
lots of fans here...better zip on the asbestos suit sealed up tight...
No,no,no, wait...wait I got a better idea!
Here's what we'll do, we'll round up all the shopping
carts in the New York Metropolitan area. Then we'll call
all the local supermarkets and say something like,
"Hello Mr.Supermarket manager? Listen and listen good.
If you ever want to see your shopping carts alive again
you'll do EXACTLY as we say..."
Then we meet all the supermarket managers at some
previously agreed upon spot and make the exchange.
It's perfect! Shopping Cart Extortion! It's never
been done before. No one would ever suspect it.
We would be writing a whole new chapter in the history
of organized crime and at the same time have enough
cash to follow Don and Walt around the world on the
next tour! Is this perfect or what?
Please post your personal ideas so that we can flesh
this plan out and put it work.
Thanks.
Excuse me but would anyone happen to know how many
nickle-deposit soda pop bottles it would take to afford
an all-expense paid trip to see Steely Dan at The Gorge
on the next tour? I'm lining up a few shopping carts
and I'm ready to start working on this shortly.
Thank You.
Luckless Ped ? thank you for my test results. I aim to please, so I am pleased.
Miz Ducklet of Seattle ? you did great. Yes, indeed, it was "This All Too Mobile Home" and the instrumental jam that evolved into "Your Gold Teeth II". I am sure that you realized that this second one was not the answer to my question because it did eventually become published material (on Katy Lied, of course).
Now, we move to 1996, and once again, you have hit all the bases with "Wetside Story", "Cash Only Island? and I was also omitting "Jack Of Speed" even though it had different lyrics because it also became published material (on Two Against Nature, of course). The third song that I was looking to see if people knew about is ?
"Our Lawn". Mam?zelle, I know that you will know that this is a Becker 11 Tracks Of Whack track, so technically, you got them all. Stellar job, Stella !!!
W1P ? I can?t believe I left Pink Floyd off of my top ten list. That was a definite mistake. I would probably remove The Beach Boys for Pink Floyd. I am also feeling that missing your band last night was also a mistake. Now you know why we call him "Soupa Dave".
Who's in chat tonight? Let's find out ...

Ben: You are in for a real treat. I saw Chuck Rainey last March at the NYC Danfest. He seems to be a real kind man and boy can he play that bass.
Can't think of any questions, right off the bat, but you might want to do some research yourself and check out the VHS/DVD of Making Aja. Great stuff about an album that Chuck Rainey worked on and some good by play about the bass line from Josie and the slappin' he did on one of the songs.
LP: Did I say that I got the decorations all down last week? Well I lied a bit. Got the decorations off the house last week and did the tree and final packing away this weekend. I can't believe how long it takes. Ugh!
Mu has checked in with some additions to Pretzel Logic. I will be putting them up on my site shortly. If you have a favorite cool thing from a song or songs, feel free to e-mail me, with the information. The address is on the e-mail line above(take out the NOBOTS, of course). So is the website, if you want to check it out. Mu brought up some great stuff, I never knew. Like that fact that there are 2 drummers on Parker's Band. :-)
I must have missed... The top ten test -- is this personal favorites or most influential?
Speaking of Pink Floyd. Tonight is the debut of Pink Floyd Legends on VH1. Don't forget to watch.
Hi,
Chuck Rainey is visiting my school (North Texas State). Anyone have any burning questions that they would like to have answered by this particular Steely Dan ace of bass?
Ben Scholz
Steeve -- no Pink Floyd? Also, it was Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, man. Too bad you missed last night -- ask your sax man about it.
Quoth Sir Stevee of Dan: "Name at least 2 un-published Steely Dan songs which were performed by the band in concert. (Hint: I know of at least one in the 70's tours, and at least 3 from '96 alone.) Good luck Show Biz Quiz Kids."
Lessee ... the '70s song I know for sure is "This All Too Mobile Home" (really fun song, that one). There was also an instrumental jam that, considerably evolved and transformed, eventually showed up on record as "Your Gold Teeth II"--the transformations were significant enough that I'd count the original as unpublished for purposes of this quiz. I have this faint trace memory that there were more, but for the life of me I can't remember what they were.
The '96 songs would be "Wetside Story" (another great song, with a great groove), "Cash-Only Island," and ... hmm. You're not by any chance counting that early version of Jack of Speed sung by Walter with different lyrics, are you? I'm not sure I would count that one, for obvious reasons. But otherwise I can't think of a third as-yet unpublished song they did in '96.
The 2000 tidbit on this list, of course, would be the fabled "Steely Dan Show" song (unless you count the appearance of its lyrics on the ODP as "publication," which I guess I don't).

LP - sorry sweetheart, bolditalicsis a no-no.
Okay, the average reader doesn't care, but if you're working with typographic stuff you have to follow rules, don't you? What the hell would this world come to if we didn't?

For some reason, when I write my posts first in Word for Windows and then copy/paste it in here, my quotes (both single and double) come out as question marks. Sorry for the confusion.
Steviedan - Chick Corea's Leprechaun is one of my all-time favorite fusion albums. I haven't come across a CD pressing of it yet. I am tempted to make a CD-R of my album, because I do not play vinyl that much anymore. If you know of a CD pressing for this, please let me know at your convenience of course.
The 2 Steely Fan Band shows this week went very well. Thank you all for your support.

Where are the quiz takers? I?ll give it a shot ?
1. Name the top ten rock and roll bands of all time (Bands, not individuals)
1. The Beatles
2. The Stones
3. Steely Dan
4. Sly and the Family Stone
5. Crosby, Stills, & Nash
6. Traffic
7. Cream
8. The Beach Boys
9. The Who
10. The Grateful Dead
If individuals were this list, I would include Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrex, Janice Joplin, Elton John (early period), Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Bruce Springsteen, and Chuck Berry.)
2. Which Steely Dan release do you play while driving? cooking? dinner/cocktail parties?
Besides the obvious answer ?all of them (including bootlegs, and other unauthorized compilations)?, I would say Two Against Nature while driving since it is new. I do not cook so I cannot answer that one. For dinner and cocktail parties, the ?all of them? answer would most correctly apply.
3. Do you know how to post an image in this place? Can you do italics? Prove it, if yes.
I do not know how to do either of these things (in this place).
4. What is the real influence by the Ramones on music?
The Ramones wrote another chapter in the book of ?Iconoclastic, go against the establishment, put it in your parents? face Music Makers?. The most stand-out (but non-musical) aspect of this band for me is when I was at UC Berkeley, and we produced a Ramones concert on campus, I was struck (and sickened) by how much the bass player sweated. (No, no. This guy did not perspire, he SWEATED. He didn?t smell too good neither.) There was a band roadie dedicated to toweling off the bass guitar after every song. They had 2 bass guitars for the gig, and the songs are fairly short so this poor guy was toweling off the bass guitars practically non-stop for the entire performance. There was a puddle on the stage where this guy stood. I am fairly confident that many of you know who the bassist is. I do NOT need to know. Thank you.
5. If you are anti-Canada, are you racist or ethnocentric?
I am pro-Canada. I have relatives and friends there.
6. Who influenced whom, Beach Boys to/from Beatles?
I believe that The Beatles influenced The Beach Boys (along with the rest of the WORLD). It is well known that McCartney was very impressed with the Pet Sounds album though.
7. Your prediction on the next Steely Dan tour and/or release.
When I make this prediction, I have my fingers, legs, everything crossed ? May 2002 for the release of the next album. Rumor has it that Becker and Fagen already have enough basic tracks recorded for 2 full albums, so I hope that the ?sweetening? process will not take a very long time. As for a tour, how about the latter part of 2002?
8. Favorite Bowie song.
It would be very hard to land on a single song. My favorite quirky song is ?Andy Warhol? from Hunky Dory. ?Aladdin Sane? (title track) has an amazing piano solo in it. ?Hang On To Yourself? from ?Ziggy Stardust? is probably my favorite. But there are so many other honorable mentions such as:
It Ain?t Easy
Moonage Daydream
Panic In Detroit
Watch That Man
Space Oddity
Diamond Dogs
Fame
Young Americans
Fashion (OK, I?ll stop here, no I think I?ll ?turn to the left? ?)
9. The effect of correct grammer in cyber-communication.
If you are trying to impress anyone with correct grammar (or spelling for that matter), it most likely won?t work. If you are trying to make a joke by spelling a word wrong, or getting mixed up over which word to use (i.e., there, their, or your, you?re) you will probably get called on it. This usually happens when there is nothing else wrong with the position you present in your post. I admit that I am more impressed by proper spelling and sentence syntax; I am not an English teacher. I am reading for content, and to better understand other people?s views.
10. Was Britney Spears more influenced by Debbie Gibson or Madonna?
It might as well have been the Jolly Green Giant. After all, he is no less musical than Britney, right? Besides, I heard that the Little Green Sprout showed her his spear long ago.
I have a quiz question for anyone up to trying their hand at it --
Name at least 2 un-published Steely Dan songs which were performed by the band in concert. (Hint: I know of at least one in the 70's tours, and at least 3 from '96 alone.) Good luck Show Biz Quiz Kids.
Steveedan
PS- That reminds me of a story a jazz pianist friend of mine told me about his "European tour". It seems that they couldn't afford to pay for his quintet, so he wound up doing a solo piano tour.
When he got to Germany, it was the same at every club he played in.
He'd sit at the piano trying to play his original compositions, but they'd come up to him and order him to "Spielen der "Take Five"!
Since he was Jewish, he thought it was best that he oblige.
As if my life isn't bad enough already, what with the otterhound pup gone, my practice non-existent, and Arthur Lee in some type of wierd hypnogogic state, now I have to watch the Jets game with the pathologically obnoxious

the main forces in the Fra Fra Big Band, a big band of many sounds, it
blends jazz and rhythms, percussion in a way it spices up even the
most boring thing one can think of.
Suriname is a former dutch colony and the music shows all kinds of
influences, latin, caribbean, african .. the bandmembers are as
colorful as the music. americans, united kingdom, suriname, the

Charles Green is the musical leader and director, one of the arrangers
and writers. his compositions vary from intoxicating gently weeping
willow trees ready to put you in a trance, to complex dialogues
portraying what life brass can bring forth using man's ability to
exhale used oxygen translating it into music. really great stuff. Big

about Mac. that iPod thingie is something different for sure!
about Mac. their sense of humor and sense for shape and efficiency and

about Mac. it's not close to anything elite, because it enables a user
to access anywhere the (creative) mind desires and GIVE access just
the same. user friendly indeed, especially since i am not as deeply
involved in the computer stuff and as ignorant as i was, using a Mac
tuned into what works for me without the need to upgrade or rebuild or
de-crash because of errors in a system beyond my ignorant control.
about Mac. it seems expensive, but any investment in one of their

StAl: My kids don't know jack about those "artists"... yet. That's my primary directive. I'm slipping in as much jazz, classical, Dan, YGK, Ben Folds One - the key so far is just not to suggest or offer the stuff, but just to play them at odd times, sometimes using the headphones in a sneaky way - that way when I turn my back, they "steal" the CD. It's kind of a subliminal grocery store music approach...Of course, when they become teens, all bets are off... Daydreaming daughter is most interested this week in Sting's amazing two-note song: A Thousand Years on the iMac Liquid Music...Besides for that Jaguar commercial song (maybe THAT'S what pissed off Osama ), it's by far the best thing on his new one with its layered production and great drumming...looking for cheap copy in the used CD bins...
ok - we reduced the list to one person - Blind Lemon Jefferson. No that much metal except for the guitar. uhhh I think they used wooden-guitars in the 20ies? Cool pic - but what when on before her rush? hi Mu!

Prince mixed funk & metal with rock in 79 lol StAl
Goddamnit I didn't say they were the first! I said they were one of the first! The first was Blind Lemon Jefferson. It all evolved from there... However, P/Funk and Sly were squarely funk artists. Granted P/Funk's music had an edge, but they didn't mesh Punk and Metal into their music the way the Chili Peppers did. The Chili Peppers took the music of these artists and melded it into a unique sound that influenced many newer bands. Korn, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine, No Doubt, etc, etc. Whether you like any of these newer bands is irrelevent for the purpose of this discussion because your kids do! StAl
Bill: Lief Garrett before Bobby Sherman? No way, dude!
Clas - Ceci n´est pas une image
St.Al - now way they were first! P-Funk (Funkadelic/Parliament) and Sly was way before them. I remember Funkadelic's 'One nation under a groove' was launched with a bonus-single filled with the original mix. They even had a track called 'Who says a funk-band can't play rock?'. Bill - nice list
StAl is that the date they where formed or the date they first released.. I got my first RHCP tape in Bankok 88...lol
Oh yeah... Living Color = 1988
Duncan: From All Music Guide. 1st Albums Red Hot Chili Peppers = 1984 StAl
StAl you said.. What about Fishbone, Living Colour & Faith No More
Q: Though I'm not sure I'd put the Chili Peppers on a top 50 most influential list, they have inspired many newer artists. They were one of the first to merge punk, metal and funk -- long before other band were doing it. Blood Sex Sugar Magic is a brilliant album. One of the best of the 90's and would definitely make an all time greatest list. Plus, you've got to give 'em credit for the first band to go onstage with nothing more than their socks on... To me, the best way to approach a list such as this is with as little personal bias as possible. That's why, even though I think the Ramones suck, I'd put them on it. Personal bias or not. No room for Jackson Browne... Clas: BITE ME.... <-- 4 dots too! StAl
Fla David - I would if I could. So, Pompe has been alone home for over five (5) hours, got to go. C
